The Spectacular Now (2013)
Incredible film about youth
I always forget how alcoholism effects the youth of America. It's something we as a culture often over look and or a problem we feel will go away with time. But sometimes bad things happen that can never be erased. The Spectacular Now is a very realistic interpretation of teen relationships. Relationships with each other and the complicated relationships with parents. It's a heartfelt drama and although it's not a perfect film, nor should it be it's a very effective and very well done film. The acting is superb and the story is extremely relevant and powerful.
Most films about high school feel the need to result to humor, to critique the obvious popular kids versus the uncool kids. While the Speculator Now is aware of these plot devices it definitely takes these elements to the next level and puts them in a very believable space. This movie is highly recommended.
You're Next (2011)
Lots of Fun
I just saw You're Next at L.A. Film Fest and it was a blast. Had tons of fun and an amazing crowd. It's Home Invasion, which means Home Alone meets the ending of Straw Dogs. Does it reinvent the genre with a new twist? Possibly. It's definitely a fresh look at the genre. It's starts of pretty serious but transitions to humor and its smooth sailing from there on. Regardless, you're in for a real treat. Sure there is lots of violence and some actors outweigh others in the talent department but that's what makes the movie unique and interesting. It definitely keeps you on the tip of your toes. If you love horror films you have to see this!!!
Brainwashed Love (2011)
Rough around the edges but powerful
I recently saw Brainwashed Love at a film fest and found it to be a very powerful film. It's far from perfect but Brainwashed Love has a very amazing female lead character that I really fell in love with. Her acting is very good and wow near the end of film I was in tears. I really recommend this to people who love indie dramas. The music choices are solid and really capture a nice atmosphere in Los Angeles. Even though some of the supporting actors are uneven I found it to be a real fresh look at youth culture in America and sure it makes me feel old and out of touch but no matter what there are inherit problems in life that we can all relate to. It's also nice to see an interesting female character in a movie. This is something I find most movies lacking and it's really a shame. Anyways if you like indie dramas definitely give this movie a chance.
