Polyoty vo sne i nayavu (1983)
An absolute masterpiece
An excellent illustration of a person's life without spiritual values, the absence of any attachment and interest in anything and obvious degradation .. exclusively masterful director's, artistic, and acting work. This movie is an absolute masterpiece of Soviet cinema. We see all this today at the level of world culture - a civilization cut off from the spiritual and historical roots loses its meaning and rolls into a chaos and oblivion
Mary Shelley (2017)
A great, great story well put together
I love the way authors portrayed glamorous characters of the past.. revealing their narcissism and emptiness. Story of Frankenstein comes out of this narrative very naturally i.e. we are becoming co-authors of this magnificent work of literature. A must-see and no doubt in my view. Just to add, beautiful costumes and great acting.
Batalion (2015)
An absolute must-see!
A wonderfully told true story of a very difficult period in the history of Russia. Great script, acting, filmography and scenography. Delighted to see that WWI stories are making to the Russian cinematography. There is good balance between funny lines, drama and action. Horrors of war depicted without exaggeration and unfortunately very common in the movies artistry. Girls remain girls even in the army, even when risking their lives, even at the time of a heroic act. And I think it is exactly that exposes the merciless, cruel face of war. I am glad to see that director is not taking sides in the conflict that was about to bring the Civil war in Russia. His position is very clear nonetheless - war is a brutal crime. Through the dirt mixed with blood and sweat in fearful eyes of the girls of Battalion we can still see much love, and hope, and peace. Peace that doesn't mean the absence of war, but clear conscience and purpose. An absolute must see!
Sa jiao nu ren zui hao ming (2014)
Just go and burn some anger
A wonderful, lighthearted and cheerfully refreshing comedy. This simple story shines quite bright by comparison to gloomy, pretentiously profound and pseudo-historical dramas of modern days. I think despite its obvious simplicity it does strike a cord by pointing to the obvious - most of us most of times tend to over-think and make things more complicated. We also take ourselves more seriously then we should and credit others rather lightly. The acting considering quite young team is very good. It would appear that movie was created for a younger audience, but I am sure that even wider audience will enjoy this funny, romantic adventure. Go and see for yourself!

Love never ends
Yes, I am sure many people will find this movie hard to watch.. and it is. But isn't it so in live - whatever matters takes a part of us and transforms it - and the process is painful. In the movie we see how a bunch of teenagers from a completely different social and cultural background(and that is being stretched in the movie quiet enough) through fear, suffering and death become heroes worthy admiration. It gripped me so that felt I only wished I could stand next to one of them and he would know - I won't fall back. This movie is not glorifying, beautifying the war, it is about the beauty of life, life that is worth living. As I am sure many others I also thought of what "Gioconda" (one of the main characters) says in the movie: "Beauty is when there is nothing unnecessary, no chaff" ("Красота – это когда нет ничего лишнего, никакой шелухи."). To me it's a reference to Psalm 1:4 "Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.". Whatever true, admirable and praiseworthy - will stand the storm. Love never ends
21 Grams (2003)
A great, great story..
A great, great story.. to me, as a Christian, it speaks volumes of my own struggle, but what an amazing abstraction that brings in so many different dimensions, ways of reading and associating with the heroes - a true story of redemption, of finding a proper time and place to die.. to be born! I am sure everyone will find in this movie a character to associate with, to share fears and doubts. Amazing thing is that doesn't matter how weak or wrong people are everyone finds their strength, although maybe not in the way they might have expected. Movie wonderfully reminds how fragile our lives are, how wrong we may be.. and very convincingly, not in a moralistic, forceful manner, it shows that despite this rather hopeless and desperate situation there is hope, there is beauty and meaning - there is life.
