The Sandman (2022)
pretty good until episode 7
I really enjoyed the first six episodes of the show even with all the flaws. For example the way they kept cutting to the ruby during the "24/7" episode.. I know the ruby is making these people do the things they do. You already told me that. You can STOP showing me the ruby every time something happens. Thank you. And in the episode "Dream a little dream of me" Jenna Coleman's acting was pretty bad. I think she was uncomfotable with the character or something I don't know but she was just plain bad. Also the writing, and especially the conversatons Constantine has with Erica were awful. I still enjoyed those first six episodes though
But the story of the last four with the vortex and stuff just wasn't as much fun. And everybody except for a few key people were obviously graduates of Jenna Coleman school of acting. The only positives I can think of in those four episodes are Stephen Fry, the Corinthian and the twins Desire and Despair. I hope to see more of those two in the next season.
Also #justiceforgregory.
Trese (2021)
lazy and mediocre
So I want to start by saying that I don't know anything about Filipino culture. I also don't think you have to know about a culture to understand if a story is told well. This story wasn't told well.
The dialogue is mediocre. The characters have no depth and nobody actually grows. Everyone explains how they feel without showing it, which is a big problem with most shows tbh. Explaining what had happened just to fill in the blank spots so that the viewer understands characters' motives is lazy writing. We're watching a show Brenda, not listening to an audiobook.
Except for a couple of characters, the designs are not memorable at all. You don't really know who is who and why are they doing the things they do is so poorly explained. The alliances make no sense. Trying to fit in all that info and characters and events in 6 episodes was obviously a bad idea.
I like gore, but strangely even the gore felt out of place sometimes.
It's not the worst show I've seen, but I'm not gonna remember this. Watch it if you have nothing else to watch.
La nuit des rois (2020)
an experience
It is not easy to talk about this movie tbh. It is a movie about the affect stories have on us. How they come to be, how they change... And also a movie about oral tradition and how a story can be whatever the story-teller wants it to be.
It feels like you're watching a play on the bond between the story teller, the listeners and the story itself rather than a movie. But you're watching the play up close: you are on stage with the actors. I thought it was beautiful and enjoyed it a lot.
Hereditary (2018)
this movie is devastating and I love it
I love it when horror movies, or movies of any genre for that matter, can evoke a feeling so strong that you can't stop thinking about it. This is one of those movies. The despair and desperation of these characters in a game they don't want to be involved in but can't get out of is so difficult and heartbreaking to watch. Everything unravels slowly and that might be hard for some people who expect constant action from movies. This movie dwells in feeling more than action for most of its runtime and when something happens it has weight. Some scenes punch you so hard in the gut they leave you breathless.
I found myself smiling sometimes after the initial shock of visceral horror, because few horror movies can manage to do that. I love this movie. I love Toni Collette, not only in the legendary dinner scene, but throughout the movie she just IS that character. It's amazing. She's amazing.
I love this. Highly recommend.
The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
one of my favorite movies
It's been a long time since I first watched this movie. After my first watch I realized that I couldn't stop thinking about it. I watched it again and again. I made my friends watch it. I even made some of my dates watch it with me just to see how they would react. If they would like it as much as I did. Some of them hated it, some of them thought it was just fine, but none of my dates and nobody in my close circle or friends thought it was anything special. I don't like glossing over things by saying it's just personal preference or taste. And the fact that I loved this movie to the point that I wouldn't stop talking about it when my friends saw it as just another movie and even boring, made the situation even more interesting.
I then realized that this was the first movie with a character that I actually identified with. This dark, depressing, stressful, inescapable hellhole Thomasin finds herself in was familiar. Her frustration, her weakness, her desperation and eventual hatred was familiar. Anya Taylor-joy acts so well that I was drawn in and hated what I found myself in. I had such a big emotional response to it that it is now one of my favorite movies ever, even though I hated how bad I felt whenever her mother shouted at her or whenever she was being unreasonable or when her father dismissed her for speaking up.
Just an extra thought (SPOILERS): I can't decide whether this movie is feminist or not. Yes, Thomasin grows strong and leaves her shackled life behind after killing her mother, which I interpreted as killing the idea of a womanhood she didn't want to be a part of. But then she signs a contract that binds her to another power. She has never been free. She is never going to be free. Yes she finds herself in a sisterhood, but they are all bound by their promise. So even though the ending looks kinda happy, I think it's very depressing.
I'm planning to make many more people watch this movie.
The Lighthouse (2019)
a storm
This movie is a very solid mystery, horror. And before you watch it, know that things that happen are open to interpretation. Don't expect the be guided.
It was harder to follow what was going on compared to the VVitch, which is one of my favorite horror movies, but that didn't take anything out of the story. Dafoe and Pattinson are both brilliant in this, Dafoe especially with all the madness, confusion and the ups and downs. Some scenes between those too made me feel like I was witnessing an actual storm.
By the end you might have some questions about what actually happened and honestly, I don't really know either. As I said it's open to interpretation. However, that doesn't affect the story negatively I think, because whatever the reality is doesn't change the fact that this is a brilliantly acted and written piece of cinema.
UNHhhh (2016)
untouchable duo
This is a show about everything and anything really. Just two biological women talking about random stuff, telling stories, sharing opinions on things and giving advice. Not always good advice, but still... I've been a fan of Katya since I first watched season 7 of RPDR and became a fan of Trixie in time, thanks to this show. Their interaction with each other and relationship is so natural and fun to watch.
Most of the time the conversations are all over the place. Sometimes hard to follow if you can't catch the references, but that's not a big problem. The only "big" problem I have with it is that this messiness is a bit much sometimes. Yes, chaos can be fun, but sometimes it gets overwhelming and even unbearable. Still a good show.
Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995)
painful to watch
So let me start by saying that this movie is not easy to watch if you had been bullied in school. And I think it would still be hard to watch for people who hadn't been bullied tbh.
It is a realistic slice of a young girl's life. I say realistic, but the characters and the way they treat Dawn might seem a bit exaggerated. I mean being the child of such a horrible mother and a disinterested father is possible of course. However, that and the horrible school environment and bad teachers all together are just too much. So you might feel like you're watching a movie adapted from a comic book. That''s how I felt. Some of the child actors are just average but noone is flat out bad. Plus, Heather Matarazzo is great and even if the others were bad she could still carry the film herself.
A painful watch, but it's worth the pain.
Sweet Tooth (2021)
Kinda disappointing
I loved reading the comic books back in 2014. It was one of the best stories of tolerance and perseverance I've read, and it's still one of my favorites.
Even though I liked some of the shots and the CGI in this, it feels hollow unlike the comic books. It's like those motivational quotes you see. You know it's wholesome and carries a good message, but it's so empty. A show like this needs strong dialogue to carry itself forward, but the writing is so average that it hurts. At the end of some episodes I felt like the narrator was ACTUALLY reciting motivational quotes. Painful.
The original story was a slow burner and the characters had time to build relationships. It left room for you to get to know everybody. This series feels rushed and you don't have time to feel sympathy for any of those people.
I really wanted to love this. Honestly.
Dragon's Dogma (2020)
The writing could've been much better
The show doesn't allow the viewer to get to know the characters. The characters' reactions to unexpected and tragic things that happen around them feel absurd and alien. The side-characters introduced are unmemorable.
This all leads to the story feeling bland and almost pointless. If I don't care about the character why would I care about what happens to that character?
I like the theme and the art style but this show could be much MUCH better with some solid writing.
