Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2023)
For children or for adults? Both?
Well, it is clear from the quality of the presentation and the clear amount of work made by everybody involved. There is clearly an indication that this is clearly more focused on the preferences of children more than for adults. That doesn't always mean that's a bad thing but it is for me.
I prepared for quite a few episodes to watch, but after three, it really was far too tedious to maintain that kind of commitment, I've given up on it now. If I was a child I would've stayed with it but if you're an adult and you're looking for something that feels a little more appropriate for the older, not just the young, then be aware, this is not a film that captures both, this is for one.
Resident Alien (2021)
When drama and comedy collide
That's it, it's all in the title. If you were looking for a reason why it's a bad idea to mix comedy and drama, this show exists to show the world exactly why.
When They See Us (2019)
2 out of 4 ain't bad...
I can't recall a time when I've been so disappointed with the subsequent episodes after having been so impressed by the initial two episodes, if ever there was a show that clearly padded out it's running length it is this one.
The performances of the children in the first episode were truly incredible, the story maintained its interest throughout the first two episodes, however all of the third episode and the first half of the fourth episode were completely pointless. Why this show was ever split into four parts is beyond me, the first two episodes with the last half of the final episode would've made for a fantastic film.
The Boys (2019)
Worst attempt at a cockney accent since Mary Poppins
I don't understand why the average reviews here are so high, the point of a great TV show is to tell a story. The show does a good job of setting up its fundamental premise, which is why I stuck with it, but enduring the appalling acting of Karl Urban as Billy Butcher was torture. It's not just his pathetic attempt at a cockney accent that seems to swerve into Australian/Kiwi for every other syllable, it's the unending tedium of his swearing which fundamentally then makes any real attempt to expressing anger completely meaningless.
The show has so much potential but at least based on the first season doesn't seem to have made any attempt to actually explore some really interesting ideas.
Temple (2019)
Starts well then the decline is unrelenting
It's shows like this that make me realise how incredibly skilled the show runners for Breaking Bad are. I guess this feels a lot like a British attempt at telling a similar story, with a sympathetic protagonist only this one is a surgeon instead of chemistry teacher, but by the end of the second episode it is clearly evident that these two shows have very little else in common. In their defence I think some of the actors do their best to bring the show to life, but the script is just abysmal and try as I might to ignore it, the inconsistencies just compound as the story meanders onward. Tedious.
The Mash Report (2017)
Better than the news! Well, certainly a lot funnier...
If I can't find a way to laugh at our politicians I'd have no choice but to cry. At a time when it's becoming increasingly difficult to differentiate between satire and news headlines this show is a breath of fresh air. It would be good to see both extremes of the continuum targeted more equally, but to be honest given the insane situation that we face politically in the UK right now, who can blame them for taking aim primarily at the ridiculous right ? If you were a fan of Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe, then this is exactly the show you need to tide you over until he gets bored of making Black Mirror episodes.
In all honesty, my main motivation for posting this review was to counter the ludicrous 1/10 10 scores being posted by people with clearly ulterior motives.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Meandering and meaningless
I really don't understand what all the fuss is about. I was entertained, but I was also at a loss to really appreciate what or where the story was going; or is that just naive of me, because this is 'art'? Too long, meandering, and indulgent. That man needs to either employ a better editor, or-more likely-listen to the one he has.
I suspect that if you go into the theatre with a better understanding of the Manson Murders of 1969 you might get more out of it... Maybe as Brit I'm less aware of this event, maybe in the US is well known? Send strange to assume everyone who watches this film will me familiar with it.
