Edward Scissorhands (1990)
One of my all-time favourites - a contemporary fairy tale
Describing Edward Scissorhands... Where shall I begin? It's only fair to start with the impact it had on me all those years ago when I first saw it.
It's one of the few films that managed to touch me in a very unique and emotional way. I had only seen the promo and trailer on television, when I became mesmerized by the astonishing world and characters Burton created for this film. I knew then I had to see it. And I knew then that I would love it. Because this is no ordinary fairy tale no, this is real magic.
Not only are the parts sublimely cast
the music is amazing and so appropriate, the set is delightful and interesting to watch, Edward's innocence and frailty is an instant sympathy factor and the budding love between him and Kim is one of rare kinds one that I was captivated by, and am still.
The film knows slow, funny, romantic and exciting scenes. All of which show us more of Edward and the life with his new 'family' outside of the professor's castle. I began falling more in love with the story and the characters, especially Edward, while watching it. My favourite scenes include the obvious 'snow dancing' scene, the funny show and tell scene and the precious 'hold me I can't' scene. But, honestly, it's hard to pick a particular scene from a film that is so dear to my heart.
How can I put it? It's a story that invites you into a different world. If only for a little while. Still one where good and evil exist, but where a bittersweet happy ending holds victory. Yes, the ending. Also a scene that completely ran away with my heart. I remember fighting my tears during the final scene especially when I saw it the first time. Of course I knew it was going to end that way, how else could it? And the fact that It did only made a bigger impression on me and made me treasure the film more. It was an honest ending. An "I love you" I will never forget. And one of which I hope there will be more in Hollywood in the years to come.
It is impressive what Johnny did in this role. There's no other word for it. Or maybe 'wow'. From that moment on he became my favourite actor. And he still is. And no matter what projects he works on in the future, I doubt that is going to change.
So, yes, when it comes down to it; I'm giving this film a 10 out of 10. Simply because I think it's that good. One of my all-time favourites - a contemporary fairy tale
V for Vendetta (2005)
'' V..'' is a great movie, also beautiful to watch
Ever since I saw the trailer for V for Vendetta I just knew I had to see it. Now that I have, I simply can't wait for it to come out on DVD. I will buy it straight away! And that is something I don't say that easily..
This film is equal in originality and beauty. The story of the mysterious hero ''V'' who tries to make the people see just who their government really is and that they should take their lives in their own hands again and his new-found accomplice Evey is highly interesting to watch. Also, you feel for all the characters right from the start. Due to the deliciously evil John Hurt, who plays the vicious high chancellor Sutler, it is without problems you will find yourself siding with the rebels in no time.
The manner in which the story is told is very intense, making sure you are right there in the middle with the characters. It's like a puzzle; pieces start falling in the right places piece by piece; filling you in on the plot when the time's right. This film also is utmost pleasant to watch because of the way it was shot. The colours (uniforms, flags, symbols and so on) and the objects hidden inside the hide-out of our hero ''V'' are amazing and the entire feeling of the story is simply breath-taking.
As much as acting is concerned; the wonderfully cast Hugo Weaving delivers a stunning and very impressive role as ''V'' and also Natalie Portman, who I have always liked on screen, shows her true talent as the young, innocent Evey who learns that sometimes you have to fight for what you believe in, no matter what. I also immensely enjoyed the sadly, brief- performance of Stephen Fry, who played Evey's boss Gordon Dietrich.
The action sequences with ''V'' are also very much worth mentioning. It is nice to see how his personal style, motivation and play on words were used to create this effect, and, very important, without looking overly dramatic.
I can honestly say even the way ''V'' and Evey felt about each other at the end of the film, left me with a bit of a chill and somewhat teary eyes. Although it was very clear they could never be together it was nice to see ''V'' had learned about the importance of hope and love in his quest for vengeance.
Therefore, I can only highly recommend this film to anyone out there. By an instant it has become one of my all-time favourites and I am sure you will enjoy this film as much as I do.
Tata, Miss V ^^
Failure to Launch (2006)
This film blew me away 4/5 stars!!
I know this might sound silly because it's 'just' a romantic comedy, but still.. the depth of the story, the timing, the way the plot evolved, the lines each of the characters had.. it had something special about it!! The acting was good, too. Which is, I feel, not always the case with films like these. The producers tend to shove the ''romance'' in your face or try to be funny at moments when it's just not appropriate. Not with Failure, I'm happy to report. ^^ Matthew is fun to watch as the thrill-seeking, (good-looking!!) from love hiding macho, with a secret you find out at the very end. And Sarah just shines in her role as professional love-superhero, with some quite good scenes, such as the paint ball game.
Also the side-characters have enough to say! Finally! I'm getting so sick of them just being there to help their best friend, the main character. But in Failure they have actual personalities and interests. Phew.. Took long enough! :) For me this is one of the best films in its genre I have ever seen. It is on the level of ''How to lose a guy in ten days'', ''Sweet Home Alabama'' and ''The Wedding Planner''.
Though the idea for this film; get the over-aged thirty something teen out of the family home by hiring an attractive woman to pose as his girlfriend, this film is not predictable in the least and has, in my opinion, much to offer; from moments you completely give in to laughter to moments where you just get wrapped up in the love story..
I saw this film with a friend of mine, and he agreed it was a very amusing and original thing to see. He told me he really enjoyed watching it, as did I. Although he is more of an action-type film fan. I really do think Failure To Launch is attractive for all people out there who want to have a good time and leave with enough good moments on screen to think and talk about at home.
I give this a pretty perfect nine because I loved it so much! For me: 4 out of 5 stars.
The Poet (2003)
The Poet is a great film! I loved it!
This is such a great film! Never mind the low rating here. I really have no idea where that came from, they must be discussing a different film then. Because I absolutely loved it and found it to be a little hidden treasure.
It's story was so original and charming.. I really can't think of anything bad to say about it. Maybe it has to be ''your type of thing'', but, I saw this with my sister and my mother, and we all were taken by it.
The acting was also very good, and that is hard to do in a film like this. But I found all the characters very intriguing and sympathetic.
I've always been very fond of Dougray Scott and found his new ''dark'' role very interesting. It is really awful hard to get me to like a bad guy, but I absolutely had no problem with that this time. Even more so, I adored him.
Everyone who loves a good thriller/drama that also has a good dose of love and tragedy should definitely go see this film, no question about that! Anyone wanting to see a film with 80% bloodshed, should go rent something else, though.. But I guess the title already kind of gives that away. This is a love story, not Saw 3.
I give this film 4 out of five stars!!! Good job!!!
xxx Enjoy!
