Power Rangers (2017)
Breath of new life in a classic franchise
A thoroughly enjoyable re-imagining of the classic cheesy power rangers. Rather than rely entirely on dusty nostalgia for its appeal, 2017's Power Rangers brings the franchise into a new era, for a new generation of young people to enjoy. The inclusion of several difficult themes, such as unhealthy home life & familial relationships, single-parent homes, and parental illness, is a bold statement that sends the message "you can be a hero no matter where you come from".
Outstanding even above the film's portrayal of difficult home life and the difficulty of the teenage years is the film's portrayal of Billy Cranston, a young man with autism. His autism is directly addressed and is never shown as a weakness or a fault - indeed, Billy is the uniting force that pulls the team together on multiple occasions throughout the film. For a major Hollywood film, with such a cherished history, to show an openly neurodivergent character and not portray him in a negative light, is a dramatic and bold move on the part of the filmmakers - and one that is extremely welcome in a world where neurodivergence is treated like a dirty word.
With a cast of well-acted and well-written characters, tremendous CGI, and just enough references to the original series and films sprinkled in, 2017's Power Rangers is a fantastically fun and often emotionally stirring film. I eagerly await the future of this reboot franchise.
Thomas and the Magic Railroad (2000)
Flawless
This film was seriously one of my favourite films as a child. I'm extremely tempted to torrent it just for the nostalgia value. It's legendary. Better than any Thomas the Tank film before or since. It's Thomas the mother-flipping Tank, people. If you're reading this review, stop reading it and go and watch this film. As for the rest of this review, I just need to enter another 5 or so lines of text, so I might as well write about my day. I woke up, watched Tintin (the original cartoon, not the film), had a bath, and right about now I'm watching Miracle on 34th Street and needing something to eat. And I still need another line? Well, okay. I think that's about right.
Butt-Ugly Martians (2001)
This show is pure nostalgia.
A fantastically fun, silly show, nothing but nostalgia for me and I love it for that. It doesn't take itself seriously, and the animation - even though it's pretty primitive CGI - fits the silly attitude. People seem to take this show far too seriously and give it negative reviews all the time, but in my opinion that's totally uncalled for. It's a fun, silly show, not exactly the sort that'll be remembered for years to come, but is still enjoyable to me and most likely to others who were young when this show came out. I have no idea who Robert Stack is or was, or why people are so angry and worked up over the fact that this was his last acting role. As far as I'm concerned, this is just a silly CGI cartoon designed to amuse, cringe- worthy acting and all.
And Angela's ass is legendary.
