The Client (1994)
Enjoyable
First off all, you should always read the book first. I think it is a pretty good adaption. John Grisham fans should not be disappointed by the choice of actors for the parts in the book. Especially Tommy Lee Jones, a personal favorite, plays his part well, and his scenes with Sarandon are the best part of the film. They keep testing each other and have some verbal clashes but in the end you can see Jones' character isn't as bad as he seems and he clearly respects Sarandon's efforts. Only negative comment for this movie is that it never seems to reach the suspense it is aiming for and so it becomes good entertainment for one evening but forgettable soon after.
Three Amigos! (1986)
Loving it still after all these years..
This movie only scored 5.8! Unbelievable! I have seen it numerous times since I was ten and my brother and I are always cracking up. There are a few scenes that should be classics. Movie is about three silent movie actors who take themselves way to seriously. This results in getting them fired. There's the child star, the 'goodlooking/charming' one and the one who considers himself the leader. Once they get a letter from a Mexican girl who asked them to save her village after seeing one of their movies and believing it's real, it's the three amigo's to the rescue!!!
I love the part at the Singing Bush and the part where they are trying to break into the film studio, with Steve Martin making all the bird noises. It's probably not the best collaboration of SNL-actors but still...This is good entertainment!
Once Were Warriors (1994)
Powerful
The Lord of the Rings trilogy for a part was filmed in New Zealand and made us aware of how beautiful this country is. The brilliant movie Once Were Warriors gives us an insight of some of the inhabitants, and it ain't pretty. Maori Jake Heke, a proud man, has some trouble controlling his temper and regularly beats his wife, Beth. Beth desperately tries to keep her family together but is not always successful. She wants her children to escape from the life she is leading and supports them in every way but unfortunately she is not able to keep them from influences on the street, and even in her family... This is one of those movies that slowly reaches to a boiling point, and then there is no way back. Great acting by Temuera Morrisson and Rena Owen, they portray very real characters. This movie never wants to be sensational, but still manages to get us upset...TRULY A MUST SEE!
Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987)
Laughing at other people's misery
You either love or hate Steve Martin and I love him. In this film he plays the person who's got it all, a beautiful wife and children and a lovely home, a good job, you name it. The family man he is, he travels back home for thanksgiving after a presentation in the city. Due to problems at the airport he gets stranded there. Enter John Candy. Feeling guilty he stole the taxi Martin was supposed to get in, he tries everything he can to get Martin home in time once they meet again at the airport. Needless to say nothing goes according to plan. Every time you feel they are finally on their way, obstacles are there to slow them down again. While Candy always remains in good spirit, Martin keeps on getting more and more agitated. Although in the Netherlands we don't celebrate Thanksgiving, it's perfect for Christmas as well. My entire family (ranging from 7 to 76 years old) enjoyed it!
De band (2003)
Clever writing
This series is currently airing in the Netherlands in re-runs at 19.00 hrs every day. Why is this show not a bigger success? If it was American, or even English I think it would have a bigger fan-base. The writing is clever, you care for the members of the band, and even their partners, the acting is good and the story lines are not immature but convincing and believable. I don't think per se that Johnny the Mol is such a hunk but this show, among some earlier work, proves that he is definitely a good actor once given the chance. Also, I seem to be the only one to note that Tijn Dokter, who plays Boudewijn, looks a lot (A LOT) like Victor Reinier (Vledder in Baantjer) Anyway, I am a fan!
The Notebook (2004)
if you like a lovestory...see this one (minor spoiler)
I am not very interested in these kinds of movies normally, but I saw this one on a plane. Even if it is a little predictable, it was definitely worth watching.
If only for the enormous charisma Ryan Gosling brings to the screen. I think he is going to be one of the biggest stars in Hollywood in the future, luckily he is well on his way at the moment.
It's your basic love story: rich girl meets poor boy, parents don't approve, girl meets someone else, but can't forget the first love she ever had. You are going to have to watch it to find out how the story unfolds.
The scenes with Garner and Rowlands had my eyes filled with tears near the end of the movie. If romance is your thing...this is a must-see movie!
