Joker (2019)
Without Joaquin Phoenix's performance there would be no purpose to this
This movie is dark, very dark. That would be okay if it had something to say, something about life to illuminate. But this doesn't. It's just dark. Okay, I can slightly feel for Joachim Phoenix's character -- but his story is not real so I am forced to feel a lot of pain over a tale and person that has no bearing on reality. If I am going to watch a dark movie I want to learn something about the world. If I am going to watch something completely fake I want it to be enjoyable, or at least to like the characters. There is no one to like here. And it gets worse and worse as the movie goes on. Two thumbs down -- especially when he kills his mother.
Killer Joe (2011)
A sad and pointless swan song for Billy Friedkin
I am a William Friedkin fan and unafraid of "edgy" films. But this is garbage. Matthew McConaughey is way out of his league, Juno Temple (cute as she is) can't figure out how to play a pubescent eight year old (who could?) and the horrible dialog sinks the thing into meaningless sex, violence and sexual violence. There are a few powerful cinematic moments but they can't redeem Killer Joe. There is no one to care about and no reason to care. It should have been called "Portrait of Stupid Low Lifes- who lack the charisma of even the worst real human beings"
I read some decent reviews, but all I can say is I want my 100 minutes back.
Sympathy for Delicious (2010)
Unbearable
Overacted, overwritten, overwrought and unwatchable. Well that may not be quite fair, the cinematography is quite good except for the excessive shaky-cam. But the phony story is unbearable, the pseudo punks unbelievable and the fake priests are undeniable. Who finances trash like this? I shut it off (spoiler alert: as if you could spoil this turd) when "Delicious D." and "Padre Joe" are bargaining whether D. will get paid $3 or $7.50 per day for his magic healing powers. You can't make stuff like this up. Juliette Lewis is wasted (in more ways than one) and Orlando Bloom is an embarrassment to actors everywhere. Save your 96 minutes.
I rarely write reviews, because I rarely feel this strongly.
