Didn't live up to the hype for me
27 July 2008
Well, i'm fighting a gushing torrent of positive opinion here, but i think this film is in no way anywhere near a masterpiece of cinema, the main reasons being that the plot is poor, the film is far too long and that it is also balanced far too far in favour of the villains.

The movie started brilliantly with an excellent bank robbery scene, and continued with aplomb until about halfway through, when the flow of the film just stalled. The plot just stopped making sense with the joker seemingly sauntering around Gotham with face paint on and obvious facial scars doing exactly what he wanted and nobody even noticing this strange man. He would stick out like a sore thumb wouldn't he? why did batman have so much trouble finding him? At about this time in the movie i really started losing interested due to the many plot flaws and inconsistencies on top of the fact that we were about 1hr 30 minutes through the film with no ending in site.

And, yes, the film is too long, and thats because the plot is too convoluted. And you couldn't cut anything out because the film would suffer even more from it. I would even imagine a lot was cut out anyway, particularly from the latter half of the film.

The joker dominates the film from start to end and you would think this is a good thing because heath ledger does a great job portraying him. But its too much of a good thing - it just unbalances the film - it makes it too dark, too downbeat. I was expecting batman to come into his own in the later half of the film to balance the darkness of the first half, but he doesn't - another villain joins instead! I just think this film is vastly overrated and nowhere near as good as the original. Batman Begins was more consistent in its portrayal of the batman universe - the current batman franchise is based on a brutal realism but Dark Knight had too many flaws that undermined this, from the unrealistic plot elements to Harvey Two-Face's ridiculously over-the-top and unbelievable cgi facial damage.

Lastly, the film has compromised itself by trying to pander to general cinema audiences. In the UK the film was given a 12a rating which means practically anyone can see it. So the blood and violence has been reduced. But the nasty tone of the film remains with many scenes of implied violence that are probably worse than actually seeing it. It is in fact a very violent film with many sadistic torture scenes that are in no way suitable for people under 15.

Having written all this, i still thought the film was OK but in no way the masterpiece everyone thinks it is. I was expecting much more and it didn't live up to the hype for me. But once everyone calms down a bit and looks at the film again in the cold light of day, i think time will judge this as an above average action movie with a good turn from the joker that really does go on a bit too long.

Sweeney Todd (2006 TV Movie)

How did they make a musical out of this story?
3 January 2006
This film was made for UK TV, but its a lot better than the majority of Hollywood pap out there. Admittedly it will not be to everyones taste, but that goes without saying. It a simple tale really, but the film gives it a depth i was not expecting.

For me, it was the acting that really makes it stand out - Ray Winstone and David Warner are outstanding.

Ray shows Sweeney to be a kind compassionate person who also just happens to kill people. His character is one of great contradictions then, but his actions highlight the fact that we are all as human beings capable of feats of kindness and also great evil if circumstances dictate.

The script is excellent too, keeping the pace moving nicely, but having time to delve into aspects of religion and philosophy that give the actions of todd a profound resonance.

Overall, an excellent film, highly recommended. But how did they make a musical out of such a macabre tale?

failure is relative
11 May 2005
Well, i thought this film was going to be an uncomfortable and depressing experience, dealing as it does with personal failure and the jealousy, despondency and self-loathing it can create. But as it turns out, this film is a gem - real, uplifting, moving but unsentimental. It illustrates perfectly how people's unfulfilled aspirations and desires and their search for "success" can blind them to the true worthwhile and positive aspects of themselves and their lives.

I'm currently reading a book about status anxiety. This is a human condition that is rampant in modern society and it effects all of us to some extent - the need to keep up appearances with our peers (in a material sense) or else believe ourselves to be unloved, useless failures. money = success. This film illustrates this condition perfectly. It also shows us that no one can be a "loser" when they have good friends, people they love and care about and can have fun with. At the end of the day who is the real loser? The millionaire with no friends (real that is) or the toilet attendant with many?

Very few films like this are made any more - intelligent, though-provoking, profound and uncompromising. No car chases, no unnecessary violence, no product placement, just a very good film.

probably the best Asian horror after the ring
9 March 2005
Not that i've seen every Asian horror movie out there of course. i've seen most of the biggies though - ring, ring 2, ju-on, dark water, cure, plus some others i can't remember the names of, and this is up there with the best.

Style-wise its not very original and borrows heavily from the Ring in its presentation, but whats wrong with that? Especially when its done as well as this. It's also scarier than the ring in terms of jump-out- of-the-seat moments, though it doesn't have any scenes quite on a par with the ring's freaky crawl out the telly scene, but then that's probably the best horror scene ever so I can forgive it for that! As well as the scares you've got good acting, good well structured plot and a really great ending - I didn't see it coming at all.

In conclusion, if you liked the ring you will love this. 9/10

great but grim
4 February 2005
Wow, what a movie. I hooked on to this cos i saw aronovsky's previous "pi" -which which was so off the wall and utterly superb- and this one did not not disappoint. The film was so concise, not a frame was wasted, beautiful editing. Whether short and sharp, or long and lingering, it was just perfect. And one of the best trip scenes to boot. I won't say where, you'll know it when you see it.

If "spun" was the ying then this is the yang of drug movies. Both attempt to simulate the drug taking process through cam effects, but whereas "spun" took a more light hearted approach this went much deeper and darker and is the better film for it. I've taken a lot of different drugs in my time (though not the h, i'm not stupid!) and at the end of the day drugs are not funny, they tend to f**k you up. This is a film that shows the sharp end of the drug stick, then stabs you in the eye with it. It hurts but it's good!
