Kenobi: A Star Wars Fan Film (2019)
Better than Disney's Version
This was a fun short little film. I was surprised by the quality of the acting and cinematography. This is one of the best fan films that I have ever seen. There is clearly a passion for the characters and the story behind this labor of love. Kenobi's character felt consistent with the films and you could see the inspiration from the comic books as well.
Now after having watched the official "Obi-Wan Kenobi" show on Disney Plus, I cannot help but compare the two projects. This fan film is better than the version Disney gave us. I wish we got this attention to detail in the Disney plus show, instead of some incoherent plot, inconstant character motivations, and events that feel completely disconnected from the source material.
Werewolf by Night (2022)
A Breath of Fresh Air
This short feature was surprisingly good. I don't know a lot about the source material other than he fought Moon Knight in his debut comic. I heard this was being made and then it seemingly dropped from nowhere without warning.
It was a fun little adventure. I liked the stylized black and white aesthetic with minimal use of color reminiscent of Sin City or 300. The color was used smartly and made sense in the context. It was made to look like the old school classic Universal horror pictures.
There was humor, but it was not necessarily campy. There was also a surprising amount of blood that I feel they got away with because it was black and white.
Andor (2022)
Best Star Wars Disney Plus Show (So Far)
This is probably the best Star Wars tv shows so far. I love seeing a different side of the galaxy. It feels like it could be a really good generic Sci Fi, but set in the Star Wars universe.
The characters are all interesting, the dialogue is smart, the acting is phenomenal, and the cinematography is stunning. The story progresses slowly but it's interesting and I am entirely invested.
The best part, in my opinion, is that the story beats are logical and easy to follow without the show holding your hand. There are several examples of "show, don't tell" throughout the series, and it works wonderfully.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Hugely Disappointing
I held off reviewing till the show was over, but man am I disappointed. The CGI environments are beautiful, half of the costumes are decent, and every once in a while there will be a line of dialog that is profoundly Tolkien-esque. Unfortunately, the majority of the dialogue, fight scene choreography, character development, world building, and general cohesive continuity is absolutely terrible. The characters are boring and unlikeable, their motivations are inconsistent and unclear, and the reveals in the last two episodes are unsurprising and uninspired. Even divorced from Tolkien, this series is a complete mess of story telling. It is baffling to me that so much money was spent on this show for this lackluster outcome.
