Elvis (2022)
Think rock and roll is all *ew* and like totally cringe? This movie's for you!
I couldn't force myself to sit through the entire thing, but what I've seen looked like a never-ending trailer for yet another franchise movie. Should we expect more films set in this Elvis™ universe™? The movie even had that trailer-like uninterrupted soundtrack made out of familiar old melodies that were merged together using dramatic sound effects, remixed, manipulated, slowed down, sped-up, voices autotuned, sampled, set to modern beats or cheesy string orchestration. And, of course, those tunes change every few seconds to fit the development of the scene-and the disappearingly small attention span of the intended audience. If you enjoy watching timeless songs being butchered on shows like The Voice, mercilessly edited to suit the format and constantly interrupted by celebs showing you how you must react, this has the very same vibe. Elvis is not a biopic, it is the Elvis brand repackaged and remixed for the TikTok generation.
Disclaimer: I was born decades after the era depicted in the movie and I've never been a particular fan of that era of music, but I respect it. So I was hoping to learn more about what Elvis Presley was really like, and, of course, to be entertained. Elvis fails in both regards, but it succeeds in insulting both the subject matter and the intelligence of the viewer. It makes the Bohemian Rhapsody movie look like a timeless masterpiece.
Having watched and rated 2,000+ titles over the past decade at IMDB, I've never been compelled to write a negative review. Until now.
Cube (1997)
If Kafka Made Movies...
The entire situation is a simple allegory for life in a human society. If you're looking for a standard "let's play a game" horror flick filled with jump scares and gore, this isn't it.
You'll spend 90 minutes with a bunch of "normal" people (i.e. humankind) that possess a variety of virtues and vices. The protagonists are trying to escape a big and seemingly pointless maze, full of boobytraps, dead ends and moving targets. Is this someone's sick joke? A grand conspiracy? Or just a product of other humans who only did their jobs one day at a time? The whole thing must have cost cubic dollars *ba dum-tsss*. Why were these people placed there? Because reasons. Otherwise the whole thing would be pointless, right? So keep moving. Or don't?
I found the film both stimulating and entertaining, and I expect it be memorable. Give it a watch.
Nocturnal Animals (2016)
A Depiction of Pain Through the Eyes of the One Unwillingly Causing It
A terrifying and beautiful film about a creative person sublimating pain the only way they know how. They channel the overwhelming sadness of loss into their creative work seeking some kind of closure, one that may remain elusive nevertheless. At times such a creation never reaches its intended audience. The feeling of guilt can force the one causing pain to run and even suppress any memory of the past into nonexistence. Fortunately, it is not the case with Nocturnal Animals, otherwise we'd never see her read his story. That would be a sad loss in itself.
