Surge (2020)
Wonderfully realised portrayal of a mental collapse
Taken at face value you could mistake this movie for a Falling Down clone set in the UK, but that's a huge disservice to the excellent job Whishaw does of conveying the build up, and aftermath, of a mental breakdown. Minimal dialog and free-hand camera work make the experience immersive, and Aneil Karia's direction does a great job of keeping the audience slightly detached from the reality going on around the protagonist, just as he feels detached from the world. Highly recommended.
The Crush (1993)
Constant hyper sexualisation of a minor. Awful.
Alicia Silverstone may have been 16 when this was made, but her character is supposed to be 14 ("nearly 15"). There are repeated 'sexy' shots of her in swimwear, underwear, up skirt scenes on a swing and at one point nude (though you don't see more than a body-doubles bottom). Cary Elwes character is portrayed as struggling with his conscience over her age rather than shutting down her advances right away as he should, he displays some very questionable responses to Silverstone's advances, kissing her and spying on her naked from inside a cupboard. He's displaying actions boarding on paedophilia but he's supposed to be the hero of the story. The way the whole thing is presented feels like the grubby fantasy of a creepy Hollywood director and it's very uncomfortable to watch.
