Russia - A Thousand Years of History (2021)
Disobeying the laws of astronomy
How can you trust a voice over which claims that Russia is so vast that when the sun rises in the West, at the same time it's setting in the East?
Why did Fiona Shaw read that out without asking, "Hang on..."
Little Men (2016)
Not quite class warfare but class distance perhaps
This is a quite sad film about a friendship across a divide. When Greg Kinnear yells at Tony that the first rejection he will face as a would-be thespian is not getting into La Guardia, one hopes Tony will take umbrage and it will spur him on to fight harder to attain his dream. But Jake's father is actually being realistic, even though he blurts it out in anger to hurt Tony. Although Jake's grandfather could afford to be sentimental and generous towards Tony's mother, and Jake and Tony can have a beautiful bond as adolescents, in the years in between, it's a dog eat dog world and Jake gets to go to performing arts school to kick start his career, while Tony (arguably even more talented) doesn't, remaining at his parochial Catholic school. It's tragic that Jake can't find the guts or awareness or emotional wherewithal to cross the museum floor and reconnect with Tony.
For Better, for Worse (1954)
Did Neil Simon ever see this?
If you've ever seen Barefoot in the Park you'll recognise the similarities and rejoice at how much better it is.
