Amachan (2013)
Funny at first but gets dull and boring
"Amachan" tells the teenager Aki's challenges as she grow. Actually it is pretty well known story but it has a fresh element to it at the beginning because Aki want to become something that I even did not now that is existed: an Amasan. The different setting which is in a rural northern area of Japan, this interesting profession and usually predictable but funny lines made the show enjoyable until around 40th episode.
Even before that I had lots to tolerate though: cliché screenplay, bad acting and obviously didactic conversations. Cliché screenplay was the easiest to tolerate because there are not too many shows that are not cliché anyways. Also as I said the show had some interesting elements like setting and culture. Bad acting is the harsh reality in Japanese TV series and this show is no exception. Most of the young actors, including the main ones, are just annoying. There were just a few exceptions like the veteran actor who played the grandmother. Still, they did not have the most of the parts anyway. And lastly, the show was obviously giving us the viewers advice in many of the episodes as the children's books do. I would rather a little bit of subtlety.
After around the 40th episode the script just goes stupid and slow. The cues becomes ridiculously obvious. So, when I watch an episode I don't even need my imagination to guess what will happen in the next one.
Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (2012)
Good show but not funny
It is a good show but not funny. It is a casual conversation with famous people, so even though there are lots of comedians in some episodes I do not even smile. It is not like other shows which usually are like interviews but a normal and sometimes boring conversations with once a while nice surprises. I think it is best to chose an episode which involves your favorite famous person and watch that episode to recognize that person like regular person not like a celebrity. I am also not a fan of cars so I just skip that part. Also I do not understand that weird cuts to filling coffee to cups lots of times. OK, I saw it! So in conclusion it is a fine but boring work with rare brilliant moments.
Ekümenopolis: Ucu olmayan sehir (2011)
To see the transformation of Istanbul from the perspective of the movie-makers
Even though the documentary Ecumenopolis gets over-dramatic time to time it successfully and correctly presents us how Istanbul changed over time and what changed it in what direction. They make very good points on how the city is demolished/reconstructed and whom were effected.
The documentary basically shows how government executives in Turkey became tools of making money from construction under the name of beautifying and improving Istanbul while actually destroying the city's atmosphere, victimizing poor people and ignoring possible future results of their doings.
The documentary aims to cause at the least a concern over the issue and in order to do that it takes a anti-governmental and anti-capitalist stance which I find very courageous and right. Because while as a person living in Turkey, I saw all those advertisements and government's defending of these city transformation projects and new constructions, I had not realized the significant unfairness towards the people and environment. While I am still skeptic over the issue, the movie makers successfully presents their perspective on this problematic matter.
So, in general 'Ecumenopolis' is informing us and giving its perspective over the issue without boring us.
Wei ai zhi jian ru jia jing (2014)
A different movie experience
At first I suspected whether or not this was a serious movie. It was different and somewhat ludicrous. Maybe it was just for comedy but no. It is not. It is more than a comedy. It gives chills at the moments of realization.
Acting at the beginning seemed somewhat ridiculous but later I appreciated it. It is suitable for the style of the move even though time to time I saw bad acting too.
The movie is quite striking when you realize it represent something bigger than itself. We see one of the world's most densely populated cities: Beijing. In Beijing we focus on 'three dreamers' among millions of other dreamers. They come close to realize their dreams and at the end they were promised money and fame. They thought everything was going to be better. They work hard and they hoped for the better. Artistic features were not these three dreamers priority over money from the beginning but even their flexibility on their artistic values –if there is any- would be tested. Obviously they were doing all these for money. While the promised money amount is increased the restraints and requirements also increased. As a last nail, while the promised money was at its peak, they were required to revise the script again and to afford the requirements they were to make ridiculous changes on the script. At this point even the writer was had revolting feelings. But still they had no principles when it comes to money. They accepted to do the revisions even though it was ridiculous and humiliating. While they were working hard on the script the protagonist learns he and his actor friend was out of the project. This reminds us, in the world that we live in people and their dreams are insignificant. Their hopes and their hard work are also insignificant. These three dreamers were ultimately just tools for making or bringing money. But now two of them were out. They were one of the millions of people who had dreams. Now they are in this crowd again.
The sceneries chosen –the big scary buildings, the Beijing traffic- give the idea of crowded city even though our focus on just three tiny people.
While the movie contains this kind of serious matters it always mock itself by suddenly moving into unlikely things which brings a smile on your face. One second the protagonist very romantically confesses to the girl –under the disguise of reading the script- and then after the actor turns into a werewolf. That's why I can say that movie successfully over comes the challenge of containing some serious matters and also in overall being fun.
After the friend of the scriptwriter, the actor one, finds money for them to freely write and play. The atmosphere suddenly changes. The whole movie becomes happier. We see sunny weathers, light colors and a lot of happy smiles.
In this vast city and among this mass people the protagonist has very few who are dear to him. But at the end no one is around him. Some are willingly leave the writer some cannot help the situation and have to leave. Maybe just one dog still stays with him.
In summary, 'Love on the Cloud' is a unique movie that storms up your feelings. The movie has so many sweet nuances, watch it and see it for yourself!
1 rittoru no namida (2005)
"One Litre of Tears" quite mediocre in terms of acting and story.
"One Litre of Tears" quite mediocre in terms of acting and story. Acting is obviously fake and annoyingly predictable. The story itself based on a real life but it is not added any artistic feature on it and beyond that the show is unrealistic –yes, even if it is based on reality-. For example, Aya's doctor comes to the girl's house to talk with the family rather than calling them to come to his office. This is simply ridiculous and these kinds of events throughout the show damage its compelling elements. We mostly see the events from perspective of the family and the protagonist Aya. So, actually the series should be very sad. But I do not feel sad at all because the show is too fake in terms of both acting and the story.
I am at 4th episode of the show but I do not think I will finish all of the episodes or even if I finish the episodes, it will not be a delightful process. Editing is very weak and I feel like my time is wasted while watching the show. There are many unnecessarily long or awkwardly ended scenes. In general the show does not give a professional feeling. The show does not offer any interesting or innovative content. The story in terms of its describing family structures quiet vexing and cliché. One side we have relatively poor family but the members of this family are having fun and in general they seem happier. On the other side we have this socioeconomically upper class family that is cold, strict and the parents trying to impose their ideas on their only son.
I honestly find boring that the 'angel of the house' Aya is the one who caught up a terrible illness. She is this inspirational good natured and strong willed student in the class. Come on, how many times we have seen that. The predictability of the show might have been forgivable if it had any good acting and some power to make people feel things.
