Lemonade (2002)
Not Too Tart, Not Too Sweet - Just Right
Very funny satire from many of the same folks who did the more recent "Rum With A Twist" (what's up with all the drinks...?). If you thirst for wry, dark humor then Lemonade with likely quench you desire. Very high production values for a low budget outing - the writing, acting, sets, and directing all exceed the film's modest resources. Guisela Moro is hilarious as Mandy and Ray Carbone plays a corpse with the best of them (uncle George). Erica Tanen is the real standout in an all around excellent cast as rebellious 2-year-old Tammy, forced to make the best of a funeral on a sunny Saturday. Disturbing quirky characters abound - from the stumbling drunk Reverend Davis to the sharp tongued German (?) funeral director Mr. Flanagan to funeral hecklers Ted & Virgil. All make for a exceedingly amusing funeral (if that's possible).
Rum with a Twist (2004)
Very Interesting...
You're never quite sure what you'll get when you watch a low-budget flick; I've often found them to be a surprise - surprisingly good or surprisingly bad. "Rum" falls solidly in the "surprising good" category. Although not perfect (there's always room for improvement, right?), it's well written and directed; has big budget camera work; good acting; and top-notch editing. An excellent job overall. It would have been nice if it was a bit longer, allowing for the characters and story to develop more fully. It's my understanding that this was entered into a contest with a time limit. Too bad.
Bottom line - it left me wanting to see more.
