a rare miss for Pixar
1 January 2011
I am a huge Pixar fan - HUGE! But this one is definitely a relative miss. The plot is ridiculous, it has tons of inconsistencies, the story is weak, I didn't feel much for any of the characters, it portrays the worst stereotypes, manages to make city people look stupid AND also makes country folk look stupid, etc. etc.

There are some amusing jokes, and the visuals are gorgeous as usual for Pixar films, but that's about all I can put in the Pros column for this movie.

Even the best artists in the world sometimes produce a dud. I hope that's what really happened here, because the alternative is that this was just designed to be a cash-in movie.

Weirdest move ever. No, seriously.
17 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I definitely enjoyed the weirdness and quirkiness of the movie... but... jeez, even for a person who enjoys weirdness and quirkiness like me, even for me this movie was pushing my limits. I thought that the non-desert scenes were MUCH better than the desert scenes. Unfortunately, the desert scenes make up the majority of the movie. For people who enjoy odd movies, I'd recommend that they watch this movie, but I'd tell them to hit the pause button and take a few breaks in the middle. It's a very fun and interesting movie, but it gets to be a bit too much for one sitting.

Seriously, this is the weirdest movie ever.

This movie is not funny dumb, it's just boring dumb
18 April 2007
I love dumb comedies, like Airplane or I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, but this movie is just not funny. I had a small chuckle at maybe 2 jokes, but that's it. I'm not judging this movie as bad because the jokes were low brow or because the setup was stupid, I'm rating this movie as bad because it didn't make me laugh, and that's all that matters in a comedy.

On top of not making me laugh, the movie is basically one giant commercial. I'm not talking about product placement, I'm talking about the actors looking right at the camera and doing a full on product endorsement commercial. And it didn't happen just once or twice, the commercials are continuous. I bet if you added up the time of scenes where there was a major product commercial on screen vs. time of scenes when there weren't, it'd probably be about 2/3 of the movie is all commercial advertisements. And the parts that aren't commercials are just not funny.

Not funny. Not funny. Not funny.

This movie is a bit more funny if you've seen the gong show TV series
9 July 2006
If you haven't seen the gong show TV series then you won't like this movie much at all, not that knowing the series makes this a great movie.

I give it a 5 out of 10 because a few things make it kind of amusing that help make up for its obvious problems.

1) It's a funny snapshot of the era it was made in, the late 1970's and early 1980's. 2) You get a lot of funny cameos of people you've seen on the show. 3) It's interesting to see Chuck (the host) when he isn't doing his on air TV personality. 4) You get to see a lot of bizarre people doing all sorts of weirdness just like you see on the TV show.

I won't list all the bad things because there's a lot of them, but here's a few of the most prominent.

1) The Gong Show Movie has a lot of the actual TV show clips which gets tired at movie length. 2) The movie's story line outside of the clip segments is very weak and basically is made up of just one plot point. 3) Chuck is actually halfway decent as an actor, but most of the rest of the actors are doing typical way over the top 1970's flatness.

It's a good movie to watch when you don't have an hour and a half you want to watch all at once. Watch 20 minutes at a time and it's not so bad. But even then it's not so good either. ;)

The only reason this movie gets a 2 instead of a 1 is because it's laughably bad!
10 October 2005
I can't imagine what other people are seeing in this movie that I'm missing. I was laughing throughout this movie because it's so laughably bad! Every gang has it's own costume like they were dressed ready to do a Broadway show. There's a "Gang President" that controls all the other gangs? I had no idea that democracy flourished so freely in New York's gang underworld! Good for you! And all the gangs in the city agree to send 9 and only 9 totally unarmed "delegates" to somebody else's turf where they KNOW there are going to be members of every other rival gang? Sure, totally believable. And every gang member pays their fare in the middle of the night and doesn't hop the turnstile. Of course not! Who could imagine such a thing? This movie is good, but only because it's so unintentionally bad! It's just like the movie "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka", except this movie doesn't know it's a joke. Especially if you live in New York, rent this movie and have yourself a good chuckle.

Big up yourself!
7 October 2005
Yo, me an' my bitches tink dat dis be da funnest movie dat been seen yo. This movie gets a 9 because it is GREAT at what it is trying to be. Don't think you're getting an intellectual movie here. This movie aims to be a hilarious stupid comedy, and it hits the mark right on. Its a spoof on wanna be gangstas from Britain that wish they were from an American 'hood. It's so HILARIOUS! I couldn't catch my breath. To anyone who is thinking about watching this movie or choosing to rate it, you have to remember that it is not trying to be The Godfather. It is aiming to be funny. And thats it. It is not trying to have a message. It is not trying to make you feel romantic. It is solely aiming to be funny. And it hits that target with a nuclear bomb. Watch it! Much respect! Big up yourself!

cool movie
6 October 2005
dog day afternoon is a good movie. It has a lot of interesting moments. Pacino is a great actor of course. He gives a really great performance. It brings up some political points that were probably controversial at the time the movie came out. It is a bit long, but the plot kind of requires it to be the length it is. If you love new york, the opening montage during the credits gives some great shots of new york in the 1970's. It's a cool movie that really puts you in the moment. I'd say more but I want to keep this spoiler free. Watch this movie when you are in the mood for a character driven movie. If you are looking for a blow'em up action flick, choose a different movie.

Terrible, I don't know what people see in this movie
5 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I just finished watching this movie and I have to say it was terrible.

* Spoilers ahead *

There were tremendous plot holes at every moment. Why didn't the "body guard" wear a bullet proof vest? Why were the doors of the car unlocked? Why is the girl safe when she's at school or somebody's house? It was painfully obvious every time they were setting up a plot device. I knew exactly what was going to happen ten minutes before anything happened. The way they set up the story they made the whole movie into 1 giant cliché after another. Every thing in this movie I had seen a thousand times before in countless other movies. The only reason why it gets any stars at all is because visually there were some pretty shots, Walken is always great, and they did a good job of making Dakota seem cute. Other then that, if you've seen any other 10 movies in your life you've seen everything that happens in this movie.

So great that I had to write my first IMDb comment ever!
6 December 2004
I had no idea what this movie was about before seeing it, so I had no preconceptions or expectations. I loved this film. If you aren't shallow you'll love this film too.

First off, heres the only minor bad point. It's on the long side. But it couldn't have been any shorter. Some of the long takes are what makes this movie so amazing because you really feel uncomfortable (in a really amusing way) when you have to watch the characters suffer through an uncomfortable moment. Totally freakin hilarious.

If you've ever felt out of place in the world, you'll love this movie.
