Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel (2021)
Worth watching, especially for the historic info about the area
This is not your regular crime story, so if that is what you expect you might get disappointed. They are telling the story, but mixing in a lot of history of the area around the hotel, and a lot of what went on on social media when the story unfolded. So the story itself actually makes up a fairly small part of the documentary series.
But I found the story about the woman interesting on its own. But to not give away the story, I will not tell too much about that. Its more interesting to watch not knowing much about here going in.
They also mixed in a lot of youtubers and their thoughts along the way - which was not that interesting. Some of it was so boring so I actually skipped some sections of it here and there.
But what I really found interesting is what they told about the story of Skid Row. Turns out Skid Row has been a thing for about 100 years! And throughout all this time, no politicians in LA has been able to come up with a better solution. Not even the Democrats, that have been in power since the early 90's. So if neither politicians on the left or the right are able to help all these people - who will? 30% of them are severely mentally ill - meaning they do not have the mental capacity to keep themselves safe in a place like that. And in spite of that, no one it taking any action to give them a better alternative than a tent on a sidewalk, in one of the most dangerous areas in the US. And the citizens of LA don't seem to demand anything from their politicians. Which I find completely mind blowing. How did people become this complaisant with other people's suffering?
So all the boring youtubers aside, both Elisa Lam and the Skid Row history made a lasting impression with me.
What Is a Woman? (2022)
I am absolutely flabbergasted....
I had no idea how little health professionals and academia knows about women. To the point where they cant answer the simplest questions.
I live on the other side of the word, so things are less extreme over here. But I do fear that this American trend will spread. If a society cant even except the simplest facts as truth, where will that lead in the end? If every person has their own reality and their own truths, how are we even going to be able to relate to each other?
I highly recommend watching the documentary, although it is both sad and rather scary. Thank goodness someone is speaking up in all of this madness going on.
Ghislaine, Prince Andrew and the Paedophile (2022)
Extremely slow and repetitive
I have seen several other documentaries on this case, and this was by far the worst. They literally show a lot of the exact same segments twice. Is it because they believe most viewers are forgetful? To stretch out the series? I found myself skipping over some of it, because it just got extremely boring.
So I would only recommend this to someone that have not watched any other documentary on the case, or who want to learn about the trial, as all the others were made before the trial started. Otherwise I would not spend my time on this many episodes saying the same things over and over again..
Slumberland (2022)
Fun family movie
Just when you start thinking that there are no fun family movies being made anymore, then this shows up. We watched it as a family tonight, and thoroughly enjoyed it. '
It has some scary moments so I would not let anyone younger than 8-9 watch it - depending on how they handle scary. Our pre-teen loved it. The teenager thought it was a bit boring. My husband and I however loved it.
Excellent actors, fun moments, sad moments, funny moments, and lots of action. Not a boring moment. Will absolutely recommend this as a movie suitable for family movie night. As its not at all too childish for adults, and lots of fun for older children.
Perhaps there will be a Slumberland 2..?
Fat: A Documentary 2 (2021)
I learned something new
Yet another good documentary. I thought I had learned most things there is to know about this subject, but I did learn some new things in this one. For someone starting from scratch it might be better to watch a similar documentary called Fat Fiction for instance, but if you already know a thing or two about diet, then this is an excellent choice, as they dive a bit deeper into why public recommendations are like they are, in spite of science contradicting this. I highly recommend if you are into healthy eating and healthy living. My only complaint is that they could have gone a bit quicker through some of the points. But overall really good.
El caso Cassez-Vallarta: Una novela criminal (2022)
I found it difficult to follow the story
Its a fascinating story to try to tell through a documentary. But they include so many different people, and so many different stories, that I found it difficult to follow the story at times. Perhaps it would have been better to do it over only 3 episodes or something. If you do watch this series - make sure you can do so without too many distractions, otherwise you might get lost somewhere in the middle..
But again, such a fascinating story - which I had never heard about before, as I am neither Mexican or French. But I have to admit it makes me very sceptical of visiting Mexico.. It doesn't paint a pretty picture of the country.
