The Rehearsal (2022)
Great but polarizing
I loved all the first episodes. They went deep, they were well planned, high budget, and so off-the-wall weird and creative.
But the last two episodes got a little too personal in my opinion. From my experience going through transitions from Christianity to Judaism to New-agey, I can relate to all the perspectives shown and I feel the average person identifying with any of the religions portrayed would probably be offended.
On the other hand, I'd like to think people can take a step back and not take it personally. I guess that's why I love Sacha Baron Cohen too.
Over all, I think The Rehearsal was set up masterfully, to cater to all audiences and still get people thinking a bit; but then they blew it by going too deep in the Christianity/Judaism episode and then going too deep on how Nathan and Remy were affected by the acting.
From a higher perspective it's really admirable to go all out and show the difficult emotions that actually impact viewers personally! (Assuming the "real" emotions were actually real as portrayed). But I think that depth is going to turn off half of the audience.
I think nonreligious people will like it. I think, how Hustler was for either the working class or super wealthy intellectuals, but middle class hated it, same concept applies here. In my opinion, it was a great show! On the same high level as Nathan For You. Hope to see more shows like this!
Jesus Revolution (2023)
One of the best Christian Films
I'm not a big fan of Christian films as they often force religion into the movie; but this time it flowed.
Great well rounded character development, and pretty good job presenting a neutral perspective throughout. I especially liked how they presented the hippies as well-meaning and logical people.
It would have been better in my opinion to highlight the fact that our beliefs create our reality, rather than focusing on surface level church doctrine. I am a Christian because I know it's true allegorically; and am a hippy because the plants teach the same message but in a clearer way. So coming from both perspectives, I would've preferred a deeper explanation of Christianity or a fuller acceptance of plant medicine.
But all in all, very good and actually enjoyable to watch unlike many Christian movies I've seen.
Twin Peaks: The Return (2017)
Too Far From Normal
I usually like weird things. But I didn't really like this. I felt the editing was horrendous with horrible pacing and too much irrelevance. I thought I would understand it as a whole eventually but I did not. I thought the random scenes would fit in to the story later on but they did not. They added nothing of value. For example, there was a scene of the Las Vegas police checking out a new tail light one of them got on their personal vehicle. There were lots of pointless scenes like this. Some may argue that it makes it more realistic, but I'm watching a movie. If I want realism, I can go live life.
The scenes revolving around Dougie Jones were almost exclusively the interesting ones. These made the rest bearable. Barely. Lots of depressing, dark scenes, and pointless music at a bar that didn't even need to appear in this season as it had no significance whatsoever. Audrey went there, but I don't think she was significant either. If so, it was lost on me. And random people talking in the bar? What was the point?
I would've enjoyed this a lot more if it were cut down by at least half. Sometimes long drawn out parts play a role in building tension or crescendo, but they rarely achieved that effect here. Maybe some will like the off-the-wall artsy film style of whatever this is, but it will be lost on the majority of us. I feel like Lynch had an inside joke with only himself and he made this for his own sole enjoyment.
To draw to a conclusion (one thing I wish Lynch would've done much faster, or heck, at all), the ending is inexplicable, and there are many large elements that go completely unexplained. Maybe I will have a flash of insight later and if so I will change this review, but the ending resolved nothing for me.
I appreciated the creative license and I loved the deadpan humor interspersed in such tense and sad situations. It worked really well sometimes, but most of it came across stupid, lame, and just plain offbeat to me.
I'm glad I watched the show. I enjoyed it for Dougie and Agent Cooper's recovery. There were a few beautiful moments. But it was overall a big letdown.

Thought Provoking
Take care of yourself first; only a filled cup can pour into others.
The pastor could be happy alone or with anyone. He tried to help people who he couldn't help and his joy drained with theirs. He was a self-created martyr. His pain was unnecessary, as he himself said earlier.
The wife could be happy alone or with anyone. She was in it for the emotional roller coaster. She wants emotion of any sort rather than mundane steady happiness. She states her failures in the beginning and they strongly allude to this.
Both mothers see the future. Our family generally knows us apart from our self-delusion. Respect other people and consider their perspectives. Then make your own decisions. But the mothers couldn't stop fate. Best to go with the flow when fate is unavoidable.
Painful to watch but bittersweet because we can choose to avoid this sort of pain. We can choose decisions which give us joy, and when we have joy, then the joy is shared naturally with others.
