Apollo 11 (2019)
I never give anything a 10, this is a 10
There are no adjectives to describe this documentary adequately. I'll just say that this is the definitive film of the Apollo 11 mission. There is so much that left me agape: footage I had never seen before, tidbits of information that were fresh, not to mention the stunning remaster of the film sourced from the 1960s, as well as the painstaking and meticulous sound re-sync from mission control. A stunning achievement in documentary filmmaking indeed. Try to see it on the largest screen possible, and try to keep your heart rate lower than the astronauts as they lift off from the Earth! This film is a perfect 10.
Spaceship Earth (2020)
Solid, fascinating
Well-constructed film about something I only vaguely remembered from the 90s. The breadth of the archive footage is astounding and provides the context for what becomes a very public failed experiment. Fantastic new interview frames, an intriguing subject, and a great score from the Arcade Fire's Owen Pallett as well! 8/10.
Yasuke (2021)
Be sure to watch in Japanese
This is a pretty MOR anime, but the soundtrack is incredible. I watched about two minutes in English and was relieved to be able to switch to Japanese. For some reason, every anime just sounds much much better in Japanese and so I found it easier to parse the deliberate anachronisms and tried-and-true anime tropes. I did find the lead character quite likeable. I definitely consumed the album soundtrack a number of times on Spotify before watching. Perhaps that led me to like the film more, as the music connected me first, then the visuals and story. Now I'm going to watch Princess Mononoke.
Cosmopolis (2012)
rubbish rubbish rubbish rubbish
David, Videodrome was a very long time ago!
Dialog: terrible / unbelievable / pretentious
Narrative: unclear / not present
Performances: Giamatti pretty good / all others, terrible / Pattinson: did you read this script before agreeing to the part? Juliet Binoche + Samatha Morton, why are you in this movie? Your parts are terrible! There is no way you can perform well with such lousy poetry.
Sex scene(s): both scenes awkward and terrible (and I really enjoyed Crash)
Visual FX: pretty good actually
Ending: what ending?
