Message from a Mistress (2017)
Cheap
Just about everything about this movie was bad. The script with its cheap wannabe gangster slang and F bombs being throw all over the place. Poor sound, I think the mic was under the bed most of the time. Cheap sets, none of the homes inside looked like people would actually live in them. Style of "business" clothing was way too tight and for supposedly being an "executive" just made her look cheap. The story itself was lame, not only keeping the wives guessing about their husbands but the audience who had to suffer thru watching this, really? If the directors intentions is to make you want more and come back for the sequel, you are wasting your time.
It's Complicated (2009)
Laughed so hard
Since we decided not to hook up the internet when we moved this summer we have been reading and watching movies. Not ones to go to the theater either we wait until they are released on DVD's. On our recent trip to the library, I found this one in their selection. Always a fan of Meryl, and both my husband and I previously married before, thought this would be something we would both enjoy. OMG he just about fell off the couch laughing so much. Said his ribs were even sore. A truly hilarious movie. Yes you expect the main characters Jane & Jake to be good but what a surprised to see Harley - yes he just about stole the show, you almost forget the other young adults were suppose to be their children and how I wish I could have smelled all that food. You much watch this on a full stomach otherwise you are liable to raid the fridge afterward. A very grown up but seriously funny at the same time.
Hatari! (1962)
Hilarious
Forgive me but I'm not much of a John Wayne fan but I did find this movie hilarious and the young photographer steals the show. Makes me wish there was a sequel to it. I know how much work it is taking care of animals but I think 3 baby elephants would be fun to have, at least for awhile. My husband and I have 3 cats so of course we loved the scenes with the cheetah. What a beautiful animal. The guys all trying for the attention of the lady boss makes for a great side story. Always fun to see how the opposite sex reacts to each other when they have to work with each other, even more so when they have to share the same place to live for any length of time.
Living Proof (2008)
Women from all over.
I cried, but then again I cry at these types of stories anyhow. I cried not only for the Doctor and his family, for the women and their families and for myself. Like so many of these women, you don't ever expect to be the one that is told - "You have breast cancer", well I wasn't exactly told that, but they did tell me we see something on your films and want to do another. So for 2 weeks I waited to take that second test and then another week for the results. These were the longest weeks of my life. Everything stopped. I just waited until they called me at work. Not knowing what they were going to say, I was sitting with my head down and didn't say a word. Once they told me, I thanked them, hung up and sat there for a moment. I stood and turned to the ladies in my office with a cracking voice said... "everything is fine" and then burst into tears. Tears of relief, tears of joy, tears that I would continue my life as normal. They gathered round and hugged me, not realizing the weight I was carrying on my shoulders these past weeks. You never know until its you. I know some what these women have got through but not everything and I have to respect them for putting up a fight, for being brave and having the courage to go on. For their families to be supportive, understanding, and most of all loving and just being there for them. The Doctor for never giving up and knowing all along it would work, for his family sacrifice of 12 years of their lives while he worked on this.... the cure for Breast Cancer.
Apocalypto (2006)
Agreed
Makes you forget its in another language, you just get so absorbed in it. Even the brutality of it so raw and in your face. Yet still able to show you love between a man and a wife, or a mother and child; compassion - even when it involves your mother-in-law; pranks - adults never loose their sense of humor. Its a timeless piece set in an ancient world, so not only are you given a history lesson, it works in showing you that the same emotions apply in today's time. Mel Gibson did a wonderful job with the story, the actors/actresses, costumes, it all just worked together perfectly. I'm not much for watching award shows, but this one definitely deserves one.
Calendar Girls (2003)
Forty and Fabulous
I enjoyed this movie so much and instantly thought of my mother, so I bought not one copy but two and sent it off to her for her birthday. I did laugh my head off in one scene and cry in the next, it really makes you feel. Its a feel good movie even when there are sad moments and any person with a mom should share this movie with her. Give a copy to your mom for Mother's Day or any day just because. Everyday women, with everyday lives and all its ups and downs, coping with themselves, husbands, kids, friends, work and just nosy bodies in general. It may even make men look at women in a whole different way, after all as beautiful as the women's body is, they also have a brain, and most are quite capable of using it, given half a chance. We are strong and with our minds set we can and will accomplish just about anything. And that is also part of the point of this movie.
Cars (2006)
Most enjoyable.
I enjoyed this movie completely and recommend it for your family entertainment. As a kid, my folks would load up my brothers and I, head off to Colorado from California, taking the scenic route. We stopped of many tourist attractions along the way and some that were a bit out of the way too. We were not in hurry to get where we were going so we enjoyed the trip as a family. The Grand Canyon, The Colorado River, The Painted Dessert, Petrified Forrest, Four Corners, Cave Dwellings, Navajo Villages, Olde Town of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Aspen, Vail, Hover Dam, Las Vegas were all places we got to stop and spend some time in. I came across from Calif. to Florida with my kids, we however were on a time schedule, but I did stop occasionally to let them enjoy the sites. I would love to travel the back roads of our Nation with my husband and kids the whole summer long and may just do that some day.
The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
Wake up call.
For all of us that drive a car to work using fossil fuel look what we have done to mother earth, I too am guilty of this, having to commute a distance of 40 miles one way to my place of employment. Well she's mad as hell and isn't going to take it anymore. Storms have become so unpredictable and with such force its a wonder we are still here at all. Living in Huricane country we are warned and told to prepare and forth most part we do. Now we need to do that country wide for there's no telling when or where the next bad storm will hit.
Now is the time to tell your representatives in the White House....WAKE UP. Global Warming is not going to go away, things need to be done now to help limit the conditions that are forthcoming. Not just for our sakes but the generations to follow. The earth is changing at alarming rate we all need to do what we can and not just expect the next person to do it.
Shakespeare in Love (1998)
in not so many words.....
this was a whimsical way of portraying the life of Shakespeare, but i found it to be quite good. I enjoyed that the actors and Shakespeare were not "accepted" by society as we were thought to believe. like most artists, they struggled with their hardships and somehow prevailed over them. what they had to overcome to see their show completed and allowed to be shown to the general public makes it even more satisfying. I wish to have seen them in their time, to have been a part of the cast or audience would have been such a treat. the story moves along at a good pace and makes it enjoyable for all to see. i also recommend Elizabeth, with some of the same actors.
Elizabeth (1998)
What would you give up?
I tend to like "period" movies and I think this one captured, "Elizabeth" quite well. Being queen was not always living the life of the rich and famous. Like any leader there are things you would have to give up, choosing to remain unwed, was her's. Many might give up a job, house, car for the person you love, but, for the well being of her country she gave up her love, how many of us could do that today? Not only give up her love, she never really knew who she could trust and turn to for support. Living a carefree life as a child/teen and then thrust into the front as she was, she not only prevail, but also managed to make her mark in history like no-one else. England should be proud of her, and how this movie portrayed her. I think the actors did a very good job.
