Peter & the Wolf (2006)
Best Peter and the Wolf adaptation.
I saw this film almost by accident, and I am very grateful. Everything to the last detail is meticulously cared for. The puppets are incredibly detailed, the animation perfectly done, the lighting excellent and the acting superb. But most of all, the story... this story has a little but very meaningful twist at the end and still manages to be true to the original. Disney's Peter and the Wolf may be cute and charming, but lacks the depth of this masterpiece. Tempelton's Peter has some strong personality and penetrating eyes. Some people might find it slow, but only if they want to watch everything move at the pace of Fairly Odd Parents. I'm glad I lived to see this work and I hope many people has the opportunity and disposition to watch this.
Los supersabios (1978)
Only of historical value
Los Supersabios is a movie based on the great comic of the same name by Mexican writer and artist Germán Butze. It is about a group of young boys who secretly build a rocket to travel to other planets. Unfortunately, the movie has no plot at all: is as if the writers came up with the next scene once they seen the previous one. The ending is irrelevant to anything that happened before, and some sequences seem to be there only to fill time (like the part where the group goes to see a band playing). The movie has great moments (the part where Panza is inside the transparent living balloon), but the script cannot stand up. In all, it is an interesting effort, but a terrible movie, only important for being one of the six (count'em: SIX) animated movies ever made in Mexico to this date. The comic is amazing, read it!
Magos y gigantes (2003)
Nice characters and dialog, poor animation, worse backgrounds
The amazing thing about this movie is that it was made with a very limited crew. Having said that, here are my opinions:
1.- The dialog is funny and the voices great. 2.- The character design, great. The characters are lovable and cute. 3.- The animation is very limited, but that's understandable due the small crew. 4.- The backgrounds are horribly flat and uninspiring. 2D animation doesn't mean you can't use perspective! 5.- The story is derivative and predictable without any depth. Having a low budget is no excuse for having a shallow storyline.
This criticism is just to encourage Anima to make better movies and spending more time with the script. I would love to see an animation industry develop in Mexico.
