La panthère des neiges (2021)
Open and honest, a true journalist endeavour.
Absolutely stunning camera and audio work.
The photography is unpretentious and brutally honest.
This is difficult to achieve while maintaining continuity,
the editing is superb.
But the real star here is the audio...the sounds of the Yak bulls in the valley are haunting and sound like nothing I've ever experienced.
Do yourself a favour, watch this wonderful journey onto the roof of the world without expectations.
When you finally see the queen take breath and enjoy her 'allowing' you to spend a moment in her world, truly special.
Warren Ellis and Nick Cave as usual 'say' it with the most fitting soundtrack.
There are not many films that are this good that haven't been made by Werner Herzog, enjoy.
Road House (2024)
Conor and his broom handle walk
Starts out looking like a bit of fun with perhaps a redemption story in the making.
But then Conor McGregor turns up and it is obvious that he isn't an actors bootlace.
And what's with the stance and walk? He looks like has is getting around with an invisible broom handle up his jacksy! Very ordinary.
The villain is so bad that I doubt that he would have made it to adulthood, without serious personal injury.
And the father figure? Let's leave that part of the story on the floor next time.
Minimal interaction at the book store then becomes the catalyst for the final fight, not much there.
The redemption story is left out and instead it descends into a joke of a story.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Zack still doesn't get it.
Better than the atrocious treatment given the theatrical release but still a long way from anything that could be called a solid enjoyable experience.
The script is everything in film and this one is pretty lame. The plot is wafer thin, creepy looking box's have been kept under guard for apparently thousands of years until one day they awaken because super man dies, well his death screams crack the box's or ....something like that.
I had not seen anything of the comics and had fresh eyes for this film.
The characters are miscast, cyborg is just awful and the flash is less so...
Don't expect to see any coherent plot here, it's all over the place.....
After Yang (2021)
There is no spoon
A. I. By its very definition cannot be.
If you are to have a learning machine then you must 1st define 'all' it's operating rules.
How would it know if it is able make a decision if it cant compare choice to consequence?
Or are we to believe that all A. I. Would always be safe benevolent and harmless?
If you don't provide the parameters for the computation you end up with a fridge with a dumb look on its otherwise blank face.
Nice attempt at dredging emotional responses from a thing that can never be.....
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
It's all in the screen play
This is an example of story telling at its very best.
If you experience this movie and not come away with thoughts about how you live your own life and how you may set things right even in a small way, then you are a rare person indeed.
Blackfish (2013)
Shame....on us
Powerful documentary that is riveting and also hard to watch.
I have never been to a show that has animals performing, by choice.
I have always felt that animals should be left to exist as they require.
This actually was no surprise to me.
About time others saw it too.
Rollerball (1975)
Lessons to learn
I 1st saw this when I was 14.
I enjoyed it as a hero/action/sports flick with a simple moral message: if you ain't a Rollerballer then you are 2nd best.
Now I see it as a sci-fi premonition classic, this IS the way the corporate world 'tries' to function.
You will only ever be as CNN popular as the boss will allow.
Sports is a massive business that has attracted huge investment from the large international corps and they DO have a degree of influence.
A look to our times from long ago.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
Luc does what he loves
Fast pace!
High action!
Huge cgi budget!
And very typical Luc Besson
As good as Avatar in cgi.
Better storey though
Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
She had me at 'hi'
This is an amazing attempt at Anime that just works..
It's paced like Anime, it assumes the viewer doesn't need a complete back story.
And 4K is the only way to see her do her thang!
Ad Astra (2019)
Stunning!
In 4K this is a masterpiece!
The visuals are stunning, not showy but realistically breathtaking as the settings require.
Physics plays a big role here, I was completely sold on the science.
A quietly told story of humanity through the eye s of a man who has made a career from keeping his emotions in check as he grows to understand sometimes the 'why' is more important than the how.
I love the story.
Mortal Engines (2018)
Meh
The director needs to learn about script, and the part it plays in story telling.
The film looks like a high school play that was given a huge budget.
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011)
Owning it!
I cried..
If this performance does not touch you then you have a heart of stone.
Predestination (2014)
Don't look in the mirror
Nice story comes together in obvious steps.
Somewhat predictable but has depth.
Snook is terrific!
The Witcher (2019)
Perfect blend
This is a rare treat.
A famous epic story told so well that one does not need to have read the books or played the games.
I am entertained to the full.
Cowboys & Aliens (2011)
8 writers! Now there's your problem right there!
Not a bad premise, however it quickly descends into a color by numbers yanks vs aliens.
No room for performances, just read and to the face.
The Punisher (2017)
Revenge in the slow lane
Just
Too
Damn
Slow.....
I watched 4 episodes and kept wondering 'when is it gonna start'?
Mechanic: Resurrection (2016)
Did we expect Pulitzer scripting?
Lol a fun romp in the tradition of hero vs villain.
It's all been done before but this is a good example.
Don't expect a serious script...but expect action action action.
