Ladies They Talk About (1933)
OK for Stanwyck, but not her best
Good; but not great, role for Stanwyck. The producers erred in one major way with the making of this film, in that they made it in 1933, and the new prison for women in CA. had opened in 1932 at Tehachapi, so whoever was responsible for the story was not paying much attention to the timeline or the news of those days and times. Otherwise good film-what can I say? I am a nit-pick and like to research the making of films that I enjoy watching.
To be truly forthright the only reason I chose to research this one is because I recently watched (again!) "I Want to Live" with the great Susan Hayward and that was a true story that took place in the 1950's about Barbara Graham who was executed in San Quentin, but resided at Tehachapi until the day before her execution, when she was transported to San Quentin for execution the following night. Therefore, I was not even aware that they had ever even housed female inmates at San Quentin; thus I was moved to research how correct this film was.
Capturing Mary (2007)
One of Maggie Smith's best!
I feel as if the ghost that Mary rid herself of of was herself. That is why she continually referred to what I call her spectre as a ghost, but not quite. She had preconceived notions about herself and the world at the time her younger self is introduced in this film. She left that ghost with Joe, the caretaker of the house. She was compelled to follow Greville into the cellar, just as Joe was compelled to let her into the house as he had never done w/someone who came calling ever before. And Joe is left pondering Mary and why he was so affected by her. A magnificent film that is one more fantastic addition to Maggie Smith's sublime filmography. I truly DO NOT understand the negative commentary by other reviewers--you just have to let the film flow, and it will come to you.
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011)
a spoiler for a bad state of mind...
I loved this film! Reasoning behind the summary? Our family went through a tragic event involving the death of an extremely young family member. This was the first thing I have even attempted looking at that involved a true gear shift in my brain, and I was overjoyed with the time employed in watching it at the film's end. Every character (and the plot, as well) were extremely well fleshed out, and each title role's actor was, really, the perfect choice. I did not even know that it was even possible for me to dislike Kristen Scott Thomas so completely in a role, BUT I DID! Please give this fine film (in my opinion, anyway) the attention it deserves -restart it if needed, because I did after about five minutes, because I realized how worthwhile watching it would be for me THAT QUICK!!!
