Marriage Story (2019)
One of the best character driven movies ever
Hard to say much because this movie is an emotional masterpiece. Both Driver and Johansson are absolutely flawless in their performances. I cannot recommend this movie enough to anyone who wants a film with depth, emotion, characters, and realism. Definitely should be an Oscar contender for both leads, direction, and script at the very least.
Superman Returns (2006)
A great continuation of the Richard Donner movies
I haven't watched this one in a while, so decided to go back to give it another look - it's actually a much better Superman movie than people give it credit for. Yes, there are a couple of questionable plot points, but overall the movie is sound and is 100% in the spirit of the 1978 Superman/Superman II. Brandon Routh is fantastic in continuing Christopher Reeve's Clark/Superman, there are some fun shoutouts to the movies/comics, and the original John Williams score is still iconic. Honestly, comic book fans shouldn't pass this one up.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019)
Worth the wait
This miniseries completely lived up to my fondest memories of the original. I vividly remember seeing TDC in the theater when it first came out, and fifteen minutes into the first episode I felt exactly the wonder and magic of Thra just as I had then. Fantastic storytelling, stellar puppetwork and fx, and a hard hitting voice cast make this a more than worthy treat not only for all of us who were transported into the world of the Mystics, Gelfling, and Skeksis back in 1982 but for the next generation as well.
Batman: Hush (2019)
"Hush" in name only
Why bother taking a critically acclaimed storyline and choosing to follow only about 20% of it? "Hush" is literally not even Hush! Up until now, the DC animated movies have been mostly top notch, but this is a serious fumble for them. I understand that they made changes to try and fit this into the current animated continuity, but the changes made the whole story almost unrecognizable. They would have been much better served instead making it a stand alone movie and keeping the original story intact instead of this mishmash. Very disappointed.
Annihilation (2018)
One that makes you think
Most of the bad reviews I've seen on here are from people who were somehow thinking or expecting this to be some sort of action/adventure movie. While there's a market for those, these people are blaming the movie for their own lack of understanding of what kind of movie this was - I don't go to an opera and give it a bad rating just because there wasn't a hot dog and pretzel guy walking thru the audience selling snacks.
Go in expecting to actually think and not have answers spoon fed to you - or even given to you at all - and you might enjoy it. I did.
Supernatural: Like a Virgin (2011)
Sam is the real standout here...
The episode was not bad, but the real standout is Jared Padalecki - seeing him back as the old Sam really throws a spotlight on how much nuance and character he gives the character and highlights the subtle differences in facial expressions and body language from soulless Sam in the previous episodes of this season. The casting in this show has always been top notch and the acting always great, but Padalecki really shows his chops here. Kudos.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Don't listen to the critics - form your own opinion
OK, so my verdict on Batman v. Superman: See it for yourself, don't listen to the critics, make your own decision. I for one liked it. I can see how a lot of people won't - it's not like the Marvel movies. Don't get me wrong, I completely enjoy the Marvel takes...but an average person can go in and watch one and it will lead you by the hand thru the story and throw in some snappy one liners. BvS is more for the actual readers of comics from the 80s and early 90s, when they were much better than they are now, and the movie makes assumptions that you are at least slightly familiar with the characters. Affleck did a good job as the Batman, brought both the physicality and the gravitas to the role that it needed (and nice to see some actual detective work by "the world's greatest detective"). Also the movie did a good job completely conveying the fact that Superman is really the persona that Kansas raised Clark Kent puts on...and Bruce Wayne is the persona that the Batman puts on. Completely got that from the movie. Not sure I got behind the portrayal of Lex Luthor as the twitchy damaged rich kid; sure it's a different take on the character, but it just didn't ring any bells for me. Again, would have liked to see Superman/Clark not quite so angsty, that's really not quite how I've ever seen Superman being. He should be very much the "Boy Scout" that the classic comics and Chris Reeve crystallized him as. And Gal Gadot - all kinds of yes as Wonder Woman. She gets the look just right, the attitude, and does not disappoint in the action department. Definitely will be seeing her solo film.
All in all, I'm pleased. Some stuff straight out of The Dark Knight Returns, some other stuff added on. I am NOT a fan of the editing in this film, I'll say. It was very choppy and abrupt in places, jarringly so. I know they had to cut a lot out to get it to a manageable theater playing time, so maybe it will be a smoother ride in the Bluray extended version release. It's not perfect, but it's not the train wreck that some critics are putting out there. Honestly, I think the old school comics readers will mostly be pleased, the comic book movie only fans will be more up in the air, but I found it fairly fun. Had some problems, but it's more Superman II than Superman III.
