3022 (2019)
Why?
It is a spaceship, why is everywhere so dark? e can barely see what is going on it is so dark. Nonsense.
Why are they smoking? There is no way that any astronaut would get on board ay vessel and be a smoker. Let alone have a supply of cigarettes'. AND smoke next to other people?? Just why??
They are broken from the beginning, why are they in a mission lasting so long??
The premise of the plot seems just fine, the actors are all capable, why ruin it with such terrible lighting, direction and poor script?
I just find myself asking 'why/' with every aspect of this film.
The Beyond (2017)
Such great promise
The concept and storyline of this were full of promise. I was quickly sucked in to wanting to watch this film..
Then.. nothing.. the story moved along with nothing actually happening.
The film cried out for action, we didn't even see the 'human 2.0' do anything.
This could have been fantastic but was a damp squib.
The documentary style camera work was just 'jumpy', the talking heads sequences just used to replace actual action.
Just plain disappointing. Maybe someone with a budget and a scriptwriter can pick this up and make something out of it. PLEASE!
Backcountry (2014)
Difficult to watch, its hard being scared when you can't see anything
The story line is OK, if predictable. The acting is fine, but very stereotyped. A needy/arrogant boyfriend, and a full on alpha male. My main issue is with the direction/ photography? So many dark scenes and absolutely filled with out of focus shots. Perhaps trying to make it claustrophobic? This only succeeded in making my head hurt. Here we are in the midst of the beauty of nature and what can we see? A leaf..! It isn't that none of these shots wouldn't be OK, but so many? Constant close ups when we need to see (literally) the bigger picture. This may well have been shot in someone's back garden at times. I don't suppose I was expecting much from the film, but I was expecting some beautiful cinematography!
The Time Traveler's Wife (2009)
Bad message for kids
First of all I have this movie in my collection and (re)watch it quite often. It's quite lovely with a hard suspenseful side to it.. But I have a dilemma with part of the story, its early in the film so I don't think its a spoiler. Our hero travels in time, always arriving naked. So, he arrives naked in the countryside and hides in bushes close to where a little girl is having a picnic. He calls to her and urges her NOT to call her mummy. He then has a conversation with her telling her how they are going to be 'good friends'. Now, am I the only one screaming NO,NO,NO!? This is not a healthy message to send to kids. 'That naked man in the bushes is a nice man and you will grow up to marry him'..
But despite this I thoroughly enjoyed this film.
