Dabangg 2 (2012)
Even Salman Khan can't help this film that lacks a script
A lot of action, one liners and Salman Khan did not help this movie that lacked a script.
The positives for this film would be the action, the few comedy scenes, a few good performances and the music. The action was top notch in this film as I found the climax for this film was better than the first film. The few comedy scenes were good such as when Chulbul is prank calling his Dad and pretending to be a girl. Salman Khan, Prakash Raj and Vinod Khanna put up some great performances. Salman Khan keeps you entertained and continues with his witty one liners. Prakash Raj delivered a good performance, but his performance was better in Singham and he needed more screen time in this film. Vinod Khanna had a bigger role in this film and played his character well. Fevicol and Dagabazz Naina are the best songs in this film and they looked good on screen
The negatives for this film would be the script, the awkward romantic scenes and the music. A very poor storyline, but I didn't expect it to have a good one since its a "masala" film. The scenes with Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha are very useless. Sonakshi Sinha cannot act. She has never had a significant role in any of her films as they were only hits because of the lead actor. Dabangg, Rowdy Rathore and Son of Sadaar were hits because of Salman, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn. The other songs in this film were crap and useless in the film. The 'new' version of the title song is absolutely terrible as the original song was a 100x better than this one. Pandeyji Seeti is another terrible song which felt like it was forcefully put into the movie. The other romantic song is okay but you feel like why is it there in the first place.
Overall, with its many faults, it is a one time watch for the action, good performances by Salman and Parkash, and a few songs. 5/10 ps Its time for actors like Salman, Akshay and Ajay to stop doing these masala films and choose films with a good script that can also entertain audiences because these types of films are ruining bollywood.
Ek Tha Tiger (2012)
Good Action, everything else not so good
I didn't really want to watch this film, but a few of my friends said I should watch it so I eventually did. I was really disappointed with this film.
The story is less about spies and more about love. We see Tiger (Salman Khan), a RAW agent on a mission in the beginning of the film and it kills like 10 people and thats it for that mission. He goes to England to observe a scientist and meets Zoya (Katrina Kaif) who is an ISI agent and they both fall in love. They run away together from both RAW and ISI so they can live their lives together peacefully.
The action is top notch in this film, but the romantic scenes and the few comedy scenes aren't great at all. Salman Khan can not do romantic scenes and his dialogues are not that good compared to his other films like Wanted, Dabangg and Bodyguard. Katrina does well in her action sequences, but as usual she puts on a stale performance for all her other scenes. The Salman and Katrina on screen is very overrated as evident in this movie and from the disastrous Yuvraaj.
The songs are decent in this film. Mashallah and Lappata are the best in the film. The locations and the cinematography are excellent.
Overall, this film is only for any die hard Salman Khan fan. For others, you may or may not like it. My verdict, a disappointing 5/10
Student of the Year (2012)
Not a typical Karan Johar film, a one time watch
After watching Student of the Year, I had mixed feelings about the film.
The story is about Abhimanyu (Siddarth Malhotra) who is the new guy in school and becomes friends with Rohan (Varun Dhawan). Abhi falls in love with Rohan's girlfriend, Shanaya(Alia Bhatt). They are all competing for the Student of the Year trophy that involves an IQ test, a scavenger hunt, a dance competition and a triathlon.
It is a very predictable plot and I can't tell if this is a high school or a college. They were a blazer for their uniform and yet they go out to clubs, drink and party.
Siddarth and Varun acted well in their first film. I believe Varun was the better actor in this film. An example would be when he has a fight with his Dad about wanting to be a singer and not a businessman like him. Siddarth weakest scene was when his grandmother was dying and he started to cry. I don't think he can do emotional scenes all that well. Alia was just terrible in this film and Karan Johar should have casted somebody else for her role. She sounds like a 12 year old girl. The supporting cast did an excellent job. I found Jeet and Sudo acted very well in their roles. A big thumbs up for Rishi Kapoor who played the gay dean perfectly.
The music was a big plus point for this film. All the songs were great and were used well for this film. My personal favourite was Vele.
Overall, watch this film for Varun, Siddarth, the supporting cast and the great music. A disappointing 5/10
Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012)
A decent film, could have been better
As a SRK fan, I was really looking forward to this film after the disastrous Ra one and the decent Don 2. After watching this film, I left the theatre with mixed feelings.
The film was stretched a bit too long in the second half and it was getting boring after Samar loses his memory. The plot was a big letdown in this film as I felt that if there was a better story, this movie could has been a masterpiece.
For performances, SRK was the driving force of this film especially when he was an army officer. He acted well as the 25 year old Samar, but the fact is that SRK looks too old to be 25 and thats why I found the army role suited him more. Katrina seems to be improving with every film, but her face stills seems expressionless during the emotional scenes. Anushkha's role wasn't too big in this film. She played her character well, but she has played this type of role too many times in her previous films and its time for her to try something new.
The music was great in this film. Loved Challa, Saans and Ishq Shava as they are the best songs in the film. The dance with Katrina and SRK was one of the best moments in the film. The locations were beautiful and the cinematography was excellent. The first half was good because there was a good flow and the fact that most of the songs were in the first half. The second half could have been edited as it was stretched a bit. SRK and Katrina's kiss scenes are short, but exciting since you see SRK breaking his no kissing rule.
Overall, this movie is a one time watch for the Late Yash Chopra, SRK's performance, AR Rahman's music and the beautiful locations. 7/10
