A film that has EVERYTHING...
9 June 2022
There is so much to love about Making The Day - A wonderful movie-maker-odd-couple underdog story with characters that are so engaging and leads so relatable and so lovable, it's absolutely impossible for you not to root for them. Over the journey these two superbly realized 'nothing in common' main characters (Juliette Bennett and Steven Randazzo) take to achieve their filmmaker dreams, they (and us) share a lot of laughs, moments of real and heartfelt drama and even a share of suspense, as they learn about the tricky indie movie business and themselves. In addition to Ms. Bennett and Mr. Randazzo, there are a number of memorable supporting characters as well including Dan Fogler (The Offer). Michael Canzoniero's direction is full of life and gives off an irresistible energy and the script by Canzionero and Michael Berenbaum is positively first rate. Truly one of the great movies about making movies. As well as reminding you how important Indie Film is, Making the Day will positively make your day. See It!

Crazy Love (I) (2007)
9/10
Awesome. Real people are far more compelling than fictional characters.

"Crazy Love" again shows us just how compelling real people and situations can be when compared to their fictional counterparts. The screenwriter has not yet been born who could come up with such a detailed, character-rich, period-to-present story. Simply outrageous, you can smell the ink of the old New York tabloids wafting from the screen. This film is endlessly entertaining, fascinating, scary, funny, familiar, confusing and confounding. I think that New Yorkers will find the film and it's tone particularly interesting. The stock footage and stills are outdone only by the amazing Bronx/Brooklyn-ese accents whining from this quirky but genuine group. Think of it, single scandalous crime whose layers have been evolving and unfolding for 50 years now. A must see!

Amexicano (2007)

...complex human beings - - legal and illegal...

Yes, this movie is at least a 10!!! Finally a movie that treats it audience with respect - - it takes us through a wonderful and meaningful story with humor and drama but with none of the usual clichés or preachy or trite storytelling that we are served over and over again. I am not alone in my assessment of this wonderful film. I spent a Saturday morning at the Tribeca Film Festival with a sold out crowd who expressed the same feelings as mine with a lengthy and roaring applause of approval as the credits ran.

"Amexicano" makes its point on the issue of immigration and "the undocumented" without polarizing its audience with politics, race and class. This is a story about human beings, complex human beings - - legal and illegal. The authentic and endearing performances from Carmine Famiglietti, Raul Castillo, Jennifer Pena and all the supporting players are the cornerstone of this great independent film.

It's refreshing to see a filmmaker pack a film with honesty and integrity without fearing we can't handle it - - much like the movies Hollywood produced during the Golden Age of the 1970's. These days it seems to me that Hollywood feels that movies devoid of substance, truth, moral conflict and that lack humanity is what people want.

Stanley Kubrick once said: "Don't give the audience what they want, give them what they don't know they want yet". Matthew Bonifacio's "Amexicano" truly gives its audience "what they don't know they want yet".
