Yôgisha X no kenshin (2008)
It's more than a usual crime flick.
This movie is one of the best crime thriller I've seen in it some time. As soon as the lead characters are shown, I'd the idea that this is going to be a different ride. The movie doesn't waste anytime getting into the plot which thickens and becomes interesting as the movie goes on. The dynamics between the two master-minds is the highlight of this one.
The plan for the cover-up is brilliant. We feel that the cover-up takes care of all the things, or so it seems. We are shown a couple of clues on to how the cover-up is done but it's subtle. If we focus on the movie, we can spot these and then piece the plot together before it's actually revealed. This makes the movie even more interesting. As the movie reach its final act, we see a significant change of tone to focus more on the emotions. The climax will have a deep impact on you.
It's must watch for all the movie lovers and especially for crime thriller fans.
White Collar (2009)
White Collar is nothing new.
I've seen only the first season of White Collar. There was a lot of potential for White Collar with its premise involving a FBI agent working with a art forger he caught. They tried to put some trust issues between the lead characters but it didn't quite work out.
All the episodes in first season except for a couple ones are monotonous. The plot and characters are predictable. There are some surprise moments but still their plans don't feel original. Most of the heists and escapes shown depends on luck and dumb people. The season finale disappoints the most. The side cast is forgettable and none leave any impression.
The lead characters are charming and it's fun to watch the series due to its relaxed pace and occasional comedy. The series shows the lifestyle of the White Collar criminal and uber rich collectors. The BGM is quite good. The main "Kate" story line promises a lot but doesn't deliver. The season leaves us with a lot a questions, a sly method to keep us hooked. I don't think its worth watching the rest of the series.
True Detective (2014)
True Detective is nothing short of a masterpiece!
I think that the short-series is the best for format for telling a story like True Detective. It gives enough time to go through the story and its characters in its depth but still not long that we lose the focus. The concept of using multiple timelines spanning over 17 years is a stroke of brilliance. The characters evolve both visually and spiritually during these years. The lead casts are perfect I couldn't think of anyone better who could do these roles. Their acting is top-notch. The direction of the series is so good that we get the Gothic psychedelic feel throughout the series. The soundtracks and score including "Far From Any Road" and "Young Men Dead" give the series an unique touch.
The nice little touches like the VFX shots and the single-shot scene is what make this series unforgettable. There is perfection is all these shots. I wish there had been more back-story about Rust and how he became like this. The contrast between the lead character is what made the series this successful. I wish Nic Pizzolatto and HBO bring out more seasons of this.
