The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
Fantastic acting, but...
Set on a remote island off the coast of mainland Ireland one hundred years ago. It follows the inexplicable breakdown of a friendship between two of the island's inhabitants.
Lifelong friends. Padraic is unsettled when his best friend Colm tells him one day that he no longer wants to be his friend.
All the main characters are superbly portrayed. Colin Farrell was very moving, not his usual type of character. Brendon Gleeson is always worth watching.
Ultimately, I was hoping for a final denouement. However at the end left a bit disappointed.
Still worth watching for the aforementioned acting and the lovely scenery.
Thirteen Lives (2022)
Real life superheroes
I love the Marvel and DC movies. The Avengers, Justice League and all of those amazing spectaculars. However, the people who put their lives on the line to rescue the children from the caves in Thailand...
I am an ex-firefighter and I salute them, the best of humanity. Swimming through 4km of underground flooded caves to rescue someone you don't even know. Real superheroes!
What an amazing dramatisation of a real life event. Thank you.
Invasion (2021)
This is not about little green men. Much more clever than that!
I read some of the negative reviews, with some people complaining that, "Have watched over 5 hours and not see a alien yet". What if the alien invading the planet is nothing like the 'typical' sci-fi alien, you know vaguely human shaped but scary. Two arm, two legs and a mouthful of teeth. What if a true alien was like nothing we could imagine, and what if the 'invasion' was also like nothing we could imagine. Not guns and warships, but far more subtle and truly scary. An insidious and slow destruction of our societies, a gradual invasion by creatures we would not recognise, slowly but systematically infecting us.
I don't know yet, only on episode 4, but that is what I think is happening, and if so, how clever. Really enjoying it so far!
Midnight Mass: Book IV: Lamentations (2021)
When we die
Riley's dialogue explaining what he thinks will happen to him when he dies, was in my opinion, a wonderful explanation of what will 'probably' happen when I die. And, I like the idea!
Get Shorty (2017)
Very, very watchable
Wasn't sure if I would like this at first. I'm a fan of the original John Travolta and Gene Hackman movie, and was a bit wary that it would suffer in comparison. Not at all! Chris O'Dowd doesn't try to be Travolta and the directors don't try to make it like the movie and it is all the better for it.
Of course the basic premise is the same, an enforcer for a gangster, refreshingly played by Lidia Porto as the scary Amara, is tired of the life and business he is in and an opportunity presents to work on a movie in Hollywood. This time however, our 'hero' has other issue, in particular his estranged wife and daughter.
If you enjoyed, as I did, Breaking Bad and offshoot Better Call Saul, then you will probably enjoy Get Shorty.
