The Family (2019)

A good documentary about a corrupt religious organization
12 August 2019
While it's not amazing and likely the information in it has also been presented in the books it's based on and other media, it's all news to me. It's very clear that the people giving low votes are not rating the series but anyone who dares criticize their religion but this is not an anti-Christian doc, it's expose of a corrupt and hateful organization that does not need anyone's defense, least of all from so-called religious people

Schitt's Creek (2015–2020)

Very funny show

I don't write a lot of reviews but since there are so many bad reviews of this show I have to really wonder why. I don't want to give it a ten because it's not the sort of show that I would watch again and again (very few comedies are) but I did binge watch three of the seasons in one week.

I will say that I didn't like this show the first time I tried to watch it; it seemed goofy and the characters were a little too outlandish-same experience I had with shows like Kimmy Schmidt, Arrested Development, etc.-but over time the characters are fleshed out and you start to connect with them on a deeper level. It's a show that has heart and even if you find the characters annoying initially, the themes are pretty relatable and the way it takes on parent/sibling conflicts, romantic relationships, and just growing up in general is really fresh and done in a way that makes you reconsider your first impressions of the Roses.

If you prefer one dimensional characters with no redeemable attributes, this might not be your show. I personally really appreciate the fact that they've taken unloveable people and made them human when it would have been so much easier to cash in on millennial bashing or stereotyping. I really have to wonder what prompted so many one star reviews: is it because the characters are annoying or is it because the show makes you care about and even root for characters that you would prefer to only have negative feelings for?

Dear White People (2017–2021)
10/10
Very good show that's not in any way preachy

Just adding a review to balance out the garbage ones from fragile people who can't handle the topics discussed in this show. It's entertaining, engaging, and absolutely does not go over top or engage in "racism against whites" (lol what a concept). If you're white and not constantly crying about it you will like this show just as I have. It's not a 10/10 show (7.5/10 is closer) but don't listen to the trolls rating this 1 star

The Aliens (2016)
8/10
Interesting premise with consistently strong episodes

I don't usually write reviews but I felt I had to as this show is incredibly underrated here for completely irrelevant and silly reasons. Someone said it was created by the same people as Misfits? Irrelevant. The apartheid theme is too liberal for your political persuasion? Irrelevant. Too "urban" (seriously, what?) for you? Irrelevant. Not as good as a completely unrelated sci-fi movie with one similar plot point? Also irrelevant.

The story lines are compelling, the acting is very good, and the plot is very believable. I have never seen so many ridiculous complaints about a show (and no, I am not a "fanboi").

Science fiction isn't just about superheroes and superpowers, at it's core the genre is meant to portray difficult topics (like the immigration/migrant/refugee debate for instance here) in an atypical way that makes you think about them conceptually rather than exactly as they are. Does this show achieve that? Yes, absolutely. We can quibble about whether it does it effectively or not (I think it does) but it seems like some people reviewing this show can't wrap their heads around the fact that that's what sci-fi is often meant to do. It balances that with some humor and cringe comedy, which works here, nothing truly hilarious but decent enough.

All in all, it's a decent show with good writing, good acting that shows a lot of promise. It's mind boggling why it would deserve a 5.7 rating (not least of all because it's only 3 episodes in so far!).
