Maryland (2023)
Superb Mini Drama
Excellent acting from this mainly Northern British cast.
Unfortunately, it seems the reviewers who left low marks either didn't watch all episodes - as some admitted - or just didn't understand what it was about.
It's about Family, death, grieving, secrets, but mostly how the human mind can be selfish, feels unloved or unwanted - where it is quite often the opposite
Mostly it's about how different people brought up in similar circumstances can want different things, different lives and different outcomes and how some go for it and some stick with what they think is "right", even when they are not sure themselves.
It's about loneliness when you're have people around you as well as when you are on your own - and how some of us are happy with being in that situation and some are not
This drama is much deeper than it first appears and needs watching again if you didn't get it first time!
Crossfire (2022)
Hours of absolute nonsense
I've never seen anything like this in my life.
I'm guessing it was loosely based on real life events in Tunisia a few years ago, but they could have introduced some sort of story line, or how about even just making it an hour long so as not to put us through such misery.
Hours of complete nonsense, no real story, the odd flash back and and more gratuitous, pointless violence than you can shake a stick at!
We were introduced to the characters so briefly as for it to be impossible to remember who was who.
Usually like Keely Hawes stuff but this is pathetic. Don't waste your time, life's too short!
The Split (2018)
Turned into a bit of a "Chick-Flic"
I hdnt heard of thi, but started watching right from the beginning of series 1.
It started out as a nice mix of decent storylines and an insight into the various relationships going on
Sadly, for me, it turned into something of a "Chick-Flic" (No offense intended) and lost sight of the external storylines.
What was outstanding, was the acting performances of the four main characters - three sisters and their mother - through their vaarious trials and tribulations.
Where Nicola Walker has been all these years I don't now - an absolute star.
Belfast (2021)
Bit Disappointed
I hate watching films after hearing loads of great reviews, as I am invariably disappointed, and this was no exception.
It was a "nice" film, the performance of Jude Hill was fabulous, but the Writers / Directors missed a huge opportunity to delve just a little bit into the "Troubles".
Therefore we were left with a rather insipid film. The story didn't grow, neither did the characters, yet it appeared the timeline was meant to cover quite an extended period.
Bit of a shame really.
The Responder (2022)
Excellent - if you understand what you are watching
This is not a crime drama, a whodunnit or a murder mystery.
It's a job in the police through the eyes of a Frist responder - the poor bugger who has to go to an incident as advised by call handlers.
Oh and it's based on true life recollections - those of Tony Schumacher when he was in Merseyside Police.
Martin Freeman is absolutely excellent, he portrays perfectly the always on call, run-down life of a First responder.
As a Liverpudlian myself, I usually hate non scousers trying to do the accent, but Freeman had it off to a tee.
Fast paced, decent characters, well worth a watch.
Behind Her Eyes: Behind Her Eyes (2021)
Started off Great
Really liked the first few episodes of this, it had the makings of an excellent Psychological thriller
Then it all started going haywire and I'm thinking "Is this some kind of "Fantasy" series ?"
The nonsense of the last two episodes was astounding.
Can't believe it is not described as "Fantasy" by IMDB.
If it had been, I wouldn't have watched it
The Bay (2019)
Well that was disappointing!
I loved the first series, and think Morven Christie is great, so I've been looking forward to this since I heard it was coming back
Well, it started off well, got better and better, reached a crescendo about episode 4 and then withered and tapered away to a dull, watery finish
Sorry guys but must try harder if there is to be another series. Far too much attention paid to private lives than the plot
Oh. The fake Lancashire accents are ridiculous by the way - some turned into yorkshire at one point - and totally unnecessary for the story
I May Destroy You (2020)
A bit weird and a bit Wonderful - Yep! Weird and Wonderful
I must have threatened to stop watching this three of four times throughout the 12 Episodes, but kept coming back to it.
Michaela Coel was outstanding, Paapa Essiedu worrying and Weruche Opia tantalising
Other performances were great too.
However, I'm still not sure I understood EXACTLY what happened in the end.
Worth a Watch though!
Going to watch it all again
The Serpent (2021)
Good but could have been so much better
Firstly, the diving back and forth in time is ridiculous
1969 then 7 years later - 5 years earlier - 3 weeks later - 5 years later. That is all in the first 20 minutes of episode 5. It started in episode 1 and just continued throughout. Completely unnecessary
Then there is the replaying of some scenes, especially in early episodes. This a clear admittance by the director that they made it over complicated by being too clever and showing scenes out of order
Maybe this is why the episodes seemed to drag, you think your 40 minutes in and its only 25.
The story itself is quite good, if a little unbelievable, and the acting is very good from pretty much all the cast, but especially the outstanding female leads.
Worth a watch but cold have been so much better
Come Away (2020)
Wow!
Read the basic info in this and it sounded great
Wow, couldn't have been more wrong. It gets 3 points for the lovely acting from the youngsters
The film itself is so slow and boring
It looked like it was about to get going with 15 minutes to go and my daughter said maybe this is just the first part.
Well no such luck. 5 minutes of "adventure " in the whole film I would say
Don't bother people!
Times & Measures (2020)
1 point
It gets one point for only being (thankfully) 70 minutes long.
70 Minutes of slow, unbelievable nonsense.
Characters didn't fit with each other and little story line
The actors themselves were not believable either.
When I was a kid, I think these films were called "B" Movies
Don't lose 70 minutes of your life watching this. Go fior a walk instead
Alan Bennett's Talking Heads (2020)
Jodie Comer was Superb
Enjoyed a few of these, but they were a little too long and a little dated.
For Example, Jodie Comer (Episode 4) performed superbly, but her talking about "Crossroads" on the tv when she clearly wouldn't have been born, could have been updated to Corrie or Eastenders.
Excellent all the same, except for Jodie's Accent changes, which were All Over the
Place!
The Shallows (2016)
Speechless Really
Really didn't expect that the whole film would be a girl siting on a rock, watching people getting eaten around her, whilst she got off with a bitten leg
Pure unadulterated rubbish. God knows who commissions this stuff
The Salisbury Poisonings (2020)
Absolute Runnish
Dragged out story, over -dramatic performances, poor acting and little to no plot.
God knows why they made it 3 hours long. Could have been done in an hour to 90 minutes and it might have been bearable.
Don't waste your time watching it, just google the story itself and you'll get a better representation from the news coverage.
Homeland: Prisoners of War (2020)
Great Finale to a great TV Programme
A superb ending to probably the best Television series ever created.
No spoilers, but it didn't just fizzle out like so many have done in the past. There was a proper ending, with proper stories for all the characters.
Excellent, just like all episodes of all 8 series. Goodbye old friend - I will miss you!
Yesterday (2019)
Joke of a film for me - and my daughter
My Teenage daughter had been told thos was a great film and a real look into music.
Truth is, it was a joke. it had more in common with Love Actually or any other Rom-Com than a serious look at music.
Don't Bother !
Narcos (2015)
Everythng you need to know
Amazing performances from all cast members which left me feeling I was watching the actual individuals in a documentary.
Extraordinary story, held up by extraordinary performances telling the story of a life that is almost unbelievable - except we know it all happened. Make sure you watch it!
Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)
Absolute Pants
This is just like a teenage Rom Com gone wrong. The story could have been half decent with the plot seeming like a repeat of Moana, But Moana was done MUCH better than this with its Implausible characters
Think it's just a personal Love in for Dwayne Johnson tbh with regular reference to his fitness from himself and making sure all the other characters mentioned it too. If he was made of chocolate he would definitely eat himself. Don't waste two hours of your life!
The Outsider (2020)
10 Hours of my life I'll never get back!!
Just shows how you can drawn into something with a good first couple of episodes and then it all goes to ****.
If they had just made a story out of the first episodes it might have been ok.
Seriously - do something with your life!
Richard Jewell (2019)
Over two hours but a rushed ending
I invariably like movies directed / written / starring Clint Eastwood, so was looking forward to this.
Still not sure why two hours now seems to be a minimum for a film these days, but this actually made it quite easily. I just don't understand how they the timings so wrong and had to "Rush" the last 30/40 minutes.
I felt the (true) story was pretty poorly acted overall, with some very over the top performances. The exception to this was the quite frankly outstanding performance from Paul Walter Hauser as the Title character. Almost Oscar material in my opinion.
Gisaengchung (2019)
Superb!
Funny, Dark, Weird, Wonderful, Predictable, unpredictable.
This movie literally had everything!
I was't even sure I could do two hours + of subtitles, but it was easy in the end. Nice fast pace, bits of humour and bits of darkness.
Nothing not to like, whatever genre of picture you prefer.
Joker (2019)
Wow - All the hype was well deserved after all
So this comes from someone who is not into Super Hero movies and the like but when he one the Oscar for bets Actor, I decided to watch it .
This is outstanding.Yes it's dark and a bit disturbing at times, but it can also be taken as a life lesson to us all .
Extraordinary acting performance from Phoenix and well worth his Oscar.
1917 (2019)
Errrmm
Not getting all the hype here I'm afraid.
Ok, the Cinematography is excellent but I think we've all seen the story before, it was highly predictable - I can honestly say I saw EVERYTHING coming - no twists in it at all.
Acting was average.
Nothing more to say, wasted enough time watching it without wasting more time writing about it
Green Book (2018)
Excellent
Well written and acted, the film dealt with an historical (?) issue very well and sympathetically. Superb performances from Mortensen and Ali which highlighted outdated views superbly.
Well worth a watch and probably it's Oscar for best Film - just not sure why every film has to be 2 hours plus long these days, this could have been done in 90 minutes
White Boy Rick (2018)
Ultimately disappointing
Friends had watched this and enjoyed it. I also knew what to expect and that it wasn't your usual Drug dealer type film. The cross between a crime drama and a family drama worked well. I felt it started well, then they started to rush things from one year to the next . In my opinion, the climax, if it can be called that was also rushed, but somehow, ultimately, the film just fizzled out. Shame really. Different directors might have made this a much better movie
