Everything's Gonna Be Okay (2020)
This got me from the beginning, and won't let go!
Is it me or was it Thomas' intention to have Genevieve, Matilda, and Alex be the best things about this show?
Much of the show focuses on his attempting to parent his two teenage half sisters after the death of their Dad. A lot of it is on the mark, showing both his cluelessness (letting his autistic 17 year old sister get drunk and subsequent spiral) and sheer ingenuity (dealing with a close call drug overdose with his 14 year old sister and her friends)
I find myself however focusing on the lives of his sisters and his relationship with Alex, all of which have such a feel of real, I find myself waiting for the next episode. Its really good.
October Faction (2020)
Not Hemlock Grove or Stranger Things, but highly entertaining. Give it a try.
Netflix has come out with some really good Horror/Drama series. Hemlock Grove, Stranger Things, and Sabrina the teenage witch among them. While October Faction doesn't have the diversity of stories of Hemlock Grove, and the writing isn't as complex, its a solid addition to Netflix's Horror/Drama queue.
I almost passed this series up due to the reviews on this page. I decided to take a look anyway and was pleasantly surprised. Though I think I get now why all the bad reviews, which kind of remind me of many reviews of the Star Wars Sequels.
The acting is a bit uneven, but the characters have the decent development one would expect from this level of effort. Production values are good.
Give it a try on a lazy weekend.
Stigmata (1999)
Beyond the unevenness, a beautifully done film
Okay, so I have to say at the outset, the plot/story line, the director's cut ending (available on DVD), and Patricia Arquette are what make this film above average and if I may say, compelling.
The writing is uneven. Good for the intelligence it brings to the subject (albeit in Hollywood style) and bad for the absolute ridiculousness in the situations that happen to Frankie everyone dismisses. The character development (outside that of Frankie and her relationship with Father Kiernan (played by the awesome Gabriel Byrne, playing a priest who struggles with his secular mission) ) is almost nonexistent.
Frankie is a beautiful, secular, young woman living a young woman's life with work, friends and fun. Her life turns around with the dual ecclesiastical afflictions of stigmata, and possession. That these are dual afflictions are only delineated in the Director's cut release ending. The main release keeps the two situations as intertwined.
Arquette is amazing in the film and Wainwrights direction deserves a bit of a nod.
As I state earlier the director's cut delineates the afflictions by showing Frankie escaping one but not the other, vs the mainstream release that show's her escaping both afflictions.
Get the director's cut. It is the better of the two cuts.
Erufen rîto (2004)
Beautiful. Powerful. Moving. Not hyperbole, one of the best anime out there.
I have passed over Elfen Lied for years on Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll, etc. as I didn't think it fit my taste. I don't think I have been more disappointed in misjudging an anime by a short description.
There are many reviews that have dissected the story, so I won't go there. I will just say the complexity of this story, and the very complex interrelationships in the anime alone merit a view.
It is quite gory, so children should not be allowed to view.
Anatomy of a Love Seen (2014)
If this doesn't get a tear out of you, nothing will...
I wish I could express like others before, what an amazing film this is. I don't think I've been so happily drawn into the maelstrom of another's love relationship since "Blue is the warmest color".
This story of Zoe and Mal is unstructured, raw, and very real. Writer, and Director Marina Rice Bader (who also stars as director of a fictional scene re-shooting) creates an amazing story. Eliciting in my opinion, award worthy performances from Sharon Hinnendael and Jill Evyn.
While I can see where some may despair over a perceived lack of plot. I see this film however, as an exquisite exposition of the love between two people.
Into Temptation (2009)
Disturbing, Engaging and Brilliantly written...
The only thing not well done in this awesome little film by Patrick Coyle is a sense of urgency in the Priest's (Introspectively played by Jeremy Sisto) pursuit of a troubled call girl (brilliantly played by Kristin Chenoweth) wishing to take her life but seeking absolution beforehand.
Much of the film focuses on the Priest's history, his day to day and his pursuit of the call girl who confesses that she will kill herself on her birthday. We learn a lot about what he does and bit about who he is as a person.
What makes this a really good film is how little we get to see of the Call girl's life. What little we do see however, gives us so much into why she is so angry, so sad, and why she so desperately needs absolution for what she sees as the only way out of her misery.
While I had flashbacks to Stigmata without the supernatural elements, and vastly better written, the sadness hit me all the same. A definite must see.
