Arizona sur (2006)
Really boring...and then...
The previews made this film seem to be an entertaining piece of new Argentine work. Wow, was I wrong. It seems that some new Argentine directors have adopted the beginning of a movie with some bait, so you would remain hooked to the end. It is what happened to me with the El Aura of Bielinski. Lots of twists and turns for little payoff. In this film, I didn't bother, or maybe I could not stand it anymore, and left the movie after the 65 min. mark. When two clueless youngster start philosophizing, that's when my sister and I bolted from the theater. I must say that I love Argentine movies, and make it a point to watch as many as possible when in Buenos Aires. However, this must be the most boring, slow, technically inept movie I have seen in a while. Too bad, because the premise of the film had some possibilities.
Derecho de familia (2006)
So young and already spent...
Even the great cinema masters, including Bergman, Kurosawa and Fellini, reached a point where rehashing the same old stories in new containers became old and boring... Too bad that a promising young Argentine director has reached such a place in so few years. What a boring, mindless movie... What a lack of story, what a lack of feelings(and the lack of feelings was no purposefully described).. how little to say None of the characters has been developed; we can't and don't care much for anybody... maybe the best actor, or at least the one with whom we can connect is the 2 or 3 yrs old child... otherwise, the movie is fairly boring... cute in a vacuous sense. I hate to do this: not worthwhile to go to the movies... nor rent.
Deuda (2004)
The closest you can come to Argentina 2001 and its culprits
Here is a movie which in its own rights tells you a story without an ending or an answer. This is where Lanata and Michael Moore part company. However, a lot of the documentary style of Deuda seems coincidental with Moore's. From the eyes of a starving school girl to the Director of the IMF, Anne Krueger, we see a collection of individuals trying to explain that that can not be explained. Where did 180 billion dollars go? Who is responsible? the borrower or the lender? both? It doesn't matter who is responsible. The stark reality is that millions of children, whether in Argentina or other countries of Latin America or Africa, or for realism, here in the USA, are starving and dying because we do not make those responsible accountable. A great little documentary, fun, fast moving and a kick-ass soundtrack, and for a change, an Argentine movie with clear sound. If you get a chance, don't miss this jewel.
Do U Cry 4 Me Argentina? (2005)
Very Good Opera Prima
What a pleasant surprise was to see this movie at the April 2005 BAFICI, the Independent Film Festival in Buenos Aires, the first movie of Bae Yung. The life of some transplanted youth from South Korea into Buenos Aires. The racism they endure. The nasty comments about Asian people by native Argentines, who themselves are the children of other immigrants. The robberies and murders, amidst home robberies, by their countrymen. The choices some of them make, to make money, to be happy, are similar to other youth all over the world. The movie has a jumpy, fast-cut style, which could be mistaken to a collection of MTV videos.... but underneath, there is a good story, albeit tragic. Of special interest were the shots of the woman violinist, and of the woman working at his father's clothes sewing sweatshop. Good first try!!!
