Polar (2019)
Brainless massacre
99% of the movie is brainless massacre. No elaborate characters, no real storyline. Random cartoon characters shooting targets for 1.5 hours without reason. Is it funny at least? Well, you guessed it.
It it coherent? Who the hell was the black woman with an army of guns to show up at the right moment at the right place to save him?
First I didn't understand why Duncan would rather choose his life for the girl's, even though they had literally no connection whatsoever. At the end of the movie it got clear, this was an epic plot twist, something to take away, but it doesn't make up for the whole brainless movie I've just seen.
After all, cutting out 10 second parts of deadmau5' work and mixing it up with latin music is the most unforgivable sin.
Dirty Money: Drug Short (2018)
How distant money and morals have become
A story on how the big pharma extracts your last dime while leaving you sick and undefended, on the edge of dying. Valeant's story is not unknown in the financial world, but the light this movie sheds on them elevates it to a whole new level. Out of all Dirty Money episodes, this is my favorite. It very well shows how greedy American tycoons are, and how distant have became money and morals. My only issue with this one is that the title depicts Andrew Left (one of the experts interviewed and involved in the short) too positively, while in reality there are a couple of shady cases behind Citron.
Eat the Rich: The GameStop Saga (2022)
Missed some background
Back then the short squeeze happened, I was also following this story in detail, so nothing in this movie was new to me. I still watched it with hopes that I would learn some background on the Melvin-Robinhood scandal. That didn't happen. It should've gone deeper into the so-called conspiracy theory, and I'm disappointed that the filmmakers seemingly wanted to avoid legal trouble.
But altogether, as a docu, it's well put together. The characters, atmosphere and the language is honest and reflects what I've seen on WSB back then.
Since the GME story was a unique and big one, I'd recommend this title to all retail investors who haven't heard about GameStop yet. But if you already know the story, this is a skip.
Inventing Anna (2022)
A whole day stock movie on the rich
I'm several hours into the series, and thinking about stopping midway. No real storyline, no real details, we don't know as a viewer, what part of the story is true or made up. I first laughed at this, but it's not the way to go. As a contrast, I would highlight Narcos, which is also partly a fiction, but at key peak points, there are real black-and-white films inserted, confirming the core story is very well true. And that makes shocking realizations. This does not happen with Anna.
Most of the series is just a boring depiction of rich people's lives. A stock movie. The characters are not elaborate enough, I could at least had been made to identify with the journalist, that didn't happen either. A missed shot.
Cocaine Bear (2023)
A horror comedy that's not funny and not frightening
After watching the full movie I realised that the two minutes long intro tells everything that happens. And nothing else really does happen. Visuals: could've been better, Storyline: second to none, Casting: okay-ish, Characters: not elaborate, Horror factor: basic, grade E+, Funniness: might contain some easy to digest jokes, but that's all. If this is a primarily horror movie, it should've been more frightening and unpredictable. If primarily a comedy, should've been way more funnier. It just fails at both, and I'm sad to say (maybe I had too high expectations), but this is a missed shot again.
Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (2022)
A missed shot
If Whitney was in fact this big voice, "The Voice", then she really does not deserve this shallow and boring representation of her life. I bet there are details, which could've been expressed way more movie-like fashion. Seriously, family fights, alcohol, drug abuse, and the movie became this flat? A high school storyteller could've done better. Cmon. There are already good movies on Lady Gaga and Queen, feels like they got on the money train and wanted to put this out, grab some cash and fade away. A tell you what, this will definitely fade away in the movie history. A very long YouTube music video I would quit in the middle.
The Billion Dollar Code (2021)
Falsification of history
There's nothing wrong with the film, except that it's a huge falsification of history. In reality, TerraVision used existing software that was benignly omitted from the patent, and then the filmmaker benignly omitted it from the work. Despite the fact that this was the specific point on which the lawsuit failed. What the average viewer is left with, of course, is the nasty evil Google killing everyone in its path. So, being sold based on a true story, I think that's pretty lame. You could have allowed for some missteps, but by putting all the blame on Google, it's ethically questionable. Besides, I recommend watching it anyways.
How to Become a Tyrant (2021)
Missing the wow factor
I felt like I was reading a page from my high school history book. This, especially as a movie, should've been way more interesting to watch.
Also, the series should also have dealt with the communist and post-communist China, the ancient civilisations from Egypt, Mesopotamia, Rome, Aztecs. The world does not just revolve around the 20th century. There are at least 10 other politicians / emperors I could name.
The ones who were presented with dedicated episodes were poorly explicated, the stories were missing important details, and as I mentioned above, all in all lacked the wow factor.
I liked the format, the idea, but under my expectations overall.
Better Call Saul (2015)
Painfully slow and boring start, brilliant last season
I'm giving it a 7/10 just because it starts slow and boring. For 3 seasons there's no significant connection between the two main lines. The last season compensates for a lot of that, however. Without spoilers, that's all I can say. Most characters are well elaborate, not just Jimmy. The series deserves a place in the Breaking Bad universe, but will never overcome the original one.
Don't Look Up (2021)
A very possible scenario and well put together movie
What makes this movie special, is that even if it's mere fiction for some, we're heading towards this world ruled by social indicators, influencers and hordes. Question is, will it ever get so bad, that it causes global extinction.
The movie itself has great visuals, actors, storyline, and it's pretty easy and entertaining to watch. Meanwhile, it also questions and debates the world we created.
It's also perfectly put together and marketed in a way that everyone regardless of background can draw different conclusions and still not feel attacked. Everyone has their own truth. And the title does't want to choose of these different realities.
(ps: Jenny is damn sexy)
10/10.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Well-made personas, boring finish
The core show idea was great and unique, the personas were well found out, but there are parts where it all gets boring and predictable. VIPs' acting and their speech were terrible. Episode 6 was the top of the show, with 10/10 rating if you ask me. It raised big moral questions and was the culmination point of character development. After that, hours could've been skipped, as they don't really add anything to the story.
