Tyrannosaur (2011)
Genuinely don't get why this isn't 100%
This isn't an easy film. Stuck at home on Covid-19 lockdown, I decided to watch all my favourite films. This was top 10. Watched it again and realised I was wrong. It's my number 1. The lead role by Peter Mullan was the greatest acting performance I've seen - just stunning. Coleman isn't far behind. This film is shocking and utterly brilliant. Eddie Marsan is only on screen about 6 or 7 minutes and my lord, I hate the man with every fibre.
Dumbo (2019)
Took me about 4 sittings to get through it
After a promising first half hour, this lacks any of the warmth of the Disney original as some bizarre and baffling side-stories completely detract from main story - you know, about the flying elephant and all that.
Us (2019)
Stop with the over-analysis!
Lots of reviews on here pointing out plot holes. It's a horror film, and much more in the classic horror genre than the director's "Get Out". Horror films have plot holes. They're implausible, hence the ability to reanimate dead bodies, have potentially fatal injuries shaken off (and in the case of the husband here, a pretty minor dead leg seem like a mortal wound!) and have unexplained sub-texts that exist only to set up the pay off. The question when rating a horror film is was it enjoyable (yes), was it well acted (you simply won't get a better actress than Lupita Nyong'o in a horror film ..... ever) and did it deliver on the shock, suspense, gore etc (sort of.... not just after-timing here but I guessed the ending about a third of the way theough), and that ruined the main set up for me). But it was brilliantly shot and directed, had a few little nods to Get Out, and compelled me to shoo the family out of the room and watch it uninterrupted. Good entertainment!
Great Canal Journeys (2014)
Anatomy of a marriage
This programme is ostensibly a travelogue about canal and river journeys on barges, riverboats and other small craft.
But that's not why we watch it, I don't think. Two of the great British character actors of a former generation, they are two personalities redolent of our childhoods.
And they have a truly special relationship to which most can only aspire. GCJ charts their journey into an old age beset by Pru's failing health.
It's a true love story, and one of the most heartwarming programmes I've ever watched.
Den skyldige (2018)
How long was the film?
Seriously. How long? Was it 30 minutes, 4 hours? Was so totally gripped throughout that I barely breathed properly until it finished. Stunning piece of acting, and directing. Highly recommended.
Black Mirror: Smithereens (2019)
The real message here....
......is that in Andrew Scott we truly have one of the best young actors the UK has produced in the last 30 or 40 years. The story has drama but most of the supporting cast were a bit clichéd. But Scott was, as ever, utterly captivating.
Dead of Night (1945)
Childhood nightmares
This is an initial short review. I saw this film aged about 10. It scared the life out of me, made me scared of mirrors and memories of it remain with me over 40 years later. That has got to be the sign of a film that hit the mark!
I will edit the review when I find a stream to download and watch and see if it still resonates. Can't wait.
Sharp Objects (2018)
Don't tell momma
Brilliantly acted. Amy Adams is a cut above almost any actor around and she should mop up awards for this.
It is slow, and whilst I like a suspenseful thriller and deep, flawed characters, the pace was leaning me towards a 7 or 8, but the final two episodes were exceptional and the twist at the end - wow! A masterpiece of writing.
PS Don't switch off before watching the end credits.
