Dune (2021)
9/10
How I finally came to appreciate Dune: Part One (a suggested viewing guide, rather than a full review)
21 March 2022
I saw Dune Part One in cinemas on the day of its release. Sadly I didn't get an opportunity to see it in IMAX, so I went to a for 4DX session instead (never again). I was super excited about seeing a sci-fi film that takes the genre seriously. The first impression was "I think I liked it... did I???". 2.5 hours did feel a bit excessive. I bought the UHD release when it come out months later. I've watched it a few times since and found the only way I could digest everything thoroughly was by watching Dune Part One in three distinct segments which I watched on separate days.

1 - Start of film up to Dr Kynes making an appearance.

2 - Dr Kynes first appearance to her last appearance in this film.

3 - The rest of the film.

Breaking it into mini-episodes really helped me keep focused on details which were easily missed, particularly in the script. Every viewing of Dune gets better and better for me - to the point where I now consider this film a masterpiece.

Having said all this, of course a portion of audiences who saw Dune: Part One once may have decided "never again". That is fair and understandable. It's a very specific genre of film with numerous concepts and themes, which at the end of the day won't be to everyone's taste. If you feel any urge to revisit Dune but struggled with it before, I think the relentless 2.5 hours of the film may be part of the issue.

Yes, I am well acquainted with David Lynch's version of the film, but I don't think its fair to compare these films as they present the same story and characters in a starkly different way. (No, I don't love the 1984 version, though I do find the Mother Superior's receding hairline fascinating).

Budget soundtrack for a quality movie.
28 December 2020
The quality of this tele-movie was very high and well-acted. The only downfall I felt that made if feel like a tele-movie rather than something worthy of a cinema release was the soundtrack which sounded very much like someone through it together in one night for a low budget TV series like EastEnders or Cell Block H. I appreciate that might sound like a petty criticism, I still strongly recommend this movie, but if there was just some minor editing adjustments and a completely new soundtrack, it then could comfortably would have been at least a 9 star rating from me.
