5th Passenger (2017)

I tried to like it out of respect for several actors who have been in the Startrek franchise.. The biggest problem, it is so poorly written. It was sad to see some of my favorite Startrek actors, basically ravaged by age (in real life).. They seem to be a shell of who they were in their prime. Most of the other actors were downright bad. The script was so poor, even the talented actors, were bound and gagged with ridiculous plot and dialogue to go thru.

I gave up after 25 minutes.. this move just plain sucks..

Riddick (2013)

Very good

I love the Riddick movies.. This bizarre planet, the creatures, the mysteriousness of Riddick and him narrating parts of it. They have their own brand of uniqueness, it has it's own environment, much like Startrek and Stargate, had their whole own universe..(I'm certainly not comparing this to above franchises.

This one isn't as 'abstract' as the others. It kind of filled in our understanding of Riddick a bit more and the world he lives in.. There were some small bits of humor, and light-heartedness. Plenty of strong action, and violence. The supporting actors contributed also. Every once in a while, you get a hint, Riddick, might have some other powers, strengths, we are not aware of yet.

If you liked the previous Riddick, this is more, slightly different, you won't be dis-appointed.. I hope Vin Diesel continues to make a couple more sequels..

I watched this when it first came out.. Just watched the whole thing again.. I was surprised at how well, it stood up to the passage of time.. I don't know how much Spielberg actually had a hand in this, but it does carry much of his expert film making. Some of it, especially the early episodes, remind us original 'baby boomers' of the 'wonder ness' of those years.

The fact it cover cult-decades, and several generations, it is extremely well put together. There is not a lot of special effects. But just enough at the right moments. It's more a human nature series.

While we have gotten used to super fancy CGI effects, and razor fast, radical edits. I appreciated the pace of this very much.. Yes, some episodes are better than others. I didn't pay attention to who directed which episodes, but I did notice some difference. I think for the scope it covered, it is a well executes series.

The Florida Project (2017)

I eventually gave up on this movie.. The 'local color' was interesting for a bit. But I got the feeling there was no script, just felt like someone's home movie, wandering here and there. Yes, the kids were interesting a bit.. But the truth is, I didn't really care what happened to any of the characters.

I'm seeing a lot of other good review here.. but I felt like it was a waste of time

Yes, it has that original flavor of Twilight Zone, except it is 2018, and it's done very slickly.. Subtlety, they don't have to bash you over the head with nudity, sex, being 'trans' trendy like other shows.. Which also makes this a show which will 'age' well.

It will still be very viewable years done the line..

The quality is in the writing, the casting, the actors, the cinema photography, all very well executed.. The inter-weaving, never lets you get bored by one scene.. and they keep the pacing excellent.. Very well done.

It seems all hit movies these days follow one of 4 plots, This is different.

It has aspects of all genres, but sticks to none. The note to detail, of the period is art in itself. The creature is magnificent. Only hints of his powers and abilities, with one or two demonstrations. His powers are not really displayed to the fullest rather referred too, with just enough evidence for you to believe he is capable of amazing things.

Not like the Marvel movies, were you are just clobbered over the head with super abilities. It is tender, delicate. The acting, directing, casting is all top notch.

It was a joy to watch.

The Pirates of Somalia (2017)

Entertaining, informative, and made me care about Somalia

This is a nice movie.. It's not pretentious. It's more about self-realization, and interactions with people.. The movie is very well cast, and dialog well constructed. There are several supporting roles, which are quite interesting.

The thing about this movie I really liked and it really doesn't happen that much anymore, Is that I felt like I got to know the characters, and I cared and liked them. They each are working their way thru their own issues, which are not really the focus of the movie (or is it?)

I do wish they explored the parents more, especially Melonie Griffith. It could have added even more to this gem.

Too many movies these day are just lame. Or they try and clobber you over the head, with visuals, super-powers, end of the world threats.

This movie is entertaining, but also has points to think about it. It made me go and read up about Somalia, which has an amazing story to it's very long existence.

In short, this movie, entertained, informed, and made me think about things. something so rarely accomplished anymore.

The Man from Earth: Holocene (2017)

Could have been done a lot better, still I 1/2 enjoyed it.

First the concept of this movie is great.. There is just so much potential for it to go to amazing places.. Most of the cast does a decent job, Lead is actually quite good.

The problem is the writing. The premise of the movie is still fresh. To my recollection I have seen two other movies based on the same premise. They were better. Still I watched the movie to the end. It does have a couple of moments.

At least it's not another zombie movie.Because this particular premise has only been tackled a couple of times. I enjoyed it.

Someone will eventually make an incredible movie based on this premise. This particular movie is like a rather plain cardboard appetizer. Not inedible, but it could have been so much tastier. I've wasted 90 minutes on movies much worse. One redeeming quality of this movie is I'm left with ideas to ponder, and questions to ask. For that reason alone I gave it score I did.

9/11 (2017)

This has some power.

First it's very hard to fill that amount of time in a small tiny enclosed area. There are other scenes, but the majority is shot inside the elevator. I thought this was pretty well done. Casting good. It brought tears to my eyes a few times. having livied in NYC when this happened.

I thought everyone gave a decent performance. Very somber material, well done.

Don't understand why so many people bad mouth it.

I tried to watch this for 30 minutes.. I had to give up. I can't even bother to mention everything wrong with it.

I'm shocked at the unevenness of the reviews here. Usually you can read the reviews, and then the user reviews, and get a sense about whether you want to watch it. seeing the unevenness of scores here, makes me begin to think 'FAKE NEWS'

Some calling it brilliant, others feeling like I do.. Time was, I would automatically watch a Will Smith movie, because I felt they were consistently good. Lately I just don't understand how he is picking the movies to star in..

Flowers for Algernon (2000 TV Movie)

A great movie

Modine is positively amazing as he traverses thru this movie. It starts light hearted and humorous. It brings up some very fine points. Pacing moves right along, and brings about some fairly profound insight into the nature and heart of man..

Even what could have been a tragic end is transformed back into the simplistic beauty with which the story began.

This movie will make you smile, laugh, shed a tear, and lead to some real 'aha' moments for the viewer. If every person in the world could see this movie, Earth would be a better place.

Alien Arrival (2016)

What I like about this movie, is how it unravels and plays out, just enough mystique. It is not your typical sci-fi.

The acting is damn decent. Plot is intriguing and unusual. It does get a bit 'out there'. But the fact that it is different, and not full of CGI and big explosions.. makes it a 'diamond in the rough'..

This move really shows the strength, and power of the human psyche.. Beautifully done, they walked the fine line of story delivery, without resorting to clichesa a movie like this could have easily fallen into..

The main actors are top notch.. Very finessed acting, that felt so real. You can plainly see the un-stopable power of the the human condition, in times of extreme duress.

It will bring tears to your eyes, while you are smiling thru some scenes.. And those of us older, might have experienced or been witness to friends, loved ones, in a similar situation..

This movie reminded me of the power and strength of human love and the power of determination in seemingly insurmountable odds.

This is a great movie.. I really wish I had the honor to have known or been aware of Robin Cavindish (all pre internet - so).. His life and death is a true depiction of humans at their best.

Flatliners (2017)

While everyone seems to be bad mouthing this movie; I liked it because it has a subject that hasn't been beaten into total death.. It has some SCARY moments, and doesn't involve mindless zombies, which seems mandatory for any horror movie these days..

They make a cute little moral point.. It covers what the first Flatliners did, which I'd have to say was better.. But I rode this out to the end. I wasn't compelled to stop watching it. There are certainly a ton of movies worse..

I don't think I'd want to spend $15 on this, but it is a lot better than some of the low end content Amazon Prime has.

Undercover Grandpa (2017)

The movie had some charm, and a bumbling comedic uplift.. Some great actors. Technically Looked sharp, fault with the clichéd way overdone plot.. May have worked better if the grandpas' were 10 years younger..Kinda sad, to see these great actors, have aged so much..

Still it was a 'feel good' piece of fluff movie..It did get me to laugh and smile a few t times. I did enjoy it, Given the material they had to work with, all actors did a great job..

Atomic Blonde (2017)

Movie looks great at first.. She can kick ass. But after a while, that's all there is.. Music soundtrack is good.. They completely overdo the scattered video editing. After a while you become numb, cause you can't really keep track of what is going on.

On the surface, the movie has everything going for it.. But in reality, it is a hot mess.

But if you enjoy watching a hot blonde beat the crap out of men.. you'll like it.

Foreverland (2011)

Quite an enjoyable movie. A spiritual adventure for a young man. It was pleasurable with it's twists and turns..This is a real movie with a plot and capable actors, unlike most of the junk that is released today. No computer generated special effects.

An honest believable plot. that gracefully reveals itself at just the right pace.

There was a hint of the supernatural, done in the way without no gimmicks. The young man was totally believable. I'm sure most viewers will relate to him in some way whether they have a life threatening illness or not. Reminded me of myself, when I would hitchhike a lot as a young man. The world was so much simpler then.

It was a work of love for the director, he gave this movie 'soul'...
