The Last of Us (2023)
Good, but could have been great.
May be it is because of the 10 out of 10 opening episode that I feel a little disappointed after 4 episodes now. And it is not because of episode 3 because I actually liked that episode, but it was to soon for a background story imo. And now episode 4 also didn't pick up the pace. To be honest it is getting boring...
I still have high hopes because they showed how good it can be in the first and partly the second episode.
I still like the world building and the relationship build up between the lead characters. But where the first 3 episodes demanded my attention, they lost me in the 4th episode.
For me it is going a point down each episode so I am now at a 7 out of 10. Let's hope it will climb up again to the excellent start and will end somewhere between an 8 and a 9.
Update: after episode 6 for me it is back to an 8. It is a different serie then I expected but somehow it gets me emotionally. Great acting and the story is really about the relationship between the two leads. Can't wait for the rest of the season!
Episode 7, another letdown, long and boring with nothing really happening... back to 7 out of 10
Episode 8, better but gona leave my score at 7 till I have seen the season final.
After episode 9 still a 7 out of 10. Not going into spoilers. Just want to say this could have been one of the better shows but a couple of episodes bring it down and allthough they do make it up with a couple of really good episodes it doesn't really recover.
Still worth the watch and it is a good show, but it could have been great. If I was to rewatch it I would skip ep 4, 5 and 7 (may be 3 depending on my mood) and will love it!
Looking forward to season 2.
Klem (2017)
Much better then I suspected
It took some time to set the stage but once the relations were established it got under my skin and I just kept on watching. Really rooting for the characters and hoping they could solve their problems. I am dutch and am always very critical on dutch series. But this is a quality series worth the watch. And I think also people outside the Netherlands will enjoy it. No over the top action and I found the story to be believable witch also is a big plus. Also the children do a good job (normally I can't stand children in series...) It even brought tears to my eyes in some cases.
I give Klem an 8 out of 10.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
It gets beter every episode
At first I did not like it at all. The acting (of some of the actors) seems of and it started out looking a bit 'cheap'. But I have to say six episodes in and the story is getting interesting and I really want to see where it goes (havn't read the books). Allthough the younger actors are still not the best they also begin to grow on me.
So long story short it seems to get better every episode. It started out a 4/10 for me, and now, six episodes in, I rate it 7/10. May be once we get to episode 10 I will rate it even higher, time will tell (pun intended).
Cowboy Bebop (2021)
I like it!
I liked the anime when I watched it back in the day, enjoyed it from my teenager eyes. I am glad they didn't take the anime to serious and just made a fun live action show out of it. Is it the anime? Nope. Is it Cowboy Bebop? Yes! The music, the special effects, the humor, all spot on! So just watch and enjoy!
Altered Carbon (2018)
Dumbed down second season...
Where the first season demanded my attention, the second did not. Shame because I really wanted to like it. Enjoyed the first season very much and was looking forward to the second.
But allthough I forced myself through I did not even finish episode 8... I just didn't care about the characters, the story or anything going on. No Chemistry between the charactres either, the main character keeps saying he is in love but no where did I see it.
I do understand that the main guy is in a different sleeve but I did not see any clue that he was supposed to be the same guy as in season one. They are the same dudes inside right? Well, it did not show.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Seeing it through the eyes of my 11 year old son
I've grown up with Star Wars. Never will a Star Wars movie have the same impact on me as the Empire Strikes Back had when I was a kid. But after leaving the movie with my 11 year old son, who has seen all Star Wars movies there are, I asked him what he thought about the movie. His answer was short an much saying: "The best Star Wars movie ever!"
Oke I don't agree with him, but I think this has more to do with nostalgia. For him this is the best Star Wars movie there is and I guess, seeing it through his eyes, it is. It has everything a kid could want in a Star Wars adventure.
So my advise is, don't go in expecting it to be the movie you have seen as a kid or the movie you want it to be, but look at this movie through the eyes of an 11 year old and see the magic!
The Dark Tower (2017)
A tale set in the world of
This is my fist review on IMDb. I feel the need to write it because I love the books but well, I also like the film. Watch it, there really are spoilers in my review. I don't think these spoilers will ruin the film for you but just so you know. I think for fans of the books it would be a good thing to read it so you go into the film with the right mindset. But that choice is up to you off course.
To begin, the film is not as dark as the books. The things that make the books so good are the difficult and dark themes. Addiction, racism, sex, murder, abuse and more. Also Roland, in the books, is a sick looking, blue eyed male which is a thing when he meets up with Detta in the books. (So Idris Alba for me doesn't even come close to the man I imagined Roland to be).
Also, in the film they try to explain things that in the book stay a mystery (like doors opening up in thin air). And a lot of the psychology is lost. I think the makers did not dare to show all stuff as they are written. Shame, but I do understand that it would make a lot of people angry if they did.
So all this is not found in the movie. But, it really is a good film. As I already dropped his name, Idris Alba played a very good gunslinger! This movie is loosely based on The Dark Tower novels, and if you look at it this way then it is really fun to watch. They still made a good dark tale and the world/worlds they created are really cool and, for me, spot on. Also the man in black is not the guy as how he is described in the book, but man, is he a bad guy!
So when you go and see it,keep an open mind and don't expect to see a one on one adaptation of the books but more a tale set in the world of The Dark Tower, and I am sure you will enjoy it!
