Yu-Gi-Oh! (2000)
Oh no!
Attack of the YuGiOh fans!
You know, every time I visit one of these review places I get stuck with all these one sided reviews of the show. No real honest input from the other side at all. Well, here is my opinion.
The characters are not really deep at all. The creator of the show has given each character some sort of tragic event or past to define them. This does not make a character deep. A deep character displays a broad range of emotions, I don't see that here.
The supporting characters just seem to be there to cheer the duelists on. That one guys sister is in the hospital, and instead of lamenting over her situation she just cheers her brother on from a distance. Yeah, thats DEEP alright. A good story paints each character with importance, no matter who they are or how often they show up. Oh, and forget the villains. Most of the villains spew insults, and then scream really loud when they don't win. Yes people, good shows have interesting antagonists too!
Kaiba makes video games for a living. WEE! Talk about tapping into every nerds fantasy. Every time I see him he's either threatening or emotionally dead. I'm so sick of people parading around like angst characters are new and original. They aren't, and never will be. Look on Live Journal, they are everywhere! Again, even downtrodden characters should display different emotions.
One of the arguments I get for the original Japanese animation is that because 4kids took out the blood and some of the dialogue that the show is immensely better in Japanese. Huh? Blood doesn't make a show deep or interesting. It is just blood. And despite all the arguments that dubbing just rips apart a show, that just isn't the case. They couldn't have changed the story THAT much. The same twists and turns are there, just in English and peppered with the occasional bad insult. They said the same thing about Dragon Ball Z, when the DBZ's real problem is that it repeats itself over and over again.
As for the plot of Yu-Gi-Oh...It takes itself way too seriously. First the characters want to save grandpa, now of course they have to save the WORLD! Using bad logic and bad mythology. The show is bent on selling itself to you. I hate shows that try to beat things into my brain, and this one wants me to buy the merchandise so MUCH. I would rather watch animation that is, you know...compelling. This show just tries to sell you things, then tries to disguise it with a characters DEEP AND TRAGIC past, or the usual "With Friends You Can Do ANYTHING" tripe. Nothing that makes a good story is here. There are no unpredictable twists, no tragedies worth caring about because unless the characters are villains there is always a way to bring the good guy back, and no breaks from this stupid card game they force in your face every single episode.
My rating: 2/10. Damn those who forced me to watch this thing, and damn those who think that a cute character makes a show good. Please! Stop supporting this tripe, and start supporting shows with soul. Just because it is meant for kids, doesn't mean it should be stupid.
Futurama (1999)
I Love This Show
When Futurama first came out I didn't really care for it. I was a bit of a prude, and I expected a more Simpsons like sense of humor. A few years later and I adore the show.
Each character is lovable yet flawed, and thats what I love about the show so much. No character is made to be superior to the average joe. The setting makes the show even better because the creators can go nuts with the plot. What I like even more is that sometimes the episodes are actually a bit sad, and this adds even more dimension to the characters.
The animation is beautiful, and has the best 3D cel-animation I've seen on TV. The future is bright, but flawed too, just like the characters. I wish Futurama had more seasons, but the episodes we were given are gold.
Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie (2004)
Uh, what?
Way to waste your time EmSee! It is completely obvious that this movie is for fans of the show only. But there is no way that it could possibly be considered a good movie.
First, the damn thing polarizes audiences. The only people who will WANT to see it are young kids and deluded anime fans. Good movies appeal to a broad range of people. Good movies will continued to be celebrated among future generations.
Secondly, I don't care about your nostalgic memories of the Transformers movie. I remember the Yogi-Bear movie from when I was a tot, but that doesn't make it a good movie. I will never forget Manos, and it will never be good.
Yu-Gi-Oh is just a marketing tool to exploit kids that are into the fad, and the various overgrown anime fans. The kids will grow out of this and forget about it, while the anime fans of low taste will never let it go because it is a masterful work of DRAMA and CREATIVITY! (I.E. Better than anything they could come up with, which isn't much)
