Gawain and the Green Knight (1973)
Don't listen to the reviews that say this is very bad.
This film has to be one of the most underrated films ever. And in some ways I think this could be due to it being a British film made with a reasonably low budget...in other words a prejudice against it.
I admit it does have it's flaws such as some of the fight scenes (but not all) being a little silly, a few deviations from the plot of the poem, and the occasional line of cheesy dialogue (though on this count we there is not that much of this at all).
This film had a small budget however the filmmakers accomplish a great deal despite this. The set designs I have to say are rather good. As for the costumes, they do indeed look like 'Monty Python And The Holy Grail' costumes in some cases. There are two reasons for this that are over looked...these are the facts that Monty Python spoofed this film (aswell as others) with their film...The other fact is that the costumes are based on Medieval Costumes and so it's obvious that some will look similar.
I have seen a lot of people on this site say how bad the effects are, and I have to respectfully say that their comments are baloney on this matter. The effects are no worse than most other films of that time and genre.
Also it should be noted that this is a British film and most of the cast were fairly well known in the UK at the time, so they are only a 'No Name' cast to people abroad (not in the UK) in the USA...etc...People forget that films are always predominately made for their own countries and not generally foreign markets...and this film is the same.
Over all this is quite a good film...I will give it full marks just because everyone else are giving this film such ridiculous marks on these reviews.
Escape from Atlantis (1997)
The Worst Film Ever!
This is the worst film I have ever seen in my life...it is too crap for words, its filled with dumb Nazis and various other stupid characters and the plot is just s**t.
The worst part is when they leave the captain of the ship stuck to this wall that you can never get unstuck from, and thus leave him to die in a horrible and slow way...all this with the usual 'funny' music that they always play on scenes like this in these dumb films.
Oh, and at the end they come up from Atlantis and end up at Stonehenge which is in southern England...who comes up with this crap.
Other 'scenes' include a brand new take on 'The Deerhunter' and a whole new meaning to the word 'dumb'.
I'm not even going to give this a '1(awful)' as this seems to good for this...
This film should be placed under the dictionary definitions of 'Stupid','Crap' and 'Waste of Time'....
Seriously don't waste your time watching this heap o' garbage!
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
The Best Film To Date!
Despite the bad things you may hear about this film, it is considered the best by many Bond-fans. This is the one film in the series that truly is a close adaptation to the novel (Considered Fleming's best by many) and this was a delightful change of tact from the approach used for the previous film 'You Only Live Twice' which bears almost no similarity outside of character (and mostly their names) and setting.
Blofeld (Telly Savalas) is, of course, the villain in this one but for once doesn't want to take over the world as in most Bond-films; he wants a pardon and to be recognised as the Count D'Bleuchamps; a failure of the world's establishments to do this will mean him unleashing Vitus Omega, a virus that endangers every living creature on earth with the threat of infertility (an unlikely but interesting surmise). Bond must stop him!
Blofeld as depicted in this film is arguably the most like the literary Blofeld in an adaptation (he is, strangely, different in each book) being in relatively good shape as per the book and not being the short comic-book villain (excellently) portrayed in the previous entry, or the characture that (the fantastic actor) Charles Grey had to play in the following film. The only real difference is he is probably a bit young for book Blofeld and of course he is still bald. But the physicality of Telly Savalas (who is incidentally of Greek extraction as was the literary Blofeld who was Greek, albeit also Polish (and from Poland) in the text. He was also presumably English due to the origins of his surname. But I digress).
Now on to Bond, played by Australian actor George Lazenby; previously a model, ex-soldier and car salesman; his only previous acting experience being in Fry's chocolate commercials, although you wouldn't realize this by watching him on this. He has been criticized as being wooden and even ugly by fans of Connery who sometimes seem to be motivated by anger that he he wasn't in every bond film until Pierce Brosnan (who originally met with approval until Craig came and he too was rubbish!). His acting is quite good and contrary to popular belief at the time he was popular as Bond at the time with fans and critics. I get the impression that people only hate Lazenby because they think he was fired which isn't the case as he left due to advice he would regret.
Now he isn't anywhere near as good an actor as Connery but he is still a good bond and if he is seen to be imitating Connery that is only because he is playing the same character and he is only the first fellow to follow Connery in the franchise thus far!
To sum it all up if; you like the more intelligent bond films involving relatively intelligent espionage-plots then watch 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' or 'For Your Eyes Only', 'The Living Daylights' and 'From Russia With Love' and if you just want special effects, explosions and violence without a storyline then I suggest 'Die Another Day' would probably be the most to your liking.
