Final Destination 2 (2003)
One of the best sequels of its genre.
Most of the time we like to pretend that sequels don't exist, especially in the horror genre, as they generally ruin most of what should have been left untouched from the first film. But every so often the horror genre nails a sequel that brings us everything we liked about the first entry and exemplifies it times two.
Final Destination was a great standalone film and truly didn't need the excessive sequels to follow. However, Final Destination 2 delivers and it surely doesn't disappoint. Taking place a few years after the events of the first film, Kimberly and her friends set out on a road trip turned deadly. Having a premonition of a horrific pile up, Kimberly evades death saving the lives of many in what should have been one of the worst pile ups in history. But we all know that you can't cheat death and death always comes back around!
Enlisting in Clear Rivers, survivor from the first film, Kimberly tries to save those who were meant to die on the highway that day from death itself. But with death lurking around every corner in the most unsuspecting of places, it's no easy task. The film moves at a solid pace, driving in character emotion as well as a building sense of urgency and suspense. The movie ties up every loose end from the first film, intertwining with the original in a creative, thought provoking manner.
Is this film better than the original? In some aspects yes but as a sucker for the original, I would have to say overall no. However, this film is miles better than the sequels to follow and if you have yet to give the Final Destination series a chance- I suggest ending your experience after watching the first two!
Resident Evil (2002)
Years of sequels and still the most solid, story-driven of the franchise!
I want to start off this review by saying that I am a fan of the video game franchise- far more than I am the film franchise. However, this review is an honest review about the film- Resident Evil- and the overall film franchise.
For starters the film kicks-off with a laboratory catastrophe, a viral outbreak of sorts which in turn, forces an emergency lock down on the facility leaving many for dead- setting the tone for the overall story line to this film. Milla Jovovich plays Alice, a woman who mysteriously awakens from an unconscious state which is implied to be taking place after the lab catastrophe. The mystery revolving her whereabouts, her identity, and the lingering sensation that she may be in immediate danger soon draws the audience in for the remaining 90 minute, action-packed Sci-Fi thriller!
Alice, along with a clean-up crew made up of a special military unit, soon unravel the horrible truth as to why the laboratory was put into lock down and the doors should have stayed locked! Brought to you with a chilling soundtrack, plenty of intense horror sequences, and jam-packed with some exciting choreography and action- Resident Evil is a truly timeless Sci-Fi thriller. Unlike its preceders, Resident Evil provides an intriguing story, a solid and likable cast, and ties up its own loose ends before setting us up for the sequel to follow.
Without a doubt in my mind, Resident Evil is by far the best film in the entire franchise. This is a film that knew exactly what it wanted to provide its audience- a fast-paced Sci-Fi thriller that would be enjoyable to those who played the games and to those who didn't- and needless to say Resident Evil nailed it! If you're a fan of the genre and have yet to get your hands on a copy, I highly recommend doing so. As stated, this a timeless flick that is great to watch for a little bit of action, suspense, and everything else you'd expect from a Sci-Fi film.
8/10 - and by far the best film of the franchise!
Final Stab (2001)
One of the best "B" movies I've seen.
Kristen is spoiled rich and always gets what she wants, even to see her very own sisters' psychotic boyfriend snap. So Kristen sets up the idea for a murder mystery party at an old house in the country. She invites people she went to college with and hires an actor to play a killer. She then has Angela (her sister) and Charlie (sisters boyfriend) come to the 'surprise' party. Kristen plans it out perfect, Charlie sees the first fake death right in the living room with everyone else and then he begins to panic and rushes out of the house. That's when Kristen's games begin. However, she thinks she has the perfect plot until the people really start dying. They really do have a killer among them. Sounds pretty good huh? Overall you could tell this movie was a "B" movie because of the poor directing and blood. The acting wasn't bad but as you can see plot is very good. Even though this was a predictable movie I'd rate this.. 6/10.
X-Men Legends (2004)
Best X-Men Game Ever!
Yes, X-Men Legends is by far the best X-Men game around. The missions throughout this game are very, very fun with a challenge as well. The characters abilities are superb and there are many to unlock. You have to kill people and gain EXP. to level up and such. The characters are fun to control and there are many to unlock. With the added bonus of the danger room, which you can play mini-missions and do scrimmages and things of that sort. The story mode is multi-player which defiantly gives this game a huge plus. The only major disappointment is not being able to replay the missions you've done. Even if the character detail isn't the greatest, this game has non-stop fun, I would rate it, 9/10!!
White Noise (2005)
Very scary, totally believable movie.
Jonathan Rivers (Keaton) was a successful architect with a successful writer for a wife. But after his wife dies in a tragic accident he is devastated. One day he meets a man, Raymond, who tells him he has received messages from Keaton's wife. At first, Jonathan is hesitant, but after reviewing happy home videos of him and his wife, he feels he must hear her one last time. He goes to Raymond's house and asks to hear the EVP. After hearing his wife he wants to get more involved with EVPs and he wants to see and hear his wife more. Once he begins to mess with the EVP devices he begins to see other people. I'm won't say who he sees and what happens beyond this point because of spoilers. This movie is defiantly a must see if you are at all interested. It has it's scary moments and the suspense keeps you wanting more. With a few twist thrown into it making it have an incredible ending I would rate this movie.. 8/10.
