The Last Lear (2007)
One of the most beautifully made art film.
The Last Lear perhaps is one of the most beautifully made art film that I have seen. The USP of this film was the rare combination of Amitabh Bachchan and director Rituparno Ghosh. Both are masters of their field.Amitabh Bachchan is the ultimate hero in Bollywood while no one can be better than Rituparno Ghosh in direction.
For me,being an ardent movie lover, this combination was the biggest reason to see this film. But I was highly impressed to see the efforts of the other actors like Preity Zinta,Arjun Rampal and the very talented Shefali Shah..Arjun Rampal and Preity Zinta also my favorites have outdone themselves and have proved they too can be brilliant in acting.Hats off to Rituparno Ghosh for taking the best out of his stars in this film. The last lear perhaps is the most well made art film I have seen.
Mithya (2008)
Watch it to explore Ranvir Shorey's talent.
Mithya is a completely different film from what we see today.Hats off to Planman Motion pictures and the director for taking the risk and coming out with a subject so different. I don't think any of the star casts in the film failed to deliver. But for me it was Ranvir Shorey who is simply too good in his role throughout. In his recent film I M 24,Ranvir who plays one of the lead role, is as good as he was in Mithya.Mithya is his film.He is a very good comic actor who does not get his dues or does not even get many opportunities. But he grabbed the opportunity and proved that Bollywood has much more talent than it actually thinks. Apart from Ranvir,Naseeruddin with a brief role was good and entertaining as well.Music was not on top but yes they are good to listen to.Mithya over all is a good film that must be watched to see Ranvir is capable of.
Dosar (2006)
Best I have seen from Ghosh
The storyline of the movie seems simple but what sets it apart is the treatment and screenplay. The attempt to capture a 21st century setting in black and white film is definitely a bold step - a positive risk taken by both the director and the producer - Planman Motion Pictures. This textural treatment also enables the wonderful interplay of light and shade and highlights the grey shades of all human relations and emotions. Ghosh leaves a lot to our own interpretation. He shoots his characters in tight close-ups, exposing them to our scrutiny, but doesn't pass any value judgments himself. And that I think is the greatest triumph of this brilliant film—the best I have seen from Ghosh.
Rok Sako To Rok Lo (2004)
Movie with a lesson for the youth
RSTRL is different from other movies because it's not just a love story- the movie is more about action, love and goals. Even when you feel it is a losing battle, you can still come out a winner with enough heart and hard, hard, work. Arindam Chaudhuri is the writer, director and producer of the film and as a debut director,he has dome a very good job.His selection of the star cast, most of who are new comers is simply amazing.Besides all new faces,we also have Sunny Deol in the film who has a short but very important role to play. I find this film totally entertaining more so because it is for boys of my age for whom these type of movies are specially targeted at. This is a really good movie that has lessons for today's youth. RSTRL is a heart warming family drama.
Do Dooni Chaar (2010)
Small budget movie but a great and excellent concept.
Do Dooni Char is one small episode portraying a middle-class Delhi family struggling through their financial limitations. It is a humorous and enjoyable movie throughout but is more impressive for its authenticity and realistic feel more than the story itself. The story is where this exceptionally good film scores. The spirit of Delhi and its middle-class families ha been wonderfully captured. The casts, sets and the costumes are all very simple and thus create an enchanting sense of everyday realism which is very missing in Hindi films. The film has its moments and it actually deals with problems not usually dealt with in Indian movies, such as the modest salaries professional teachers get paid for their efforts and how this affects their life. The pairing of Neetu and Rishi Kapoor adds to the advantage of the movie and makes it much more better. Its great to see both of them on screen together after decades. The story deals with the life of Santosh Duggal, played by Rishi Kapoor. He is forced to use a scooter and at some point this starts saddening him and his family. The movie is also about the dream of the family to own a car.A lovely way of conveying a concept, and it is generally well done. The biggest plus point is the casting, particularly of Rishi Kapoor, who delivers an excellent performance. Neetu Singh is very good, especially considering the fact that she had not acted for decades. Do Dooni Chaar is a great film that relates to the life of many Indian middle class families and reminds of our childhood days.A real entertainer for me.
I Am 24 (2010)
Decent comedy
Saurabh Shukla's I M 24 is about a man who is 42 but lies through his white teeth that he is a 24-year-old. He is a balding, righteous, aspiring screenwriter Shubendu Roy played by Rajat Kapoor, who lives with his friend, struggling actor Gagandeep Mishra by Ranvir Shorey. If Shubendu is like an outdated DOS computer, Gagan is like a China-made fake iPad. Gagan's world is built on the foundation of dishonesty, whereas Shubendu Roy's doesn't have a world because he isn't willing to climb the ladder of success with the help of lies. But one dark, depressing and lonely night the shy writer virtually bumps into a young girl through a random chat. And Roy's aversion to dishonesty is thrown out of the window, he starts lying, completely guided and supported by his room mate. Suddenly the aspiring screenwriter's life is filled with happy and bright colors; all because of the magic of lying. He has a well-paying writing job, a beautiful friend in Delhi he is in love with, and Gagan's lifestyle also changes for good. The two men are not alone in the madness, they have company of interesting characters like Gagan's lady love Sheela Nair(Neha Dhupia), successful producer/director Nayan Sidhwani(Saurabh Shukla) and his partner Suzy (Lilette Dubey), part-time waiter full-time actor Vijay Raaz and receptionist Mona (Delnaz Paul) in the plot. So the premise of I M 24 is clearly of a man who doesn't like to lie, but life leaves him no choice. Don't they say Love ke liye kuch bhi karega! That's what Shubendu begins to think.Rajat Kapoor and Delnaz Paul have done a commendable job.Ultimately truth triumphs in the end and for the rest go watch the movie!Ranvir Shorey's fine acting skills manages to create a comical chemistry that he shares with Vinay Pathak, with Rajat.
