Charlotte Wakes (2017)
A 5 Star only for the first 3/4 of the movie
The last 1/4 is SUCH HORRIBLE RIDICULOUSNESS that it only gets a 1 star. The other reviewers weren't wrong, but I have to say I actually liked most of the movie. It was somewhat original, the acting wasn't great, but it was nowhere near as bad as many B horror movies. The house and surrounding area was extremely creepy and it really had the makings of something good, until ii didn't. Don't bother with this one, it's sadly a waste of time.
The Void (2016)
Bad. Bad. Really bad.
Honestly, worst "horror" movie, "sci fi", whatever, I have literally ever seen. Clearly all of the good reviews were written by people directly involved in the making of this crap film. So sad. Not frightening. Not interesting. Not entertaining. I can't even believe I sat through the whole miserable thing. One plus, the acting wasn't half bad.
Slasher (2016)
Great villain, good plot, mediocre acting, horrible ending
This was a good story, different plot then the usual hometown serial killer, that has been done so many times. Too bad the actors, especially the central characters, were all mediocre at best in acting ability. Some of the side characters were FAR BETTER actors. The very first episode hooked you, locked you in, and made you want to watch more, but as each episode progressed, it became less believable, and a little predictable. The final episode was horrendous, one of the worst ending episodes I have ever seen in any thriller/horror series. Still, it was entertaining and worth a few days of marathoning if you have nothing better to do.
The Caretaker (2012)
Started REALLY BAD then I started liking it
I don't know what to say about this weird vampire movie. I have to say that for the first 2/3 of it I kept thinking this has to be one of the worst movies, especially vampire movies ever made. Somehow though, I still kept watching and I am glad I did. I might have given it a higher rating if 3 things were better. First the acting is horrendous. None of these people can act, another reviewer mentioned it reminding him of high school acting in a play. There were parts that were down right campy, (possibly intentional?), when the vampires would attack each other, or "fight" for territory, just dumb. Second the script was really overly dramatic in parts, people saying things that are just not real dialog, etc. Felt like someone very inexperienced wrote the script. Trying to make the movie better by creating all these stupid lines. The constant poetic talk that the main vampire starts doing in the last half of the movie, what is that about?? OK, and last, the music is just done bad. The songs/score are fine, but the volume pumps up at times to the point you have to turn it down, and it isn't even necessarily in a part where you would expect to have loud and dramatic music. Here are the things I liked about it. I liked the story, instead of the usual humans running around trying to keep from being killed/turned by vampires, you have this whole other concept where the vampire looks out for the humans during the night, if they watch out for him during the day. Interesting and nothing I have seen done before. The location was nicely done with the landscape colors being so vivid, and the sky going from day to night. The ending was good, even the acting seemed to improve in the last few scenes. I am thinking if this movie had a bigger budget with better actors and a better script, this might be really great.
Night of the Sinner (2009)
Had potential, but I have seen TV movies better than this.
This movie started off well enough, nice location, creepy big castle. They could have done a lot more with the castle actually to improve the overall creepy feeling of the movie. What we get are some great outdoor shots, plenty of shots of one particular small staircase, and other than that, could have been shot in any warehouse made to look like a semi Gothic room in a castle. The story is really very weird. I can honestly say it wasn't predictable at all, except for the obvious Englund being the creepy bad guy. The story is about this guy who hires a woman to catalog his book collection. He supposedly isn't there when she gets there, but talks to her via phone. Actually he is there, and instead of the story taking some possibilities from this, like him lurking around watching her, they really don't do anything with it. The old woman playing the part of the servant is quite creepy and obviously keeping many secrets. The story could have gone on with some great scenes of the lead character sneaking about trying to find out what is going on, almost being caught, etc. But this only happens once, and it is quick and bizarre, and you're left wondering just who is the bad guy and what is with this room she discovered. Then the already weird story goes downhill for the rest of the movie, not really providing anything scary, surprising, or interesting. The ending, while it does explain the reason Englund is bad, is just plain awful. The thing missing most from this movie is suspense. The lead actress is horrible. Don't waste your time watching this. Watch Castle Freak instead, I believe shot in the same castle in Italy, and much more exciting and entertaining.
Castle Freak (1995)
Don't be swayed by the cover, this movie is fantastic!
OK, this movie I saw years ago and just now found it again. I have looked for it on Netflix, but they have never added it which is a real shame given the amount of truly awful movies they do have streaming. This movie is a classic horror movie. It is like no other story I have ever seen, the location is creepy as hallway after hallway, stairway after stairway just makes for a very good suspenseful movie. The "Castle Freak" is truly wonderful in this movie, probably the best actor in it. Great special effects used to create his look. There is some disgusting violent moments if you are grossed out easily, and some serious nakedness, though brief. I like that the Castle Freak is not easily overtaken, he is fast, seemingly intelligent despite his horrible upbringing, and at times he even shows true sadness in his emotions. I actually felt myself feeling sorry for him a few times! The lead actor completely overacts throughout the whole movie, the wife and daughter are better. I do think it is weird how this movie, done in 1995, has the look and feel of a movie done in the late 70's/early 80's. Not sure if it is the film quality or if they meant it to be this way. Regardless, I would recommend this to anyone who likes a unique horror movie with an actual story.
Evil Dead (2013)
If you can stand the HUGE amount of gore, pretty good movie
I have not seen the first Evil Dead. So I am basing this review entirely on my thoughts of only this movie. First, if you are squeamish at all about blood and gore, this movie is most definitely NOT for you. If you aren't bothered by it, than this movie is actually pretty good. There are some obvious parts where, like in any other horror movie, you are sitting there saying, "please, no halfway intelligent person would do this". The thing I liked best about this movie was the demon which possesses Mia. Very scary looking, especially all the scenes in the cellar and when it was peaking out of the cellar. I reminded of Linda Blair in Exorcist. The big question I had was, in the book Eric found, it said the demon had to get 5 souls and then it would be released from hell. I don't think it ever got the 5 souls. As you see in the movie, there is one part where one of the characters dies, but it isn't by the demons hand. So his soul wouldn't have been taken by the demon. Then, the soul of Mia, although originally possessed, gets returned to her by the actions of David, so again, no soul there either. Ahh, but no horror movie is without goofs! I still liked it and would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes a good, VERY Gory, horror movie.
Sanitarium (2013)
Good movie, depressing look at mental illness
This was a good movie. Not anything fantastic, but worth watching on a rainy day. It was very much like a Twilight zone, with 3 different stories, or the old 80's movies/TV shows Tales of the Crypt. The first story has John Glover, doing an excellent job of portraying the crazy artist struggling to hang onto reality. The second stars Lacey Chabert, playing a concerned school teacher worried about the welfare of one of her students who might be being abused by his father (played wonderfully by Chris Mulkey). The best story was the last, with Lou Diamond Phillips. He was really convincing as a college professor who becomes obsessed with the Mayans prediction of the end of the world in 2012. His obsession has him spending his family's' savings creating an underground bunker to protect them when the time comes. All three stories are about people who have lost touch with reality. They are institutionalized and then you get flashbacks of their lives before they were committed. Would recommend if you like this type of story.
Entity (2012)
Seen this type of story too many times
I don't mind the "lost camera footage" or movies where they are filming as they go, but this one wasn't one of the better ones. The first almost half of the movie was pretty good, slow moving to build suspense and get to know the characters some. Good outside shots, creepy. Then when they get inside and things start happening, that's when it starts to go down hill. The footage they are filming, and thus we are seeing their experiences thru, is really fuzzy, shaky, and almost unwatchable. You don't really see anything, just a bunch of screaming and falling down. The shots of the evil spirit, or whatever you want to call it, are horrible and the special effects on it are ridiculous, wouldn't scare a small child. The story is the same as every other movie where they go into an old abandoned sanitarium/warehouse/prison. Things start to happen, someone goes missing, screams coming from somewhere within the building, they can't find their way out etc. The ending was a little different, but not enough to bother recommending this to anyone. Too bad because I thought it could have been better. The acting was good, the location was creepy, just the same old same old with the story.
The Haunting of Helena (2012)
This could have been so much better. It is unpredictable however.
The first half of the movie, involving the mother and her daughter moving into an old apartment with a spooky past, is good. Creepy and suspenseful. The idea of the tooth fairy, and plot of the story is a good one. The special effects are very good, and the gore is minor, which I actually like. The scene where you finally see the "tooth fairy" is really good, scary and well directed. Then however, the movie takes a turn for the worse. It is slow moving and boring to some degree. The whole storyline within the mental hospital is disconnected to the first half of the story. It loosely ties into the history of the apartment, but kind of goes off the rails from there. It is unpredictable which is refreshing, the ending was not what I expected. The mother is the only person in the movie that you have any real connection with. The daughter is unpleasing, and a bit scary looking to begin with. I think I would recommend this if you like spooky movies that are not run of the mill, and low on gore. Good story, just kind of seemed like to parts that didn't tie in well together.
Thirst (2010)
A really good movie, way better than I was expecting
Based on the average review of 4.5 stars, I was really hesitant to even watch this, but I like this kind of movie, and have always thought Lacey Chabert was a pretty decent actress. I'm glad I gave it a chance. I thought the character development was nicely done. It wasn't just a survivalist movie with a cast of people you could care less about. I thought it seemed pretty realistic overall, except there were a few obvious errors, such as the lack of sunburn that would have definitely been there after so many days in the hot sun. The twist towards the end, not really a twist, but something I didn't pick up on until it actually presented itself, was genius. Not sure that it is that believable tho, probably the coyote would have gotten to it first. I won't say what it is because I don't want to ruin it for anyone. I would recommend this to anyone, and even say it is probably one of the very best of this type of "stranded in the desert with not enough supplies etc." movies out there.
Save Me (2013)
Really great show, Anne Heche is wonderful!
I love this show! I have always liked Anne Heche, from way back in her soap opera days. She is wonderful in this. Very uplifting and fun. Funny but not in the usual slapstick, one liner, sitcom way. Hope this show gets good reviews and a lot of followers. Love to see it picked up again next year. Anne gets a second chance at life, family, and friends after she accidentally chokes on a sandwich. God has intervened and helped this misguided, alcoholic, joke of the neighborhood, become the person she has always wished she was. Now it's just convincing the rest of the people in her life that she indeed has changed, God really does talk to her, and she is definitely NOT crazy. Different storyline for a sitcom. Refreshing.
