An error has ocurred. Please try againThese additional films & TV are pretty fabulous. They give slightly less emotional complexity than my 1st list but are top-notch films, that have a strong female narrative and are emotionally engaging. They're miles above most films about women. They are intelligent, glamorous, sexy, and sometimes campy.
For my 10 star list see 'Chick Flicks for Smart Women': http://www.imdb.com/list/ls063090839
These are super lightweight films but still have a female narrative
For deeper content, see list: 1. Chick Flicks for Smart Women 2. Chick Flicks for Smart Women II
These shows play on endless repeat when I need of solace.

Poor Things (2023)
Consent? Fetish soft porn?
A few things made me uncomfortable. All the nudity/sex seemed very voyeuristic and geared to the 'male gaze'. Also, she has the brain of a child, which seems far under the age of consent.
The fact that we are invited to see her having sex was contingent on her being too compromised mentally to prevent it or confront us as an adult. They gave her a strong sexual appetite in lieu of consent; "if she enjoyed it that's ok" = problematic. Also, these sex and nude scenes seemed less about the plot and more about exploiting Emma Stone's body. End credits were filled with dildo's and such.
It was super fetish driven soft porn.
With an all male writing/directing, even the ending seemed a male sexual fantasy of what a 'powerful' woman would be.
The costumes were good. The landscapes is like many dystopian steampunk movies.
Daisy Jones & The Six (2023)
Shallow & Incorrect
This show besmirches the name of the Laurel Canyon music scene. The characters are driven by achieving money and fame not art. They move to Laurel Canyon and don't know anyone in that community. Nore do they play music just for fun, alone or with other bands. The only things authentic about the show are fashion and jargon. It is the shallowest interpretation of this place and time. And the music is so bad! As historic fiction this fails to paint an authentic picture of a very colorful phenomenon.

Huge (2010)
Unrealistic & Body Shaming
I know some large people, they aren't dessert binging, candy hoarding, self hating people. Some suffer injuries, some genetics, some probably gut biome damage. The world judges them harshly. Doctors tell them to "just eat less and exercise more" but that is also a judgement. Average people truly believe over eating high calorie foods is how you get fat. They really believe being fat is a failure of character because that is their self centered experience. The diet industry shoves this belief down everyone's throat because it's profitable. This 'failure of character', is the core of this show. Let's hope that awareness has risen since 2010. There is already enough pressure on young people, why is self hatred held up as a motivating force?
Wow.
Westworld (2016)
Sadistic Snuff Stories Aimed at Women
I was excited to watch this as I love the campy classic it comes from. As I watched I began to feel super uneasy, not because of the suspense but because of the sanctioned violence towards the female "robots". I watched as these female characters were raped, beaten and terrorized. This was a pleasurable outcome for some visitors because the women are just "robots" and we as the audience are invited hate these villains because we know violence is wrong. However, because we know those are the 'bad guys' and the women are really robots, we are given permission now to watch detailed acts of sadism towards the female characters...for our entertainment. That's kinda awful, and definitely very sexist in a very violent way. Another disturbing layer, is that many of the naked bleeding female victims are also whores, woman who are already viewed as subhuman in our culture already.
Some may say that the male robots take a beating as well but the prolonged scenes of horrific sexualized torture is lavished upon the female characters. The female robots receive so much brutality, and they do it naked...slipping in their own blood. There is a scene early on where a naked whore robot requires "maintenance" and has had something cut from her. She wakes mid procedure alone on a gurney a gaping bloody wound above her groin (uterus area), terrified she tries to leave slipping in the blood running down her legs from her womb. It's really quite awful.
After having this quite visceral reaction to something that's supposed to be entertainment, I did some research online. Many people are having this reaction and not surprisingly, many of them are women. What's really creepy, is the volume of people rating it as 10 stars...wow. There are articles online if you wish to find out more.
From SALON "Most disturbing was HBO's president of programming Casey Bloys' cavalier admission to reporters a few months ago that that he doesn't see a difference between rape and murder in his series, viewing both as equally entertaining."
Dickensian (2015)
Twisted
I think of Dickens and think of tales about kindness, survival, good will and hope under duress. This show takes what charm these stories have and infuses them with murder, suspicion, rape (of old ladies and young), prostitution & the killing of beloved pets. It superimposes an awful theme full of fear and treachery over these beloved charming characters. I can see there is a supposed 'happy ending' but it is merely the catching of a murderer. This new simplistic theme creates a shift in vision away from warmth and kindness to one of doubt and fear. For some people this shallow new interpretation may be remembered as the meaning of Dickens works. What a perverse thing to do. Wow.
The Mill (2013)
Absolutely Wonderful Womens History
I think that women may respond to this amazing drama, more than men...more's the pity. It addresses the kind of oppression women, children and the poor have faced throughout time. It takes a moment of one such time and speaks volumes about many others like it. An intimate snapshot into something deeply relatable to many. Even with such a dark topic this story is uplifting, because it is true to human nature. The acting is superb, the writing intelligent and the cinematography gorgeous. It was altogether deeply satisfying.
Personally I find it intriguing that most women's history, if not contained within the political arena is considered historical fiction. I suppose this series is a work of fiction but it is based on the true experiences of the voiceless, nameless, brave people who suffered through such hard times. More a fictionalized truth, truer than what may lay in the pages of history books. The people who write history are the victors, the politicians, the wealthy. Mostly if not always educated men. This bias is so deep that few lasting memoirs exist about the lives of common people. And yet most of us are still common, and more then half are women.
I have sat through countless media and fiction that centers around the male experience. I find it elating that many new series are giving equal time to the plot development of the lives of women, and women not as victims of violence but of circumstance.
I think this story rocks. It is definitely a 10 star series.
