Jekyll Island (2017)
Really bad.
Well what can I say, that was a waste of time. The acting is bad and the story looks like everything was put together last minute with very little research etc. The music background was tacky and such a cliché and so where a bunch of quotes and monologues. The conclusion is predictable the cinematography... well there is none and even the costumes look like they were bought from the nearest mall. Generally, it felt more like a drama class project and less than a professional job. I gave it 3 stars and in my most generous mood I wouldn't rate it with more than a 4. I would strongly advice for choosing another film to watch tonight.
Autumn Blood (2013)
Worth to watch.
Beauty and crudeness, soft and hard, good and evil, innocence and corruption, determination and fear, delivered in all aspects of this film. The antithesis is there in both the scenery and the characters' growth.
The cinematography is stunning. The acting is great by everyone, the leading actress being the one standing out.
From a filmmaking point of view, we have such a great idea and the execution was good enough to make it run but neither strong nor poetic enough to make it fly. This failure to launch is the reason I gave it no more than 7 out of 10 stars.
Immortals (2011)
Unfortunately I cannot "unsee" that.
Well... that was a waste of 39 minutes!! Although I am not the viewer to leave in the middle of a film, I could not bring myself to watch this one.
I was aware that the plot was fictional, hence I did not expect to view a take on historical events. However, even in fiction there is common sense.
It would take the extreme amount of 2 hours of internet search (maybe?), on behalf of the creators, to spare our poor braincells from this nonsense.
Examples (spoiler alert):
- "Stavros" is a Christian name. - There is a wall painting a few minutes in the film, depicting a king or a god (too busy eyerolling to remember), that its style is straight from the byzantium era. - The priests were supposed to be talking in ancient Greek. The reason they don't make any sense to the Greek speakers is not (just) because of the lack of acting effort but also because the ancient Greek words used, were basically random. - The phrase "kolpos peninsula" is used as a geographical name. "Kolpos" is the Greek word for "bay" and peninsula is, well, quite the opposite. So, which is it gentlemen? A gulf or a peninsula? Have you graduated primary school? - 39 minutes in and while trying to concentrate on the plot, I heard one of the characters using the word "monastery" in the dialogue. At that point I gave up trying to watch the film.
Implementing Christian era references in an ancient Greek film is like watching President Lincoln tweeting his wife from battlefield.
Do yourselves a favor and choose to watch some other film.
