To say I was underwhelmed would be an understatement. I thought the combination of Baz Luhrmann and Elvis would be a match made in heaven, but it mostly fell flat for me. One major flaw I saw in this movie is allowing the Colonel to be the narrator. The entire movie is centered around the Colonel's abuse and mismanagement of Elvis, which is a story worth telling, but maybe not in an Elvis biopic? It felt more like a Colonel biopic.
I enjoyed the first half of the movie, with young Elvis getting his rise to stardom, but it felt too rushed. Then the latter part of the movie felt so agonizingly long and boring. In the end, I don't feel I really learned anything new about Elvis. And I'm no superfan, so I'm sure there's plenty I don't know about the King. I just wish it had been more about his life than his mismanagement.
The one reason I gave this movie more than one star is Austin Butler. He truly shines as Elvis and gives an amazing performance. There were many times I couldn't believe it wasn't Elvis' voice being dubbed over- he sounds and moves so much like him!
