Dark Marvels (2023)
Dark Marvelous!
This is such an epic show. I binged it in one sitting. It showcases the sadistic genius of humanity, detailing who, when, how and why some of the darkest inventions were thought up and brought to life. Not for the faint of heart, but full of history and even some legend, weapons, torture devices, rockets etc all had an origin and a purpose. This series is truly captivating, while detailing history, the brilliance of even the earliest weapons, the reverse engineering that furthered the advanced weaponry we see today and in some ways, shows how far we have come from the dark ages, which were filled with torture devices, used for the slightest misstep. I highly recommend taking the time to watch this!
V/H/S (2012)
V/H/S Confusion
I don't consider myself a movie critic, by any means, so this review is from your average person, just trying to be entertained and in this case, a little scared.
While I will say, each piece of found footage was entertaining, I really watched the whole movie, waiting to see how they tied together and was looking for a common denominator the entire time, just assuming that something linked each of these scary experiences.
Spoiler Alert- there is no link. Each found VHS is different people in different situations and then it just...ends. I feel like this would have been way cooler if the writers could have somehow tied these together. Without any link between each tape, it's just like watching 5 different short horror stories.
It was definitely entertaining, though. It kept my attention throughout. The ending was just really sub par, as in- there was no ending.
Blended (2014)
Ah, it feels like home.
It took me a while to watch this one but I am so glad I did. I love the Drew and Adam combo, as always. Sandler is a little more low-key than he is in his classics but we still get some of his antics, along with a really sweet story or two people who did not hit it off but get thrown together again, along with their kids.
There are a few draggy moments, here and there but overall, this is a must-see and absolutely rewatchable. A few teary moments, lots of laughs and an appearance from "10 Second Tom"! The guy from Happy Gilmore that awake in inspirational quotes is in too and Terry Crews carries things along, as well!
Watch it!
Devil in Ohio (2022)
Entertaining, I suppose...
Okay, first thing I must say is that I watched the whole series. Is it predictable? Yes. Alas, it kept my attention and did it's job. I was entertained.
But what in the name of lucifer was that ending?!?! Suzanne leaves her family to give May a home??? Or to process her trauma?? She literally chooses this girl over her own husband and children? And of course, finds out that May is not as innocent as she seems. That's villain-level decision making on Suzanne's part and in a real world scenario, is highly unlikely to have happened. I guess the idea is that May was praying to Satan and ended up getting her evil prayers answered and has Suzanne all to herself. To me, the ending really kind of blew the whole series for me. Nothing was resolved within the family and the dad is the only one who has any concept of how this damaged young woman could bring danger to their household?
The series was okay. Just "okay" but the ending was terrible.
Enola Holmes (2020)
A delight to watch with my daughter!
Let me first say, this is a family film. Some of the reviews indicate that there are fans of Sherlock Holmes here, pining for a historically accurate spin-off of the classic. This is not that.
This is a unique, whimsical and even odd tale, all its own. It was made to be fun for the kids, with a beloved young actress playing the lead.
I will say, there are a few dull moments, here and there. Not every moment is action packed and at times, the story feels a little arbitrary. That said, I enjoyed this movie very much and look forward to a sequel! Millie is perfect for this role and truly, it is her that makes this movie so worth watching!
The Tall Man (2012)
Extraordinary Film!
I suppose the ratings and reviews here might come from those who were anticipating a horror movie with a tall, shadow-like, leading man. Maybe I, myself saw the title and our main character as Jessica Biel and braced for cheap thrills. But this movie was so much more than I could have ever anticipated.
The wonder of it is not just an ending you won't expect, but a rich story that doesn't come into full view until the last seconds of the movie. You are then left wondering who is the villain and who is the hero of such a complicated web, woven together by many players.
Watch this film with an open mind, enjoying the thrills but also willing to welcome something you might not see coming.
The Boy (2016)
That was awesome!
Okay, call me easily entertained but I absolutely loved this take on the "baby alive" theme that has been done over and over. This particular film has all the makings of a solid horror but it does pull at other unexpected emotions, as well.
I totally felt myself rooting for the doll and kind of enjoyed the developing relationship between Brahams and his new caretaker. At the same time, I found myself acutely aware that this doll was capable of violence if he didn't get his way. This story has you questioning the nanny's sanity, how much the grocery delivery guy really knows and leaves you kind of questioning who the antagonist really is. And then.... TWIST!
