There's Something About Mary (1998)
funny story
This is funny and sometimes ridiculous story. A boy who is geek and ugly is in love with a most popular girl in the school. He asks her to go to prom, but unfortunately he has a strange accident then. Many years passes, but he still loves her. And he hires a private detective. However, the detective also fancy her, so they two starts trying to get her.
I like Cameron Diaz. She is very cute and being a tomboy in this movie. Sometimes there are some bad expression or ridiculous scenes while watching this, but this is the American comedy love. Mary's smile and childlike personality attracts many boys I think.
If you want to watch American comedy, I recommend this.
The Social Network (2010)
difficulties
I wanted to know how Facebook was made. Today, many people use Facebook. It's very useful and fun to have an account. When I heard this was made by a young man, I couldn't believe it. I was expecting there were problems making face book before watching this, but it was much more than my expecting.
A young man Mark is a student of Harvard university and he is an expert of computer. One day, he makes a homepage and this is the start. His excellence at computer becomes business and causes lots of problems especially in relationship with people around him.
This movie goes on very fast, so it was hard to catch every single thing. However, it was good to know the journey of Facebook.
Babe (1995)
they trust each other
I've seen this film many times. fantastic story. This is story about a farmer Hogget and a piglet called Babe try to take part in a shepherd competition together. Babe is not brave enough to control sheep, but he learns how to manage to lead sheep not by barking like dogs do but by making sheep listen to himself.
What most interesting in this movie was Hogget's look. When he looks at babe, he in the beginning doesn't look warmly, but as story goes on it changes gradually. I could read that they trust and rely on each other. And another good point is the friendship between babe and other animals such as Fly, horses, a duck. They are all good friends of Babe giving advice and taking care of Babe.
I haven't seen the movie Babe in the city (Babe2), so I wasn't to watch it immediately.
Life of Pi (2012)
the way of survive
A boy, his nickname is Pi, whose father is the owner of a zoo moves from India to Canada because managing of the zoo gets harder. His family and he board on a cargo ship with animals, but suddenly a storm hits them. Only Pi and some of the animals, such as zebra, orangutan and tiger survives on a small ship. Pi has no way except getting along well with the hungry tiger to survive. Then, the dangerous life starts.
There are many scenes which Pi talks to the God as if the God knows everything what is going on. Pi is interested in three religion Hindu, Christianity. As for me, I don't believe in religion, so it was surprising that Pi depends on the God so much.
I see lots of beautiful scene in this film. What made me most absorbed in was the scene which a whale comes up from the sea. The sea blue, the light, and of course the whale looked awesome. I wanted to see this with 3D one. Anyway, this is worth watching!
The Tree of Life (2011)
the relationship
This story is about family. The father, acted by Brad Pitt, is a strict and serious person and the mother is kind and thoughtful lady. I know this was made in America, but I felt the figure of this family was typical Japanese family image in the past. Father tells children not to talk while eating except the father and tells to act as a gentleman. And if the children do something against him, he gets angry and sometimes becomes violent. The mother wants to tell father it is too strict but she is also afraid of him. So when he is out, she plays outside with the children and laughs together. In the film, the father comes home being tired and sad. Since then, his attitude to the children changes little by little.
When I saw this movie first time, I could't understand anything. What's happening? What's going on? But second time, I could read the father's big love to the family and his hope that the children grow up to be an independent gentleman becomes real. There are lots of scenes in nature like sunrise, sea, forest,,, Those are very beautiful, but I still could not read what those mean in the film. Therefor, I want to watch it again.
Warai no daigaku (2004)
the great actors
Sakisaka, working as an inspector of comedy script, hardly laughs. One day, he meets a scriptwriter named Tsubaki Hajime. Tsubaki comes to him to get the script checked, then it can be on at his theater. However, Sakisaka doesn't say "ok", he asks him to rewrite and bring it the next day. Tsumaki follows his advice and the two come to make the script more interesting together. But it doesn't last so long. One day, Tsubaki brings a sad news with a great comedy script and then,,,
I laughed a lot seeing this movie. Koji Yakusho, acted Sakisaka, is one of the greatest actors in Japan. I'm a big fan of him. Sakisaka is a serious person. He doesn't laugh and dislike comedy, but gradually changes. Yakusho expressed the small change faithfully in the film. And I'm also a fan of Koji Mitani. His movies are always funny and interesting.
This movie must make you laugh and give you bravery to keep going what you like to do.
The King's Speech (2010)
you can do it!
I've seen this movie lots of times. Someone trying to get something over makes me cheer them up.
The king was seriously bad at talking in front of audience in spite of he must do that. He tries to get over the stuttering. One day, he finds a doctor for that, but his ways of therapy are severe and hard, so the king comes to want to give up. But the doctor makes him keep going. And the day the king has to speech comes,,,
I love this story. The methods of therapy made me a little laugh, and I wounder if it is really effective because it was doubtful way. I didn't understand why he feels such responsibility for making nice speech, but I realize how important and difficult to lead people. Finally, I cheered him up saying "Ganbare!!" in front of TV.
If you watch this, you will definitely feel you can do something you are bad at for sure.
(500) Days of Summer (2009)
go forward
Tom, a man working in an office, feels bored for his works and daily life. He dreams to meet an attractive girl some day. One day, a girl named Summer comes his office as an assistant. Tom falls in love with her at first sight. He feels closer to her little by little and he thinks she feels the same way, but in fact,,,
Before I watch this movie, I thought this was just a kind love story I've seen, but it was not an usual film about love. Tom believes love is important and relationship with Summer is serious, while Summer thinks love is just a thing to enjoy. This difference makes the story interesting. I think this kind of love story is more common than any in our daily life. A boy and girl don't always feel the same way, so they break up and find next one. These experiences are steps for you find your fiancé.
What most two interesting things for me are Summer's fashion and music. In the film, Summer wears 80's clothes. The dresses, her hair style all she wears are so cute. And the music plays important roll in the film. The music shows every Tom's feelings. Above all, the music are all good I think. I really recommend you watch this!
Enchanted (2007)
what a real love is
This was my first time to see this kind of Disney love story. Usually, in Disney movie, the prince and princess get together happily, but this was a little different.
A princess looking for love with a prince some day suddenly comes to real world we live in accident. Then she met a man who is a single father. For him, she seems to be strange because she always believes miracles and importance to have a dream. At first, he gets upset because she causes lots of troubles. However, little by little, he comes not to leave her alone. On the other hand, she learns what a date is, what a real love is from him, and she starts to feel staying with him is much fun. But a witch appears and interrupts them.
This story told me how important to stay being happy. We often think dreaming somethings apart from reality are just silly and sometimes make fun of the people who believes that. But we should believe things would be better and hopeful to be happy. Moreover, this told me even if you and your partner have difficulties, you should trust and not to be afraid to take a step forward.
I recommend you watch this.
The Crush (2010)
jealous
A boy who is in elementary school fancies a homeroom teacher. He bumps into her in a street, but she is with her fiancé. He is shocked because he thinks he could marry her sincerely. Next day, he offers the fiancé a duel to a death for who can get her. On the day of duel, he brings a pistol and orders the fiancé to say not to marry her. At first, the fiancé seems unwilling to say that, but gradually he realizes the boy is serious. He finally screams and
In the beginning of this film, I thought this was about childlike love. However, the boy made me scared. I came to know even a child feels strong jealousy. Anyway, this was one of the most shocking, impressive movies I've ever seen.
Lifted (2006)
to operate the spaceship
One night, a big spaceship suddenly appears. A probationer practices how to operate the spaceship. There are lots of buttons which are all identical. The probationer tries to lift a man, but seems to be confused and makes mistakes. An examiner finally comes to be fed up with his mistakes. Then the examiner lifts a man instead of him.
If I was the probationer, I would not be able to do that. However, giving up something is not my style, so I would be very disappointed at myself.
In the film, the examiner gives him another chance to do it. Practical process will make him better at operating it, I think.
Paperman (2012)
go on!
A man and lady both holding lots of paper meet at a station. They don't speak at the time, but there is a good first impression for both. He goes to his office and does the same work checking papers every day, which is too monotonous. However, he sees her in the building next to his office. He tries very hard to make her notice that he is there by flying paper airplanes. He uses all the papers he has, but cannot make it. He is disappointed. Then, suddenly paper airplanes he makes move and take him somewhere. At the same time, the same thing is happening to her. Something good can be expected.
This was fantastic! I love this kind of story. Though these things never happen in real life, I wish something like this happens to me in the future.
Back ground music made me more excited. In an urban busy city, I could hear the sound of car horn. On the way to the station where they meet, hopeful tune can be heard. Everything in this film was beautiful to me.
Three Days in Kamakura (2012)
to be family
A couple, David and Keiko, lives in Kamakura. They don't get on well with each other. It may be because they don't have a child. One day, David brings a small boy and suggests to take him away from his parents. However, Keiko refuses and tells David her real feelings.
This is beautiful movie. It would be difficult issue for a couple not to have a child. They need to think what really important thing is. Supporting each other and leading a happy life for both is an ideal form of married life, I think.
The small boy becomes a catalyst to restore their relationship. He must be needed for them at the point. This film reminds me of family bond and think about a person who I really need. Anyway, I like this story.
Gasman (1997)
the girls' problem
A girl, Lynne, and her brother leave home with their dad. They walk along a railroad track and meet a woman with two children. They go to a Christmas party with dad, but Lynne becomes anxious. The girl and dad get on well, and the girl and Lynne resemble each other. Lynne comes to dislike the girl being familiar with her dad.
It was difficult for me to understand what's going on in this film. I know the feeling of fear when someone who you like is taken from you. She feels lonely and worried, I think. However, on the other hand, the girl who was with the woman is not dressing up and rarely laughs. She must have a hard time. I can sympathize with both of them.
I don't know whether they meet after that or not, but wish they get to be on good terms with each other. This film made me think what family relationship is.
The Lunch Date (1989)
lunch with a stranger
A woman is in a hurry to get a train, but she misses, and to make matters worse, she loses her purse. After that, she goes to a restaurant and orders salad. She leaves her seat for a moment, and she finds a stranger sits in her place and is even eating her salad. She tries to get it back. In the part of the end, the man brings two cups of tea for her and himself. She is surprised. Finally, she realizes she made a mistake. That's a point her strange, bad day changes into happy, interesting day.
At first, she is irritated because of bad incidents. However, a stranger totally changed her mood. What he does is just a small thing, but gives her happiness. This kind of things which makes you feel better is very important and maybe you can do to other people. Even you don't speak to, you can interact or communicate with someone. This film reminds me that it is better to spend time happily and doing something good for others is important.
Knick Knack (1989)
to make friends
A snowman in the glass dome wants to join the party which other knick-knacks are holding, but the glass surrounding him prevents him from taking part. He tries to break the glass using a hammer, drill, and bomb, but he cannot break it. In the end, it seems that he can find another knick-knack and make friends with it, but you will see how much he has bad luck.
I like Pixar movies. This film reminds me of Toy Story. I'd never thought toys have emotion or feelings until I saw Toy Story. This is also about the world of toys. They feel happy, sad, shocked, like human. This may be for kids, but adult can enjoy watching it for sure. This also tells me to be aggressive to have fun or make friends. Pixar movies contain important messages, I think.
Embers (2006)
fear
A wife waits for the return of her husband from the war. She fears that he might have suffered cruel treatment. One day, the husband suddenly comes back. She expects to be pleased, but he brings another fear.
When he comes back in the film, I thought he and she would lead a happy life from then. However, it wasn't that. She is scared that her husband did such a horrible treatment to others. But in my opinion, as for the husband, he must fear himself what he has done. If I were in her shoes, I wouldn't care what he has done during the war. I would be delighted with his return. She must be sensitive.
By and large, this is worth watching. We should know how bad hurting others is.
Otousan no tabako (2007)
the errand
A girl buys s pack of tobacco for her father. She knows smoking can damage health seriously. Her father suffers from a heavy disease, but he is eager to smoke, so he asks the girl to buy tobacco. She is in a dilemma whether to get it or not. All she wants is just having fun with her father and mother like she use to have.
This is about love. It often happens people do what they were asked, because they fear about their relationship with others. However, if you know it is bad for them who you like or love, what would you do? Obey? Refuse? You might be in a dilemma. In my opinion, you must refuse. It is much better to lead a long happy life than having fun or relaxation for a moment. To concern about their real advantage is real love.
In the film, I sympathized with the girl in her suffering. I hope she could get back happiness with her family.
Whacked (1998)
how people act when they are whacked
A man who works at a golf course looks irritated. people practicing golfing there hit the balls at him. At the same time, somehow, people walking in the street suddenly fall down one after another. this awful accident happens because of his irritation.
I was scared by this film. Actually, people sometimes give vent to their stress or anger by attacking others, and the vicious spiral might be endless. This kind of things could happen in my reality life. Therefore, I'll try not to harm others so that I can get peace.
I hope the man in this film will be free from stress. This film was good and made me think how to act when I am whacked.
Father and Daughter (2000)
Family love
one day, a daughter follows her father to see him off going to work by crossing a lake. She watches him until he fades out from her sight. She waits for him whether it's sunny, windy or rainy. No matter how terrible the weather is. She waits, but he does not come back. Time passes. She gets married, has kids and ages...
I was almost crying. Waiting for somebody for a long time makes you sad and anxious. She leads a life, but at the same time she always keeps her father. It is because she cannot forget the figure of him which she saw last I think. The lake changes and dries up, implying that a very long time has passed.
This film has no dialogue and no expression on her face. However, I got to know how she feels by the sound, shadow or even her back.
She is eager to meet her father again, but she probably knows she cannot. If only she could meet her father once again! This story gives me a strong impression of bond among families.
Fish Out of Water (2005)
Do what you like
A man goes to his office by boat because he does't like crowded places. One day, a beautiful woman comes to him and asks him if he can take her to her office by the boat. Day by day, people come to him, but at the same time he feels uncomfortable and ...
The message of this film is "Do what you like" I think. He is not brave enough to say "No" to other people. I have something in common with him. We know we should say "No". No one can control you.
I'm sure that Fish out of water means him. When he does the thing he doesn't like means being out of water, and when he does what he likes means being in water. So, he is exactly the same as a fish. Doing what you don't like makes you almost die.
It is surprising that the film without dialogue has so much information and gives a strong impression.
