Ms. Marvel (2022)
They tried, but missed the mark.
Firstly, I don't agree with people who keep using the excuse of "this show isn't made for your demographic". There are plenty of movies "not made for my demographic" that I absolutely enjoy.
The first 2 episodes were boring. Took a 2 year break after those and decided to continue with the rest of the episodes when "The Marvels" was recommended to me.
Overall, I do like the style they went for with the tv show. It's different, refreshing and fun. The actors did an amazing job bringing the characters to life.
The series had heart. Some scenes made the show more bearable to watch. I feel that the show could have done so much better with the conflict scenes.
The "Clandestine", "Damage Control" and "Red Daggers" fight/action scenes are very poorly written. They all seem so weak and inexperienced in their decision making. (wasting time during a fight, etc)
"Red Daggers" are supposed to be a 'secret group', yet they have a glass roof for easy access (enter Clandestine) and remove their masks so often, even though there isn't a need to. It's like they don't take their identity seriously.
Special effects could have been a lot better, the final fight was especially painful to watch.
We ended the series still not knowing much about Ms Marvel's powers, or the Clandestine. I understand that it was a short series, so maybe they planned to expand more in the future...
Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Decent
All opinions are my own.
A decent remake. Locations are absolutely gorgeous and I love that they showed more of the main characters' backstories...though I feel that Belle's was poorly placed since during her time as a "prisoner", she should have been wanting to see her father, not her birthplace. They could have added it near the end as a conclusion. (Though yes it will make it end on a sad note.) Definitely very obvious that Disney tried to push 'diversity' in this movie. Yes, it's a fictional world. But they don't treat all their movies the same.
Most of their budget seems to have gone to the cast or the architecture of the castle/village. The beast and wolves do not look good, especially for a movie in 2017. And that yellow gown...Seemed like they tried to copy that same magic from the Cinderella live action, and failed. It just looks so underwhelming..must be the sleeves...Same with the red robe actually, it looks cheap.
Secret Invasion: Promises (2023)
Hopefully not downhill from here
The show seemed to have started off with a promising first episode. However, the writing for the second episode was really lacking. Poor storyline, so many characters but we don't really go in depth into each one.
- Standard 'we are taking over the world' story with weak characters. I get that this is the second episode so they are still trying to build the plot. Hopefully it gets better as the series progresses.
- More "race related" conversations that seem so forced (standard phase 4 marvel agendas we are all familiar with by now). That entire train sequence was so unnecessary. The only portion that added value was the part where they mentioned that (paraphrasing here)"humans can't get along with each other, much less with another species".
- Characters that are supposed to be the 'ex-top director of a world wide organisation' looking at u fury behaving like they are in a kindergarten sandbox...Rhodes should know better than to blame Fury for something entirely out of his control. Marvel needs to stop downplaying what their heroes do. (Hulk and Ant Man got similar treatments recently)
Did not enjoy the cheap violence done for shock value as opposed to the gun shot scene at the end..but I guess that was the point of those scenes.
Sonya...really do not like her. Valentina Fontaine's annoying 2.0 character.
Locations are really nice tho.
I WeirDO (2020)
Could be better.
A mostly artsy film. I enjoyed the first half of the film. Getting a little insight into how people with OCD live their lives. 2nd half of the film ended up being a "typical dysfunctional breakup" storyline where one party drifts away and cheats. They added a little horror-ish section near the end which was quite jarring since the rest of the film seemed more lighthearted and comedic. Would have liked if the movie took the characters through having "OCD" as their personality (which is what happened in the first half) to living *with* OCD in the second half while dealing with their relationship issues.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
just bad
She-Hulk is a show about a woman and her dating life...oh and she's also a hulk...and also a really unprofessional lawyer...going through the worst parts of living in America. (or she seems to be checking all the boxes) The show tries to talk about 'important'/'serious' topics but it always feels forced. Especially when some parts of the writing are so bad at times. They try to talk about misogyny issues, but they do it in a misandrist manner. Double standards and (inappropriate) jokes done in such bad taste. I can't tell if it's meant to be that way, to be a 'comedy'. First 2 episodes were decent enough but it just got worse and worse from there, especially from episode 6.
Star Trek Beyond (2016)
Outstanding film!
No words can describe how amazing this film is! The prologue was a heartfelt sequence that gives us insight into Kirk's thoughts on the long span of time they were in space on their mission. The first part of the movie was an intense action sequence. Really heartbreaking to see the USS Enterprise being torn apart in that fashion. The movie was quite unpredictable and kept us on the edge of our seats. I would say, compared to the first 2 films, this film had no super impactful emotional scene. (that made me tear up) Probably because the scenes were too intense for tears to come out after that. The film ended with a lovely tribute to the old Star trek crew, Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin. The Star Trek films just keep getting better and better! Not going to spoil too much, so just go watch this in cinemas!
Allegiant (2016)
Disappointing
I really wanted to love this movie, but it was downright disappointing. If you haven't read the books, I'm sure you will enjoy this movie more. The director basically changed the whole storyline. I expected changes, but not this much. They took away many scenes from the book and added many others that were not. Im glad he will not be directing the final movie "Ascendant". "Allegiant" has good action sequences, most of which did not happen in the book. For example, the scene where they left the city and were being chased by Edgar, the scene where Tobias was in the aircraft and assumed he was heading back to the city, the scene where Tobias was being trained by Nita etc. One big action sequence they could have left in the movie, was the one where Nita tried breaking in to get something and Uriah got severely injured. There were lots of humor throughout thanks to what they added to Peter's character. (Peter was not meant to be the 'funny guy' in the book) They could have left in scenes like Zeke and Tobias breaking Caleb out of prison. Tobias and Zeke had some interesting dialogue in that scene. (in the book) Also the exchange between Tobias and Peter. I feel that in the movie, his (Tobias) character was really boring. Characters like Matthew and Nita were extremely different from the books. In the movie, Matthew is this secretary type character and Nita became a "soldier". Peter also turned good in the book, not helping David as shown in the movie. The director also changed the verdict for Marcus, Marcus was supposed to be banished, not get his memories erased. The whole GD and GP situation was also not as secretive as they portrayed it in the movie. The movie also exaggerated lots of things. They pushed 'futuristic' too far and some things were a little weird, like the protective bubble thing and the liquid that Tris was suffocated by in the shower. In the book, the bureau was not that futuristic and they didn't use aircraft that often. Wish they kept the water and stone sculpture too. I found it interesting that when Tris was wearing the white dress with heels, she reminded me of Jeanine. Overall, I would rate this movie 6/10. For goodness sakes, if you are making a movie based on a book, FOLLOW THE BOOK!
Mei ren yu (2016)
Better than I expected
Nice movie, better than I expected. The film's main message is about saving the environment. Scenes can be quite disturbing as they show real life footage of marine animals like dolphins being caught, sea birds covered in oil and the attack on the merpeople... There was lots of comedic moments throughout the film as expected. Special effects were obviously not as realistic as Hollywood films. Movie storyline started off light-hearted then gradually become grim. Shows how greed can destroy our world. Last few scenes made me cry. Love the way they portrayed the relationship between the mermaid and the guy. 7/10 stars. Several inappropriate scenes not suitable for children.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 (2015)
Perfect ending to the whole series
The "Hunger Games" films just keeps getting better and better. Mockingjay part 2 is the greatest movie out of the other three. They followed almost 95% of what happened in the book. We were constantly being shocked with death or emotional scenes throughout. This is the only movie where i was tearing up every few scenes. Even at the last scene of the film, they did not stop making us feel for the characters. Everything felt so real. The cinematography was on point too. The ending in the book was too abrupt, but it worked great as the final movie scene. Would pay to watch this over and over in cinemas.Perfect ending to the Hunger Games series. Really recommend this movie.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)
SO much better than the first movie!!
SPOILERS* I felt that the scene when Katniss gets taken out of the Arena by the claw was too dragged out. Whereas scenes like the reading of the card & choosing weapons at cornucopia could have been longer. several things I don't like : waited too long to switch on their outfit during the tribute parade, Katniss didn't wear dresses during the Victory Tour, scenes where Gale and Cinna being beaten were not that impactful, the blood rain didn't soak the tributes in blood, Jabberjay scene could have been more intense, Katniss immediately knew it was a spile, they only got ONE parachute and her black mockingjay dress was a bit plain. Loved that the acting was really believable especially at the last scene when Katniss stares into the camera. there were some funny scenes and exchanges between characters. at the end of the movie, everyone in the cinema immediately started talking, a reaction i never saw before. i think that people who have read the books and feel attached to the characters would understand better what each character is going through and feel more for them. Terrific movie overall and 10000 better than the first movie, The Hunger Games. GO WATCH!
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
so far so good
DOS was good! I just don't get why the relationship between Tauriel and Kili had to be added. Do not think it was necessary to have Kili injured- the director probably wanted some dwarfs to start trusting elves again? still, I rather Peter Jackson didn't change the storyline of the movie because of a character that was originally NOT in the book.(Tauriel)Instead of having the scenes with Tauriel and Kili in Laketown, he could have used that time to elaborate on the spider scene, elves dancing scene or dragon scene. Wish that the scene with Beorn was like the one in the book though, not suspicious enough of strangers in his house i think. still, can't wait for the last movie!
