The North Water (2021)
Tremendous
Found this by accident. Moody blistering story that you just don't want to end.
Colin Farrells best ever acting role playing the fearsome unpredictable but darkly clever Drax. Watch and drift aboard a mesmerising journey into the cold..
Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown: Scotland (2015)
Spellbound
The stag hunt was extraordinary viewing. Set against one of Earths most stunning backdrops you could feel every heartbeat. Jaw dropping stuff
The Fall (2013)
Turgid
On and on and on and on it plods.
Series 2 was pointless.
Only watched as my partner persevered with it.
Absolutely littered with plot holes, poor script writing and tedious drawn out conversations with no relevance to the story.
Guy should've been arrest and jailed after the 3rd episode.
Makes the PSNI look like the keystone cops.
Don't waste your time...
Rise of the Clans (2018)
Great Historical Docudrama
Absolutely jaw dropping scenery of mountains, castles and lochs is the setting for this drama documentary piece.. The story of the Gael / Viking clans of western Scotland and the politics and intrigue in their support of down and out King of Scots Robert the Bruce. And of those other clans that they did not see eye to eye to. Great piece of a very interesting historical era.
Calibre (2018)
Brilliant Brooding Simmering
This film just sucks you in...
Don't want to give much of the plot away, but bit by bit watching the lead duo gradually sinking in their own wretched schemes is mesmerising
A film that, although it moves at the same meandering pace is utterly relentless
Best British film thriller in years
Valhalla Rising (2009)
A very realistic journey into the darker ages
Having read some of the comments on here from the Historical pedants to the Hollywood affictionados its best you just ignore them. First off for the pedants this story is set in North West Scotland, a desolate and wild place settled by Vikings who became the likes of the Clan Gunn, Munro, Morrisons, Mcleods all assimilated to the ways of the Hebridean Seaboard and the Western Seas. The ship is identical to a Birlinn favoured by the Lords Of the Isles who patrolled these seas. The weapons also. Contrary to history Vikings didn't always use longboats and having settled inScotland for a few hundred years changed their craft. So if you can get your head around the ship drifting to The American or Canadian coastline then sit back and enjoy. A reslentless tale that more than any film gives you an idea of what it would take to survive in these ages. Brutal as the time dictates, harsh as the climate and landscape demands. For those talking about viking hygiene, get a grip. Trust me even in this day and age hygiene is the last thing on your mind when trekking and surving on the Sutherland Mountains... sustenance and shelter then staying alive and thats about it! For the comments about surviving and fighting on a diet of gruel these clans often undertook war and raiding parties with no more than a bag of oats which they soaked in the blood drained from the hind legs of cattle.. The film in my opinion aboslutely nails the historical aspects and thats what gives it the realism. The collection of warriors, looking to redeem themselves as a conscience nags away takes them to a place every bit as violent and unforgiving as the land they left. This film stays with you. You'll imaginge if you could survive in such a time and place and respect those that could. Some films don't need much dialogue, Apocalypto was another. Just let yourself become absorbed in the age where life was expendable.
